What we don’t often hear about in the mainstream media is the growing wealth gaps that are destroying the middle class all around the world. This is especially true for India, which has the third largest number of billionaires in the world after the US and China. But did you know that the richest 1% of Indians own over 40% of the country’s total wealth? How do ordinary Indians feel about this wealth gap and their top 1%? Our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Delhi to get some local insight.

I'm British Indian and im in croatia, my tour guide was talking to me about how all the Indians he's met here are so rich and he was saying how the western media only shows one side and that is the poor. But I said there is also a massive wealth gap. I think you would always find that in countries with massive populations.

Rich to a European doesn't mean Rich in Indian context, Europeans when traveling around and see people who are poor living in 120 square meters flat while they themselves live in 35 square meters flat if lucky, they consider that being rich, to you, to Indians, Being rich is to have more than others, a stomach which will never be full!!

Indians traveling to Croatia for vacation are of course the wealthy ones...the gap between rich and poor in developing countries are huge. 10million USD will make you a rich person in Europe whereas this will be considered 'cute' among the rich community in developing countries. The tour guide is obviously short-sighted thinking that those visiting Croatia represents entire Indian people.

Just like you can't compare india with other country because of cost of living. You can't compare every indian, region to region cost of living varies significantly. Both Mumbai and Kolkata are considered metropolitan cities but have vary drastic difference in their cost of living.

My mom used to teach in primary school. Her salary was just 5K INR a month(1-2 years ago). While school earned in Lakhs they paid their teachers so little. Edit: That's not it. apparently they used to wire more money in teachers accounts and later ask them to withdraw some % money & teachers had to give it back in cash. It's not just one or two schools. A whole bunch of them do that.

No offense but most of the Americans are lucky because the $ is the reserve currency and you guys have H1b visa . As you can print money whenever you are in crisis so it becomes a secure trade for different countries but if dedollarisation happens then this would be horrific for US citizens . A girl using OnlyFans in USA earns more than the highest paying software engineering job in India, so this explains a lot. If it was the other way around then you know the answer.

In 2019 USA's 79% wealth holds by top 3 percent. USA has lots of opportunities but cities like new york and Detroit, schools and being black are life threatening. If you want to study, take loan and work 10 hours a day. Village or small towns have less opportunities to grow or come out of loop. And don't want to talk about los angeles:/

I think it is also important to distinguish where these people are being interviewed, in a metropolitan area. As we all know there are vast vast disparities in the welfare of the people in say cities versus those stuck working in rural areas through farms/factories.

100%. I'm living here in rural Tamil Nadu, myself having no income for the past year surviving on random donations, and the hourly rate of our fellow brothers and sisters in the villages are so low. Though yes, they manage to survive in their own way, it is unfortunate, from experience and observation, that we cannot thrive in our true selves constantly trying to gather the basic materials. The taxation regime in India is meant to help the rich. The highest tax slab is 30% for somebody earning over 15 Lakh & 30 Lakh. 30% slab is bigger burden on the 15 Lakh guy than the 30 Lakh. Also health insurance in India is private & is also taxed at 18 %. The terrible taxation regime & low social welfare investment are the largest contributors to inequality in India.

Being from a lower middle class tribal family, I think the only way to get to the top is through govt services with the privilege of reservation. Other than that, it's really tough. In words people say you can do whatever you want but it's not always possible in reality. A good and strong foundation is required to become a successful businessman. The doctor and the guy with glasses both pointed out how casteism affects the reserved and non reserved people. I believe that they were both right in their own opinion. There's sure a lot of poor and low caste people who still dont even have the opportunity to get education and this mostly happens in villages. At the same time there's reserved people who exploit this privilege to such heights that they accumulate a lot of generational wealth and can provide their kids with a lot of opportunities and misuse the reservation given to them.

Most Indians I've met can easily converse in atleast two languages. Most middle-class and above families choose to send their kids to English medium schools, so a significant portion of our population has had education in English. Fun fact, we had a house helper who didn't have any formal education (she didn't even know the Earth spun on its own axis and around the sun) who could fluently converse in 7 languages: Santali(her tribal language), Bengali, Hindi, English(she was catholic), Nepali, Bhojpuri & Assamese. She is truly a genius.

We are already facing the brunt of unwelcomed tourism, illegal trade of land and destruction of our extremely sensitive ecosystem as a result. It’s also important to point out india is a very affordable in terms of living standards for all income ranges. It ranks 3rd in terms of PPP. So a salary of 40,000-50,000 INR a month will be a good enough salary for a family of 4 to get by. You can survive on ₹100-200 a day if you are from the lowest strata. Unfortunately if the wealth distribution was better we could afford far more to improve our living conditions like the developed countries uniformly.

Many high skilled workers move to US, UK , Canada etc where they were getting good opportunities . I think there is a huge divide between the rich and the poor in India that people rarely address. And I have faced it in real life because I am a kid from a middle class family living in South Delhi. I think most them are missing a very important point. Its very very difficult for a poor person to go up the ladder. Its easier for a middle class guy because they have those basic tools like education and exposure. But if a guy has never been to be proper school, its very difficult for him to break that cycle.

The per capita income in big cities is 10x more than the national average and still it's just enough to pay for the basic needs like house, electricity, education, food etc. The reason a lot of Indians these days decide to migrate is not because they don't have food to eat, or they can't survive in India and migrate as a last ditch effort, they do that to earn enough money to enjoy life as well , the salaried class that is.

u should have asked them whether their parents were wealthy as well. Most of the rich people I know have acquired their riches in last 1-2 generations. so, the rich/middle class families are expanding in India. Sure, the income disparity is increasing but if a decade back two families were earning 10k and 20k per month and now they are earning 20k and 50k pm(without inflation) it's improvement for both families. This is something people often miss when talking about a poor country turning into a middle-income country. Also there's a big difference between wealth and income. Rich people often tend to be better at finance and savings(This is the reason they are rich in the first place).

My household monthly income was around 5k during my engineering and a 50k per month salary (although not as high) felt like a dream to me at that time. Now I'm earning upwards of 50k but it still doesn't seem enough. We really need to maintain a minimalist lifestyle even if our income grows exponentially. Otherwise your spending will just increase linearly with your income. And that's not good. Learnt it the hard way.

I live in the tier 3 village in India 😂 So i guess I have better understanding of what's going on in the villages First of all I agree with the people in the video they can't be more true And talking about the village life and all.. let me tell you guys, people are happy... They earn enough money to be called happy Everyone has a smart phone i mean almost 2 smart phones per family and yes every member of a family has phone but not the smart phone.. I wanted to make lots of points but the one thing I want to highlight that the gap between rich and others may be increasing but the gap between middle class and poor(lower middle class) is decreasing or actually already almost zero now And talking about Can the less privileged become reach? My answer is a big no The boy in the video also mentioned that those who are doing these start ups things were upper middle class eg. Ashnir Grower and other Sharks too which we saw on the show But the people in the village have every facilities possible like internet, Amazon and Flipkart delivery to doorstep, 24*7 electricity and everything except the Domino's Pizza 🍕😋 and burgers 🍔 which actually are not famous in villages and also people can't afford it, they are really expensive fast food instead panipuri, kachori, samosa and vadapaav rocks 😊

This is a interesting perspective, everyone discusses inequality between the mega rich and everyone else but in India as you said the gap between the poor and middle class has been greatly reduced. This is a huge improvement. You see it in big cities where there are barely any beggars now compared to just ten years ago.

There is a big difference here in wealth in terms of assets.. there is a huge gap in that but in terms of what they earn and being satisfied, I think most of them are satisfied.. everyone can survive in india .. no one has to sleep empty stomach as large no. Of temples and gurudwaras provide free food ... There is a culture of donating food and cloths too .. if u wanna buy big house and big car than that's a problem ..

Middle class people hardly pay income tax in India. What are you talking about. Below 7.24 lakhs in income, you pay ZERO income tax. Find me another country with similar income levels to India where such a large tax break is given.

Of course the eye surgeon thinks it’s all hard work and dedication. 🙄 His generation struggles to see how much opportunities they had back then, with less people competing for more resources or how just having a bachelor’s degree you could get an academic tenure or a good paying job, whilst now you have to become a doctor and at the end Academia won’t pay you well enough. 😢 It’s sad. So 45% of seats are reserved for 70% of India and rest 55% of seats are mostly won by 30% of population. To add insult to injury, 98% of faculty in IITs is from upper caste. The problem with India isn't reservation, it is just a method used by politicians to turn us against each other. The real problem with India is under development. But who wants to talk about that when you can just put all your hate towards weaker people than you. Think logically and the world will become clear to you.

I think it is a common phenomenon in regions with big population, and there can't be any direct solution to it, you can't just simply hate the billionaires and expect the things to work out for you, they are there because they have made it and can be even seen as an inspiration, what else that can be done is improving the education system of the country and giving exposure of the present technologies and skills to all the young people so that they can find a path for themselves

From my experience, the average salary right now to this day is around 18-22k. Some states have so so horrible pay rate. They want people with high experience and qualifications for 10-12k per month. Pathetic
