Manufacturers should just put the loft number rather than the club number since the club numbers are kind of meaningless now. Imagine the days when you'd swing after your playing partners, and you'd ask "what iron did you hit?" That question would be irrelevant now. How about reviewing the Cobra King CB/MB irons in the future?

I'm 67 years old (play to a 5 handicap, was as low as a 2 last year) and I play the Callaway Rogue X irons, which are strong lofted. My 7 iron is lofted at 27*. I LOVE these irons. They are long, they are forgiving, yet, I can work the ball left to right or right to left as needed. These irons also deliver plenty of height so I have no trouble stopping these clubs on the green. My average total distance with the 7-iron is 175 yards, which is a full 15-20 yards longer than the previous irons I had (Callaway X20's). I also play the Callaway Rogue X hybrids (6, 5, 4 & 3).

These irons aren't for someone with Rick's swing. These are going to be an option for a slower swing speed player, who is often out to in swing path with an open face, fairly sweepy, and generates a few more degrees of delivered loft. Most average golfers don't realize delivered loft is the key metric, not the stated loft on the head. And delivered loft can easily change 5-6 degrees between different players. Rick tends to be on the low-side of delivered loft, since he pushes his hands forward, has a in to out path, and always gets a bit flippy with his hands and turns the head over. As Rick says at the very end, this is for the high, right, and flaired up players, which is a big % of the market.

Number on the bottom of the club is meaningless. If the clubs work for you and you know your distances play what works for your game.

I dare a club manufacturer to put A, B, C, D...on the bottom of the clubs just to call out the ridiculousness. I think it's about time to just put the lofts on the bottom ala wedges..

Just bought a set of the older version of these, and I bought 5i-GW instead of 4i-PW to compensate for the strong lofts. When you ignore the number on the bottom - you just hit a club/loft for a distance. My old 8i is my new 9i... etc. I really like my gapping when I utilize the GW instead of the 4i.

@jethro2309

I think the point that is being missed about stronger lofts is that instead of taking a 7iron from your normal range, you can take a 9 iron instead, which should theoretically be easier to hit due to shaft length. The number on the club is irrelevant. Just add more wedges to fill the gap at the higher end.

I carry my 7i. 165. The fitting was the most important. My shaft choice Elevate MPH shaft gives me more height with out sacrificing spin

The biggest issue with these sets is not that the lofts are jacked way up, it's that they give you the wrong set of clubs. Most stores sell the set from 5-PW, but if you buy that set you get issues with gapping in both ends of the bag. You end up with a 5 iron that goes about as far as your 4hybrid or 7wood, and you very quickly end up with a 20-30 yard gap between your PW and GW. Most people getting these irons would probably be better off with getting them from 6i to AW with the lofts they are at, but every online store in my area only sells these clubs from 5i-PW.
@Buckseyy
@Buckseyy 46 минут бұрын
Great post. They should almost be a 6i-SW. PW=44 AW=50 SW =56. If someone wants to switch out of the 56 to a more traditional SW that would be okay, but they would then lose some of the forgiveability that this set is aiming towards. Could option a 5-iron and 4-iron but traditionally most would transition into more hybrids at that point.

@mikecowell8327
@mikecowell8327 5 сағат бұрын
The lofts on the X are very strong thats true. But Rick why are you comparing the spin numbers on a Cobra X 7 Iron to another sets 7 iron?? you won't be hitting the same shot with both clubs. Compare the spin numbers to the club you hit a similiar distance. So if you hit the X 189 compare the spin numbers to the club you hit 189. That is a more valid comparison. Since those are the clubs that would go head to head. Also keep in mind, that 7 iron may be lofted like a 5 but it is still on a 7 iron shaft, which is easier to swing. One of the problems with "long irons" is they are longer shafted, making the swing more difficult. I have the Cobras. I probably gained 10 yards of distance up and down the bag, but I didn't lose accuracy. I think this is because the club shaft didn't get longer. I did change balls to one that gives me more spin because I did feel like I lost some of that in the exchange. Overall I've dropped from a 15 to a 10.5 this year. And while I can't say dedfinitively its all the clubs, I will say when I'm standing at 165yds and hitting an 8 iron, I feel alot more confident than I did previously pulling out a 6 iron. And anyone who plays knows confidence matters.

I own the previous generation of these in the Forged Tec X. I don't really care which number is on the bottom of the club. I have 5i-GW which if you think about it is comparable to most 4i-PW sets loft wise. They're great clubs, forgiving, long and feel really good.

Rick, big fan of the review videos. I have a request, can you make a video comparing matte golf balls vs normal balls. Currently, I play prov1s and volvik vivid… my scores are dramatically lower with the volvik balls. Ball flights are higher and 100% straighter with the long clubs using the volvik. Is this a thing or just my dumbass golf game???

Yeah my buddy has Wilson irons that are about 5 degrees stronger that my old TaylorMade R9 TP irons ( 34• for a 7 irons). He hits them about 15 yards further than mine, but I don't care: I know my distances, and I weighted them progressively from heel to toe throughout the bag, with 1gr lead tape to get perfectly straight ball flight. I have them 15 years now, they're just part of me, extensies of my arms.

I really struggled with the previous generation forged Tec x. Possibly the lowest launching lowest spinning iron I’ve ever hit. This iron is made for one of two players. Player one is someone who delivers a massive amount of excess loft and spin at impact and most likely has average swing speed. Player 2 is someone who has very high swing speed and is able to actually generate enough spin for the ball to climb despite its low loft. Not sure what cobra are doing here. Seems like this is a small segment of players, maybe I’m wrong
@bwalsh1105
@bwalsh1105 4 сағат бұрын
It doesn't matter that they're getting stronger. it makes no difference. You just use loft-based distance until you fine tune the iron number to that distance so if a 7 iron is as strong as your old 5 you hit 7 iron instead of a 5 iron. And if it leads to more confidence by using a higher lofted club, than that's a bonus. Additionally, I believe this is really just what Bryson was onto years ago with single length irons. if I'm playing a strong lofted 7 iron at standard length, I will have more control over the ball. you just have to separate loft from traditional iron numbers. I can see in the not-too-distant future, irons no longer having numbers and be able to be more customizable and just by loft.
@DefenderTIM

@Buckseyy
@Buckseyy 50 минут бұрын
It's been commented on prior, but there is a purpose for the forgiveness of these clubs. If someone has high swing speed but cannot hit a more blade-style iron as consistently, maybe they use these clubs. If they are 160 yards out, instead of using an 8-iron like many, they can use a PW or 9-iron. The spin numbers aren't perfect, but sometimes that isn't as important as a consistent strike. I think Rick isn't looking at the shots correctly here. He is focused on how low a 7-iron is and the distance. I think he needs to look at comparing these clubs to what he normally would hit from 190-200 out. Are the spin numbers on a Tec 7-iron comparable to his 5 or 4-iron in his regular set?? If so, maybe they are actually set up really well for some people. I think others are making a great point that companies should focus on putting a loft number on the bottom of the club instead of a number. It would help keep different sets more comparable. If companies are really trying to keep the designs minimalistic, they could put a smaller loft stamp on the back of the clubs. Would still allow for a clean sleek look.
@starwf07

The Tec-X set needs a 10 iron... I will say, though, that while I'm not a strong-loft-hater (I understand and appreciate the physics and club design around launch), I do wonder where there's a tipping point where it starts hurting higher handicaps. I have a set of Ping i e1 irons, which are not even that strong by these standards (32* 7 iron), but visually when you put a strong 7 iron down by the ball and see no/low loft on the club, it can also be a bit intimidating. It looks like you've got a 4 iron next to the ball and that despite your logical self's knowledge about the inner weighting of the club, nothing's going to get it in the air. At a certain point, I worry that could cause some people to flip the club at the ball to try and subconsciously add loft to get the ball in the air.

Imho, we must understand that there is no "7 iron". There are only irons with a certain loft where the manufacturer put an arbitrary number on it. Maybe we should go the route that has been done with the wedges and drop the "names" alltogether. Just print the loft on it. "What we hit here? I think the 32°"....

The loft jacking keeps getting worse. Don't forget that the lengths are getting stretched too. There should be a market for high forgiveness clubs with traditional lofts and lengths yet I don't see anyone offering that. Wasn't the old driving iron (1 iron) 39 inches long and 16 or 17 degrees of loft? I want to come in steeper to the target instead of using one of my six "wedges" to go farther than my playing partners. If I need more distance I can just club up.

Lofts are killing the game. Golf is huge, but manufacturers are making low handicappers feel like they're pros, so they sell clubs. When I first played golf, I hit a 7 iron 140-150. A 7 iron now hits 170-180. You're hitting a 6-5 iron, more 5 iron. Golf manufacturers need to sell clubs. You're buying the same clubs, year in-year out with way bigger lofts.

This is why Fred Couples has a 6hybrid. His new 6i is 23* 🏌🏽‍♂️ In 1993 my Staff 7i was 38 and my 4i was 26*

I can't see how a 15-ish handicapper could even get those airborne. They would seem to make the game even harder for less-capable players. Seems upside down??

I have wondered the same thing. People have replaced long irons with hybrids. Now a 7 iron is the same loft as a long iron.

Definitely think the strong lofts some brands are bringing out is to cater for the ego golfer who wants to say they're hitting a 7 iron for a 180-190 yard par 3. For me one of the most important things for my clubs is the gapping and god knows how you gap when you're 7 iron is 27 degrees 😂😂

Personally, I have the PXG Gen 6 irons. They have a 30* 7 iron in the P model which is what I have, and it’s not uncommon for me to hit it off the tee on par 3’s 170+. Ego wise, it’s cool being father than my teammates but I’ve noticed it helps wayyy more with proximity to the hole from farther out. I feel way more confident with a 7 from that distance than another sets 5.

Loft is and always has been loft. 8. 7. 4 . 9 are just arbitrary labels. Same mindstuck paralysis happens with this and with PAR. each is irrelevant to what we are trying to accomplish

Reading lots of good comments on here tonight, but the reality is that Mr Muira makes great golf clubs and he thinks a 7 iron should be 34 degrees and a 5 iron 27 degrees. So lots of people today think their clubs are great because they are long when in reality their 7 iron is really a 5 iron. I will just carry on using my analogue Muira lofts and brag that my 7 iron will go higher than yours

If they were, then they’d also be strong on the MB’s. They’re not. Dynamic Loft is what matters. There’s certainly a portion of it that is marketing. But to say it’s all marketing is just as false. It’s a matter of fitting. Ultimately, what label is on the bottom of the club doesn’t matter. You can call them Fred and Jenny as long as you can tell one from the other in the set.

what pisses me off is that someone buying a set of these is probably only going to be able to hit 5 of the clubs... that averages out to 260 per iron. This isn't a set that is targeted at people likely to get fit.

Do you really think a stronger lofted club is gonna make a high handicap player hit it longer…I don’t see it I think it would be a bit harder to hit the sweet spot…and now what you’ll have to carry at least one extra wedge and maybe two for your shorter shots…

The loft is irrelevant when combined with weighting. Lofts were made traditionally to get the ball in the air for particular irons. Decreasing loft on old irons would prevent us from getting required height. So we should stop complaining about loft being "too strong". It is like complaining that our steering wheels are too small. The old steering wheels were almost twice as big. It was needed in the past to generate enough torque to turn the wheels before power steering. A modern 7 iron is not the same as an old 5 iron. The loft is irrelevant.

I honestly don't get the thinking behind strong lofted clubs other than bragging rights to say you hit your wedge 130-140 yards.

Imagine making a 16 minute review of a club and barely mentioning feel, sound, dispersion, spin, launch angle, peak height etc. All I learnt from this is that they're strong lofted and look like a P790

I don’t get why people are so upset about other people’s club lofts… if someone says they hit a 7 iron but it has the loft of a 5 iron… why do you care? I feel like everyone worries too much about what everyone else is playing instead of focusing whats good for their own games

Since I game cobra one length irons, the number on the bottom is even more meaningless. The 36 degree club feel like and perform like a traditional 7 iron. But the number on the bottom is 9.

No lofts are not getting to "strong". Nothing to do with the lofts, it's the fact that companies are changing what number goes with the loft. This idea of making people feel better by having stronger lofts is ridiculous.

Let review how this is going to play for the average golfer, when golf is F'ing expensive. These are 1,300, and the person buying this is getting 5 usable lofts at $260 per iron...BS. They then need 4 wedges at ~200, driver @ 550+, two woods for another 900, a hybrid for 300, and a putter for 300. The set now is costing the average player (who these are for) about 4,500 including tax in the US.

Not sure why Cobra needed to add "Hotface" on the face of the club....the moment that club is at address that wording is going to draw your eye especially the target player for these clubs. Cobra just has this weird obsession with adding weird cosmetic things to their clubs that isnt needed.

I don't understand why people get wrapped up in these topics. They're just numbers, who cares. Does it really matter if I call my 30-degree iron a 7, a 6, or any other name I want? Are people's ego's really that fragile?! Really, it's nobody's concern but your own. Does it work for you? That's the only thing that matters.
