Are Micro Ferro Rods Worth the Hassle? Demonstration and Discussion.

Are micro ferro rods worth packing as a last-ditch effort to creat fire? Many people love micro rods and have a place for them in their set-ups, but for other folks, micro rods aren’t worth the hassle and would rather just carry a larger rod with a longer striking surface. I happen to be one of the latter.
Pretending that I carried nothing more than a ferro rod to light a fire, if I were to carry such a small ferro rod, I’d also ensure to have with me some effective tinder sources for catching such minimal spark output. And if I were to carry prepared tinders with me (which I do and always recommend), then I’d much rather just carry an additional, larger rod in my pocket as a back-up if I happened to be so careless as to lose my primary ferro rod.
Personally, I don’t see any reason to rely on such a small rod carried on a necklace, a survival bracelet, or boot laces and to plan for such as a last-ditch effort when there are more effective last-ditch effort tools far more effective than a micro rod. That said, are there realistic scenarios that exist outside of one’s imagination when carrying a micro rod would be a great idea?
What are your thoughts? Do you believe micro rods serve a purpose, or do you find them less of a valuable survival resource than other items? Feel free to add your comments regarding the pros and cons of ferro rods, and whether you choose or don’t choose to carry them. Maybe you’ll change my mind.

I own that micro rod. Bought it several years ago for the purpose of my overseas travel into countries I might have to bug out and require a survival kit that includes fire making. It comes with no instructions and so your demonstration of how to hold the tiny rod and strike was hugely appreciated.👍👍.

I think your homemade tender pads need to be re worked. I have a friendly swede fire starter necklace i wear every day and it has worked every time ive used it. It does take practice but can be mastered. Just an idea when I make my pads i add paraffin lamp oil to my paraffin wax it works wonders. It makes it easier to light and makes the paraffin wax dry softer and that makes them easier to fluff up. Id love to send you some to try out if you are interested let me know.

I use 2 cap fulls of the paraffin lamp oil to 1 bar of the gulf wax brand paraffin wax. You can adjust to your liking.

Thanks for your comments. Yessir, my tinder pads were too hard and I’ve long tweaked my recipe to use more paraffin lamp oil to keep them softer and more pliable.
