Are Mountain Bike Shoes Really Worth It?

I can be very tempting to save yourself some money and just use any old shoe you have lying around the house, but it’ll cost you a lot more in the long run! Mountain Bike specific shoes may come with a bit of sticker shock, but theres a good chance youll find yourself spending more money by going with an alternative like a skate or athletic shoe.
In this video, we specifically talk about the Five Ten Freeriders, which are a flat/platform shoe. Ive had an excellent experience with this specific shoe time and time again, but I know there are others out there with similar build qualities.

My favorite part ab mine is the water resistance, the amount of times I’d literally walk through a creek without my shoes turning to puddles is amazing

So you probably know way more about this than me, but i like a flexible shoe. I ride with Puma shoes that are like wearing moccasins. I feel more connected and in control. Just my preference. Enjoyed the video!

It really comes down to personal preference. There are general qualities that most people like in a shoe such as stiffness and padding, but you like what you like! If it’s not broke, don’t fix it 👌🏼

New to riding, just bought 1st bike, Giant Stance 29 2. Have big feet (15us) did nice large flat pedal as recommended by my local shop. Videos like this one helped me decide on the 5 10 Freeriders. Thanks for the awesome content!!

I use my hiking boots in winter, and Keens in the summer. I haven’t found any MTB shoes that are wide enough for my feet. I’d sure like the stiffer sole and better grip, though.

Ok ok I’ll buy some mtb shoes! No really great video man appreciate it. I’ve been getting back into mountain biking and really enjoying it. I’ve been using an old pair of running shoes and the grip on my flat pedals aren’t very good and I have had my feet slip off while riding technical terrain. It looks like a good pair of mountain bike shoes add a lot of grip to prevent this.

Hi, would you recommend this shoes for longer periods of rides such as 100km / 62 miles? especially in summer? I rarely ride in winter. P.S Im not a mtb rider but more like road rider with flat pedals on hybrid bike.

I would say that if you have a good set of pedals, then you might benefit from these. However if not mountain biking, they might be “overkill” in a sense that they add weight with padding and protection you might not need. They’re not heavy, but they are heavier than cycling shoes

5.10 Freerider are super grippy, sure, but outer sole is destroyed and torn after few months :/ Freerider Pro lasts a bit more, less than a year, if your ride a lot

I think they are pretty good. That being said, they are also water resistant… but I can’t say I’ve ever felt that my feet were too warm.

@@mastajogurt7520 lol not that far. For my longer rides, I run clipless on my gravel bike. I tend to stick around 15-25 mile rides on my mountain bike. But I just got back from a week of riding in Bentonville where it was 105 and has no problems.

Unfortunately FiveTen shoes does not hold for me paired with Stamp 7 pedals. The shoe sole tears even after few months, this happened to me twice and for other riders as well. Upper part is definitely holds up, but what's the point if sole are broken.

@@TheShredShedMTB I have ordinary Freeriders (it think DLX), which I bought before Adidas bought the company, then I opted for Freerider Pro and both failed in almost same place. I had struggle to choose size as when they Adidas bought them, they changed the sizing. So I don't know I'm not convinced with the quality. Friend of mine also bought Freerider Pro last year and sole had some tears after few months, he did received refund.

I read that those 5 Ten's are pretty narrow around the toe box. Is that true? If so, do you have any suggestions for people with wide feet? In my region there are very little stores where I can try them on and I'm not really a fan of this back and forth between online store and customer....

I have some pretty wide feet myself...I find that the free rider is better for my feet, as the free rider pros are a bit longer and more narrow. I have a few different models of their shoes now and the regular free rider fits me best.

I have the FiveTens, Had some years off riding, Got back into it last year and just been wearing my Nike running shoes that were £20-£30. - Thought I would try out my old FiveTens today. And they felt awful in comparison. You can feel your pedals through the souls. And walking in them feels like your wearing bricks. My feet were in slight pain the whole ride and hours later still acheing. They also have little to no grip in the mud or wet conditions. - meanwhile the nikes are lighter, way more breatheable, grippy in all conditions, and privide extra suspension between my feet and the pedals. Only real downside is if you stump your toe on a rock it's gona hurt. but a risk I'm willing to take.. If you see the top DH racers they don't even wear gloves or body armor. it's all about Feeling light and agile that gives you a slight mental gain over feeling over encumbered. I kinda feel like the whole skate shoes for biking is a bit of a scam. like they really are awful in my opinion. - Also had the nikes about 8 years and still look brand new. trying to find the model of them and will update this. - Nike Lunarfly+ 3 Trail GTX (Not the best looking but I rate them)

Curious what type of riding you were doing. For trail, to me the Five Ten vs reg shoes is no comparison. Reg athletic shoes are trash on the pedals.

They help you keep your feet planted, but proper bunny hops can be done in any shoe. These will definitely help you prevent slipping though!

Not totally sure, but possibilities include 1) footwear that’s past its “toss” date (due to be addressed in a month or two); 2) need to fit the bike better to my physique; 3) advancing age and increasing infirmities. There probably are more issues, but I have no idea what they might be.

why these so called mtb shoes look like vans?i think its more like bmx, skatepark oriented,i ride in my adidas terrex swift solo,i ride XC mtb and i think they look more sporty and more suited for this discipline

personally, I think they provide a lot more protection that vans. these have a nice stiff toe cap that really protects your toes from roots, rocks and stumps

It is a bit difficult to see why FiveTens are any different from other casual or skate style sneakers. The main difference is mainly on the sole, the rubber is more sticky and is stiffer, it's one of those things that once you tried it, it would be really hard to go back to normal shoes.
