IIT prof's advice on how to bounce back from a bad exam

Exams don't always go well. This is particularly problematic in the semester system with its very short duration in which after a bad exam, students despondent because there is so little time to bounce back.
In this video I share some tips for bouncing back targetting all kinds of students: the top performers, the mid-level, and also those students who are at the border of pass and fail.
There is no magic bullet. Rather I share some common sense tips which students already know about. The video is intended to provide a nudge in the right direction to help them realize the need to honestly assess their situation and take corrective measures.

"By not attending classes you are paying for their better education" - You were bang on with this statement. The points you made today are not just solution for a bad exam but also habits to inculcate which will help everybody for the rest of their lives. For eg. If students develop the habit of studying last moment just before exam, then when they go to work this habit will persist and they will work on their tasks just before deadline and it will end up being a half-baked job with not so good results. A very good video and students will benefit to hear your approach for a bad exam but also take these as life lessons and make them a habit.

Preparation for good CG(>9.5) begins in the break before the semester begins. For subjects which have problem solving, a semester system always proves to be too short and fast paced to practice. I didn't do well in my FY programming course despite studying a lot for it was because I had zero exposure to programming in 12th grade while most students had done python in their +1 and +2 and were able to grasp the concepts faster. So for courses like these, it is best to prepare them in the vacations(of course, only if your goal is to excel). In the beginning when the course is slow and profs are just introducing the terminology, one can practice and get far ahead of the class and be prepared when inevitably the course starts rushing. Bad exams due to lack of effort are always unacceptable. P.S: Just my suggestions

do you think its possible to 'save' a course during the midsem break? so that one may get a 9 or 10 grade in the course in which one has struggled so far.

@@SV-yo6nq One has to be realistic. A 9 or a 10 may not be possible if the Mid-Sem did not go well at all. But with a well-directed effort, an 8 is possible.

Thank you for the advice, and as rightly pointed out my Dynamics and Discrete Structure papers went a bit bad, and now that I introspect the reason is exactly what was pointed out in the video, i.e., less practice. Especially the dynamics questions appear like the typical JEE mechanics questions, and since those were my strong points, I felt I need not work hard on Dynamics, which apparently was a big mistake. I will strive to implement this advice for end sems.

The same thing happens every year for Dynamics with the best of students! Since you have realised your mistake, I think you will be in a better position to work towards End-Sem.

Sir, you are right. I attend classes almost everyday and just before exams, I get friends suddenly whom I don't even know properly and then they ask for notes. I am not able to ignore people easily and end up helping them wasting my time.

Sir I can't thank u more... After my jee advanced exam and was a dropper too I lost my whole confidence. It was a bad day for me and I was consistently score a good marks that was required . But The Day just defeated me badly and now my family thinks that I can't give any competitive exam anymore, I can't beer the pressure. I'm really demotivated harder than ever besides my college started 1 months ago. I'm currently pursuing Bachelor in Sciences at IISER Bhopal, still whenever I listen IIT, the picture that comes to my mind is 4th of June. I think I was a deserving student for IIT but pressure handling just smashed me. I gave alot of mocks still I fu*ked up.

I really liked reading newspapers in my +2 days. After my first unsuccessful attempt at IIT JEE, every time I would open the newspaper and come across any mention of "IIT" anywhere, it would tear me up from within. So, I know the feeling. But, you got into BS at IISER Bhopal ... and for science, IISERs are really very good!

2.5 months after the above post I am writing to inform you that I have successfully completed my 1st semester and got 8+ CGPA out of 10 which we can consider average hope I can perform well in my next semester and get my desired results. - minimise damage - introspect why the exam went bad? - develop a high level, on the spot problem solving ability - develop the ability to perform well under pressure (you have to perform when you sit for the exam) - do enough problem solving means solve more challenging questions (challenging practice) - don't focus entire energy on just 1 subject, there are multiple subjects so allocate time to each proportionate to the requirement, the other subjects should not suffer - be 100% physically and mentally present during the lectures, don't watch a lecture for the sake of it - then afterwards, revise and solve problems relevant to the lecture/ topic

Think after exam, what was lacking, more time investment, or other things, think about it Solve more challenging problem for practice Equal time to all subjects (can change lil acc to circumstances) Attend classes! (Stay mentally present too and engage with the prof) Can get implicit hints during the lec and maybe in after lec doubt session woth prof One ques sir, During the lec, ehat should be our approach, to make notes or to just listen attentively and make notes using the slides later in hostel room ?

All of which you mentioned are equally good, IISc is a bit better than the rest. At the end of the day, everything depends on your own efforts to excel.

IITS and IISERs have good experimental physics research but barely any theoretical physics research. Only IISc is good for such endeavours.

Credentials are important in life for people to take you seriously. No one gives attention to people with lowly credentials thus everyone works hard for the same. Most aerospace departments usually have the following divisions - aerodynamics, propulsion, control & structures. With your background in civil you will have limited exposure to most of these subjects, except for aerospace structures (most of the theory components are quite well studied in civil structures also like solid mechanics and structural dynamics). So, if that is your interest you can definitely pursue MTech in aerospace after Btech civil.
