Are micro ferro rods worth packing as a last-ditch effort to creat fire? Many people love micro rods and have a place for them in their set-ups, but for other folks, micro rods aren’t worth the hassle and would rather just carry a larger rod with a longer striking surface. I happen to be one of the latter.
Pretending that I carried nothing more than a ferro rod to light a fire, if I were to carry such a small ferro rod, I’d also ensure to have with me some effective tinder sources for catching such minimal spark output. And if I were to carry prepared tinders with me (which I do and always recommend), then I’d much rather just carry an additional, larger rod in my pocket as a back-up if I happened to be so careless as to lose my primary ferro rod.
Personally, I don’t see any reason to rely on such a small rod carried on a necklace, a survival bracelet, or boot laces and to plan for such as a last-ditch effort when there are more effective last-ditch effort tools far more effective than a micro rod. That said, are there realistic scenarios that exist outside of one’s imagination when carrying a micro rod would be a great idea?
What are your thoughts? Do you believe micro rods serve a purpose, or do you find them less of a valuable survival resource than other items? Feel free to add your comments regarding the pros and cons of ferro rods, and whether you choose or don’t choose to carry them. Maybe you’ll change my mind.
