Motorcycle Performance is something we all would like to have in our bikes. Does the performance upgrades we do to our motorcycle match our skill levels. Are we building the motorcycles performance to a place that the modification does not meet our skills? Is the money worth it for the extra performance on our motorcycles. Motorcycle Performance - Modifications vs Skill Level

Excellent thought provoking video that I agree with 100%. I’ll be 68 next week and while I love power and the great rumbling sound that a Harley with after market exhausts, etc., I have never done more than a Stage One on any of my bikes. I’ve got all the power I need and your comment about skill level rings true. I had a younger man (non rider) ask me a couple of weeks ago if my bike would do the 120 mph shown on the speedometer and my reply was “not with me on it.” Like the old saying goes, “Never ride faster than your angels can fly.” By the way, I love the sound of your Road King. Great video. Keep them coming.

Not sure I would go to a big build on my engines. Maybe a cam would be ok...but not even sure about that. I have done full stage 1 on two of the three bikes. Nice upgrade in terms of reduced heat, more sound output, and a bit more power and torque (8-12%) In the end, riding skill to me is more important. Id rather be able to do a 18 foot figure 8 on a bagger in a parking lot flawlessly or balance that bike at 1 or 2 miles per hour without putting a foot down, than show how fast I can go. My 2 cents...Ride safe and enjoy the ride.

I have two bikes with Twin Cam 103 engines. I don’t look for ultimate performance from my bikes but I did install new bolt in cams, cam plates and high volume oil pumps (all S&S) 8:42 that were more conducive to my riding style and gave the bikes the lope and sound that I prefer. I have also installed better breathing air cleaners and after market exhaust. That’s enough for me other than some cosmetic or comfort upgrades. The rest of the money that I will be sinking into them will just be maintenance costs to keep them rideable and reliable. It’s all I need from these bikes and I’ve been owning Harleys for 40 years, never needed 140+ horsepower.

My 02 Twin-Cam 88 Electra Glide with carburetor has been upgraded with Stage 1 and recently Stage 2. I did a complete cam chest rebuild knowing I would have to replace the cam tensioner shoes at some point in the near future. So I took the plunge and rebuilt the entire thing. Honestly, moving to a stage 1 & 2 are the best bang for the buck on a TC88. I get more than enough performance now, especially when cruising on the highways. The GoldWing on the other hand is a big beautiful rocket. I have to really watch my speed because overall, she’s so smooth.

You bring up a great point about skill levels. Training should be ongoing and will make the risks go down a bit as you would know how to handle the emergency situation way before it occurs. More power could be argued to be a safety related as it would let you take off quicker if you needed to lol. I think some upgrades improve the reliability like the upgraded oil pumps and cam bearing. Really hard to say when enough is enough sometimes.

As you may remember, I’ve got a 98 FXSTC Softail Custom with 50K+ miles that’s pretty much stock. It has a Stage 1, breather, exhaust, bars and a bit more chrome. I’m perfectly happy with that 24 y/o 88” EVO. I decided to get a touring bike and purchased a new 2006 RoadKing Classic. I only did a Stage 1 to that bike. The usual, breather, exhaust, bars and a Sundowner saddle. I had it set up just to my liking. The power and performance was enough with the TC88” I had put 80K+ miles on that bike before I was unfortunately rear ended and the bike was totaled. My replacement bike was a new 2017 Street Glide Special. With a 107” M8 the power was plenty. Then the itch, I wanted a “Hot Rod!! So, I had my son do a Stage 4. I’m pretty certain I’ll keep this bike since at almost 65, I just want to ride. Use what would/could be upgrade money into travel money. I guess you could say, I’m sobering up from the upgrade addiction….. 👍

Interesting topic. I would say from an years of observation and being around motorcycles, skill level seldom matches the ability of the machine. I include myself in this, my bikes can go way further than I will push them. I am planing to do the exhaust on the Pan Am, simply because it removes weight and a heat source near the R foot. If I where to own a regular HD I would get a stage one and a tune and call it a day. One thing everyone forgets to add is better brakes, wanna go faster you need to upgrade the brakes. It is like you said and I say the same, its your money do what you want with it. Motorcycles are the ultimate rabbit hole for pouring money into.

On my baggers over the years. I do safety and comfort mods 1st. Next set of slip ons for a little Harley sound. I have always left my motors stock I am not racing them. all motor upgrades do in my opinion is eat more fuel. However on my 2020 Road Glide LTD I did put a fuelpak 3 on it. Let's see how that works. 3 stock items that always sucked on my baggers. 1. seat. 2. suspension 3. sound system. I always upgraded 1 & 2 #3., I can live without. I rarely do cosmetic upgrades I have done a few over the past 30 years. I do very long trips so comfort and safety is where i put my money . I still have my 1st Harley 1992 FXSTC bought it new for my birthday. The motor is still stock never had any issues. Now this bike is all about how pretty she is. Still the original paint and it is flawless. however the rest of the bike is custom.

🛑🛑 I did a Stage 4 Upgrade on my CVO Ultra Limited. I like the power and torque numbers the bike can now deliver; especially over the road when doing 2 up riding. That being said, I’ve seen some “monster numbers” coming out of a Harley 114 with just a Cam Change. My son in law has a 114. He just put an S&S 475 Cam in and Tune..he is now getting 115 HP and 123 PDs of Torque. 😀👍 I was always that guy, that said “never opened that nut because once the nut it’s alway open”, but now a days if Harley does the work; you get another years warranty. 💯😀👍 The 114 Milwaukee 8 is very, very receptive to a Cam Change, that will cost a a few Grand $$, but the performance upgrade is substantial. BoDean…to your point, 60 miles an hour, is 60 miles an hour no matter how fast you get there 🤔💯.

Well a year after this video was posted because I just found it. I’ll share my opinion. Personally I’m a rider not a street racer I actually prefer a nice leisurely ride on back country roads @ 40 miles an hour and for that I don’t need 140 hp motorcycle even on the interstate I don’t exceed the speed limit and I’d rather not even go that fast. It’s not from fear that I choose to ride slower it’s simply because I enjoy taking my time and for that reason I mostly ride alone. I wish that wasn’t the case but most people feel the need to display speed when riding motorcycles just because you can doesn’t mean you have to. In my opinion factory stock Harley’s are plenty powerful enough. My young self would disagree with my now self but then I’m not him now

It was totally worth it Craig and there will be the first video out this Thursday. We made some amazing memories and had some crazy obstacles, many times I said what could go wrong

I am probably in the minority. No engine performance upgrades for me. I do have the 114 in my Ultra. That is more than enough for this old timer.

Are you using a disco filter in the editing software to achieve that look at the front of your bike? 😉😂

With more power the chassis has to be able to handle the power...Either with old tech chassis it needs to be upgraded with aftermarket...Or with a new Bike the chassis should be new tech...

It’s a good point especially with these really powerful builds, is the rest of the bike ready for it?

Stock? What does that mean? 😂 I got a CVO thinking I would keep the mods to a minimum, Ha! 2 years in and I’m still making mods. I do think a stage 2 is the right balance of investment $/Return(power increase).

You refer to mirrors and seats as performance upgrades. I don’t, those are just making the bike fit you. Besides the stage 1 I really don’t think much more is needed. If I used my motorcycle more for say work transportation maybe I would get in the engine but as I don’t, it is hard to justify the expense in my head.

Thanks Ron and not really what I meant, was speaking to performance upgrades to make the bike faster that doesn’t match skill level. Sometimes I lose focus 😂

I like high engine performance.... in fact, I don't feel like my Victory has enough(as a professionally tuned "stage 2" engine). That said, I wouldn't do anything more to the engine, because I don't feel its suspension and brakes are up to handling anymore power. On the other side of the fence, the Husky scares me 😱... As a dirt bike, it has plenty of suspension and braking capability for its fire breathing lil' engine...I'm the weak link in that chain, off-road at my skillz level, I have to respect the Husky's power or it will get me over my head very quickly.

That’s actually a great point. I’ve seen a lot of these guys that have gone further with their bikes and the rest of the bike was not built for it

@@BoDean52 Too me this is a very important point. On most big tourers and cruisers the suspension & brakes are barely adequate for stock...Start adding big engine power without accounting for improved handling and stopping is a recipe for disaster.

I’ve owned over 20 Harley’s. I’m old. Also every other brand. In no way does Harley have any performance power. A 600 Yamaha has more performance. I own my Harley’s for cruising. That’s it. My zx14 for speed and performance. My Indian and Harley for cruising and rallies.
