The reactions you see are proportional to how charged the batteries were when they encountered the thermal event. If the battery is nearly dead there will be very little reaction. However, if you do this with fully charged batteries you will get the most reaction. Edit: Also, to extinguish a battery fire, a fire extinguisher is nearly useless. If you want to put it out, pour sand or dirt on it to extinguish. When we do repairs on devices with batteries like those, we have buckets of sand in case of any thermal events. Water does not put out chemical fires.

@@Linus-nq2op - it's not the lithium that is burning. It's a very mild lithium salt solution. The liquid and insulating layers are what is burning, however that's only the reaction of those materials to the intense heat. The heat is simply the uncontrolled discharge of an absolute shitload of energy. So it's more like an electrical fire (welding) than a chemical fire.

Water will help remove heat from the batteries and stop the remaining unexploded cells from exploding, problem is you need a lot of water to do this. As seen when they poured water on it the explosions stop for a short time but then it heats up again because there is just too much heat remaining and then more batteries explode

Doing crazy backyard experiments with friends and building contraptions. 2. Pripyat trips were awesome when you were sneaking around and showing the people of Chernobyl and fixing up Pripyat city like the apartment you painted. Now it feels like you are trying to combine the backyard experiments with the adventures to Chernobyl. I would suggest going back to separating the two again. Even without Anton I will watch like I did before he was onscreen. No neck makes things uncomfortable with his actions and I question his mental capabilities.

This is a great video to show that you can't just put out a lithium battery fire. It looked like they were using a Class D extinguisher, but you need more than just the one, and you need to know how to properly use it. You can't use water to put out a lithium fire, it will only cool it temporarily. It needs to be smothered. I've heard that some jurisdictions in the US will call in a dump truck of fill dirt in a Tesla fire since the car is a loss anyway.

You can't put out an electric fire with any kind of extinguisher! The fire is a manifestation of the energy being released from inside the battery. The only way to put out a battery fire short of waiting for it to burn itself down is water immersion to take the remaining "good" cells below thermal runaway temperature. Current battery tech generates its own oxygen when its electrolyte decomposes and cannot be put out any other way. If any surviving cells got damaged, they may enter thermal runaway at any time. A damaged battery pack cannot be considered safe until it is either destroyed or dunked into a salt brine to fully discharge whatever may be left.

Won't work. Nothing works other than totally submerging it in water and waiting for the reaction to run its course. This is because the chemicals create a fire that has it's own oxygen.

Part of the problem is that Lithium reacts to water and liquids so even if you get it soaked it will keep burning. Getting it cooled off is the best thing you can do.

Totally irrelevant since there isn't ANY lithium metal in these batteries. None.
@johncoops6897

@Neb6 - The danger of these batteries is the "energy density" - in other words, the massive amount of power that they can store. If these is a fault, a huge electrical current flows through the battery and that causes heating and sometimes fire. It's not a lithium fire... it's an electrical fire. Until the energy is depleted, the electrical arcing will continue. Since the batteries are made up of numerous small cells, a fault in one cell can cause overheating and failure of adjacent cells. Once it starts, a chain reaction can occur. It is possible to weld under water with similar amounts of current as can be stored in one or two "power-type" 18650 battery cells. People make spot welders with the pouch cells used in RC hobby vehicles. A dead-flat lithium battery won't burn for very long, if you can get it alight.
@Patrick-857
@Patrick-857 10 ай бұрын
This is incorrect as there is no elemental lithium, plus lithium doesn't actually make up much of the battery. The issue is a massive amount of stored chemical energy. The fire is a runaway chemical reaction that doesn't need air to keep going. Water works, but you need insane amounts, preferably fully submerging it. Even then, it doesn't stop the reaction, of slows it down and takes the heat out of it. Even more effective is extremely cold brine. Brine can stay liquid at around - 20C and it also helps discharge the battery. It's been demonstrated to be more effective with EV fires.

The best fire extinguisher is none. There isn't a fire exstinguisher to put these fires out. You can just try and stop it spreading by cooling with water.
@silvanotonini9151

The reason you can't put the fire out is because a fire is the stored up energy in the battery until that energy is exhausted it won't stop burning.

A chemical extinguisher is pointless, since it's not a chemical reaction. The heat is caused by an electrical short circuit, kind of like an arc welder or plasma cutter. Lithium has nothing to do with it - the fire is here is simply the materials of the battery getting hot and melting then catching alight.

The best thing to do with a lithium battery fire is put a heavy cloth of some sort and cover it over it not letting air into it, and leave it covered for 24 hours .. this is how the fire services around the world are now tackling all these electric car fires.. you can look it up if u don't trust me but I'm telling you guys something that's 100% new technology the fire services are using.bcoz these kind of batteries are hard to extinguish... If an electric car battery starts burning (happens more often than you might think) the fire brigade usually just let it burn out. Water will not extinguish a lithium fire but if you pour *lots* of water on it, it will at least dissipate some heat.
@becconvideo
@becconvideo 2 жыл бұрын
The fire brigade here in super woke country had to procure special water tanks to store burning electric cars in when they have caught fire. It is a matter of time when the omnipresent arsonists here catch a Tesla - or the car next to it close enough to spread the fire. If this happens in an underground car park the building above might suffer structural damage.
