Yeah I think they really meant 'snowflake' - but maybe the writer just caught the headlines or other people's click bait titles - and misinterpreted completely. Being 'flakey' has been around forever and not necessarily being brought back into usage recently to describe millennials. Description says "word of the street" so they probably didn't look into what the term actually meant and jumped on the bandwagon...

belinskii Huh, that's an interesting viewpoint. From what I know, snowflakes mean that you melt easily, not that you're super special. I mean, we're all special - but kids nowadays have lived such a cushy life that they don't know "real" struggles and thus, they just melt every time something doesn't go their way.

I'm definitely with Felicia. I'm one of those people that don't like to make plans too far in advance, because my mood may change by the time that plan comes around. I also have some slight disabilities, which can severely impact how I feel on any given day, so I prefer to decide what to do each day as it comes. I'm not necessarily flaky, though, because when I say I am going to do something, I actually do it...I just don't decide until the day of, or day before. Haha. I'm sure people get frustrated with me. Oh well...

And in a work context it's so hard for us non-millenials because millenial colleagues will do that thing where they say yes to stuff when they already have a different work commitment, they can't actually be in two places at once and then someone has to cover for them, or the work thing has to be cancelled! In a work context that can just look really bad, and it's so hard for us to understand - "but you knew you have this regular thing every week on the same day and at the same time, so why did you say yes to doing something else when you already knew you were busy?", but they are just not used to saying no!!!!

Unicorn friend. Okay, I'm only a graduate student sooooo.... 1. Do you almost always say yes to an outing/event? Yes, since it's normally on a weekend. I'm usually just at school and I don't come off as super friendly and exciting so I'm always flattered and say yes when someone asks me to go hang out with them. 2. Do you normally attend over 80% of outings? Yes. I want to go out and have fun before a new school week begins 3. Are you normally punctual or late? PUNCTUAL. I go to school in Staten Island and live on campus so unfortunately going to the city/Brooklyn takes a while, thus i leave my place super early so I can make it to my destination on time. Back home in California, I'm also punctual because I avoid traffic and therefore arrive hella early

because I'm 20, I'm of the generation after millenials, so the home phone was really only used in elementary school and into middle school, and I was a little young to go out and make plans to meet a friend somewhere. I was also from a small town with one elementary school xD so even if I wanted to hangout with someone, you could usually just walk to their house rather than calling xD I remember the days after school though, when the only way to contact my mom at work to ask if I could go over to a friend's house was to borrow the phone at the school office xD

I'm 40 but I have a lot of people in my life who are millenials and this really really bothers me. Even now that I've figured out it's a millenial thing (it was so much worse before I knew!), I find it really hard not to take it personally after a while. I think so hard about whether to say yes to something (which my millenial friends probably take personally) and I'll do Dan's maybe thing, until I can figure out how tired I'll be, what work things I'll have on etc. Because to me, cancelling (other than because of an emergency) shows you aren't concerned about the other person's time and are willing to walk all over them. So after I put all that effort in to figure out if I can make it, they end up cancelling half the time anyway! It's a bad combination. They think I don't care enough because I don't say yes easily and quickly and I think they don't care about me because they don't put thought into planning and will push me aside for anything better that comes along. They feel like I'm inflexible and I feel like they are flaky. I've also noticed that although millenials will get frustrated at other flaky millenials, or other millenials who are flaky in a different way but in the kind of way I get frustrated at some who is regularly 15minutes late (annoying but not a massive big deal), whereas I feel personally offended by a constantly flaky millenial.
@louiseglasgow

Plus, the other thing that bugs me is the "oh lets do x sometime" and then you ask them about doing x and they're like "oh I don't want to", and I'm (internally) like "you were the one who suggested it in the first place.....what!?!?" I wouldn't even have suggested it in the first place, then I looked forward to it, and now you don't even want to do it.....again! OK so I've practically written an essay about this, but I genuinely feel like it is a barrier in relationships sometimes, not just for me but for other older people around millenials. Like eventually I just think "what's the point?" and I think they probably think - wow this is too much like hard work, what does she want from me? I try to think of it as a cross-cultural thing, because in a way that's pretty much what it is. But you know how it is, even when you know the logic of another culture, and you know it's not wrong, just different, when you're emotions are involved it's really hard to get past that! I don't see the point in making all these plans just to break them, when you could save all that energy by just not making them in the first place! (And don't even get me started on when I've had younger flatmates (translation: roommates) and thought it would be like when I was younger and we knew vaguely where each other was, and they think I'm being weirdly inappropriate. Hey, I don't care what you do, or where you are, I just want to know at what point I would call the police and where I would tell them you were supposed to be! To my non-millenial mind that makes all the sense and has zero to do with wanting to keep tabs on you. Honestly, nothing to do with that, it's just that police thing! Oh and also, because if we're sharing space I want to have it to myself sometimes, and to know that I will, rather than think you're going to come back any minute (but actually you already know you'll be away for two days but I don't need to know that!?!?). I've learned to accept that when it's a millenial it's seen as a gross intrusion of privacy to share that information (I'm talking when you'll be away overnight, or roughly what you're work and gym hours are, not keeping tabs on your every move!), so I don't ask anymore, but I find that stressful as a long-term way to share space, so I'm hoping to live alone for as long as I can possibly afford that, even if it means having very little money for anything else. That is how stressful I find that.

I read people below (not going to call anyone out), saying, "last time I flaked was because of x, y and z factors" but each of the ones I've read, my non-millenial brain says, "those are all legitimate reasons not to attend that social event, but they are all/mostly predictable, they were already true when you were invited, so why did you say yes at the time and then flake later, rather than just saying no to start with? To me that saves everyone's time. But I guess trying to look at it objectively, you guys are just more "in the moment" and you wait to see what the circumstances are when the time comes, whether they were predictable or not. More of us non-millenials deal with the predictable ones up front and then the non-predictable ones when the time comes. But they are just different types of logic, much as it pains me to say that! But the combination of these and other factors mean we hold a social commitment more highly overall too, so "it's cold out" doesn't trump the commitment for example. The commitment/obligation has a higher social pressure than our comfort. This doesn't mean we never flake, we just save it up as our occasional guilty secret. I think we are also much more scared (on average) of being seen as flaky.
@adurnaebrithil

so i guess im am a millineal..i was born in 92 so i believe i fit the construed defination. anyway. they touched on something good here. people feel obligated to say yes. thats the problem right there. i always tell my friends if they do not feel like doing this or that they need to say so. i rather you tell me no, and i believe feelings may be hurt more whenever you always answer yes but always end up not going. personally i just stop inviting said people. learn to say no. or that you rather not. to me it is just better that way.

I need people who are as serious about their friends as they are about their jobs, school or anything else. Friends are important.
