I am a Westerner and compared to my friends and colleagues am pretty good at math but I am *amazed* by the speed that these people - even the guy who said was bad at math - solved those calculations. Yes they were not extremely hard and I would be able to do them by just calculating with my mind but I would need way more time, at least a couple minutes.

People here in india memorise all the squares and root till at least 20. My 10 years old nephew can tell squares upto 20. Now that I don't use squares and all in daily life I sometimes forget a a little. But high schoolers are most often thorough with it.

It's pretty easy tbh 18 comes in between 10 and 20 . It's closest to 20 with a difference of 2. Subtract 2 from 18 and multiply it by 20. Add the square of the difference. That'll be 4 . You'll get 324. THAT'S IT. That's how they teach us here in India.

Sometimes they memorize the squares and there are also some shortcut methods. They make us learn countless of these shortcuts to crack questions in entrance exams and aptitude tests that you need to clear before getting hired.

Indian student here and I agree with you! You should check out our JEE advance paper, we're supposed to write that exam after high school. They're fun. And this is definitely not math but it boosts your productivity when you can calculate the square of 85 in seconds, orally.

they use calculators. See it's hard when you're studying for engineering and the equations get long. and complex. You could do that without a calculator but it'll consume a lot of time and time is what they don't have here in Kota. So calculators are must here now. You're not learning to divide or multiply anymore, so what's the point of not using calculators?

I was born in india and i studied there till year 10 then i moved to Nz with my parents . I started studying here from year 11 in high school and trust me the math we had in year 11 was the math i did in primary school back in india so it was a piece of cake for me :)

As an Indian kid, I would say we are in fact good at math. Most of us love math, but some obviously hate it. When Indians, even those who hate math, go to a different country they realize that they're much better at math than they thought. I've seen this happen many times in my life. Also the reason we're able to answer these exponent questions so easily and quickly is because most of them we've seen several times in textbooks and have memorized. For example, I'm just 11 but I was able to answer all of these questions in a matter of seconds.
