Going to a movie theatre is like going to a big family reunion. Tons of people that are interested in what you are interested in, all having a good time watching the movie together, blasting music - it's genuinely a great experience. Unless you get the old BAP BAP that is going around right now, that won't be a good experience. I still think that once the BAP BAP is gone, movie theatres will resume functions like normal and we can all get back to the norm one day. If theatres were to die, on the other hand, I honestly would expect protests or something - we can't let them go.

Lol. Interesting (and entertaining) debate. I think one point you guys missed was how much easier it is to pirate movies that come to streaming first. Unfortunately there will be millions of people who will save the $20 and download the movie from somewhere (in great HD quality), something which is much harder to do for theater releases. For that reason alone, I don't think movie theaters are going anywhere.
@nafetsbrusa48033 жыл бұрын
To this effect, VPN first, otherwise you have to lie to your internet provider like I had to. With the rise of every company having their own streaming service, they have also been implementing more ways to track and watch torrents on even some of the more unknown sites. Pirate safely everyone, movies have been boring or just dumb lately, not worth paying for. Ive always gone by the principle that if i really liked a movie i downloaded I would buy it, but if it sucked then im not gonna pay and I'll just delete the file anyways.

Haven't been to a theater in about 15 years. I would go again if theaters had some way of disabling cell phones.
@tisjester4 жыл бұрын
They legally can not disable cell phones. What if's would be too much of a liability. ie someone has a heart attack.. A Doctor misses an emergency call.. Parent misses a call from a babysitter about an emergency for their child ect. FCC would hunt down and fine anyone that does any sort of jamming. What they can do is ask people to turn of or silent their phones. They can also ask anyone that refuses to do so to leave the theater. I also hate it when people are on their cell phone. It does not happen often as many folks will tell them to shush lol.. but people worry that telling someone that is already rude enough to ignore the rules would also be rude enough to get crazy if you say anything to them. The best you can do is 1) do not go to theaters that have a propensity of people that ignore the whole talking during a movie (or worse bring a small child to an adult movie because they can not find or afford a babysitter) 2) Just learn to tune those distractions out.. (We all can be annoying in movie theaters.. Eating loudly.. Rustling sounds while opening things.. Making noises while your girl goes down on you in a theater?!?!?) Getting up to use the bathroom.. or any number of other things people do in the course of watching a movie. If there is a movie I really want to see in a theater.. I just wait a couple weeks for the majority of people that want to see it are gone. I then try to pick a time with the fewest people. Like 1st showings or Late last showings. I really like the whole "choose your seat" theaters where you buy your tickets ahead of time. If I do take a date?!?!? Yea it really is not all that much about watching the movie so intently that other people making any noise is a major issue. It then more about the Social aspect of the event. One last thing... I no longer bring in my own food / drink to the theaters. After finding out how little Theaters actually make off of movies I find I want to support them to make money so they keep upgrading all aspects of the movie going experience. They have some great upgrades now days. Lounge seating that is roomy.. Excellent food that you can eat there so you do not have to do the whole dinner and a movie as a separate experience.. Including alcohol if that is your thing. Great sound systems and Picture quality. It really is a premium experience nowadays at many movie theaters. I wish they did this for things like Broadway shows, plays, musicals, sporting events, and concerts. Once you see how it is when you are not packed in like sardines you really want that type experience as a normal experience and not just for the super rich or connected types...

Something I didn't hear touched on in this video at all is the social aspect of going to a movie theater. Even with the costs of home theater setups and big screens coming down significantly in recent years that it's affordable to have your own, there's one last thing a movie theater offers: the crowd. Some people really want to go to a crowded theater filled with others excited to see the same movie you're excited for. Hear the cheers, the applause, the reactions, etc. Saying "what's the point of a movie theater in 5 years" is like saying "what's the point of going to a concert?" Sure, you could get a much better sound and clarity from a high quality recording (without being accidentally elbowed in the head) but you're not in that crowd and not feeling the energy. The only thing I believe that would really threaten theaters is VR. You've got the at home benefit of better food and your own comfortable chair but you also get the big screen and sound with a crowd as excited as you are to see the movie. It's all the aspects of the theater without leaving your home. But, VR adoption isn't high enough for that. There have already been big steps in VR technology and it honestly won't be long before it's something that more people have. The Oculus Quest was a huge step in that direction. A little smaller, lighter, and cheaper and you've got the perfect mass adoption setup. Why go to a brick and mortar theater when you can just slip on a comfortable headset and get the same experience? Noisy kids? Mute them. Someone jumping around in front of you? Make them invisible. Can't do that in real life. We're not there yet for VR to take over theaters, but I see that as a bigger threat than home streaming. Once the social aspect has been replicated, then that's another big part taken out the theater experience. Not much left after that.

Really, movies like Interstellar, Inception and similar that are all about the experience of vastness and immersion and require the expensive technology to convey them, there is no alternative to a cinema. For cartoons, yes, I had almost the same experience at home. But with some movies that leave you with goosebumps, great emotions that won't leave you for up to a day, you can't get that experience at home. It requires the right setting and technology to fully deliver, what the creators have put into each frame. It's all about immersion. Fully disappearing from the world you live in for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Not just being a bit concentrated or losely attached, like at home. You. are. there. In the skin of the charakter. The emotions of the fictional reality hitting you unfiltered. That is what a cinematic movie experience is for me.

I think what's missing here is the business model for blockbuster films in general. The amount a studio makes at the theater dwarfs what is made on Digital. Putting out Onward is simply due to the fact that their theatrical is over, and any studio putting out a film is only doing it because their slate can't support withholding the film until theaters open again. I love going to the movies with my family. While it is fun to stay at home and watch a movie on Netflix sitting on the couch, the experience of going to the movie theatre is irreplaceable. It’s like saying that restaurants are a thing of the past because delivery services exist.

Oh.... this was a serious video I like going to the movies because it's an escape from home. I'll probably go see something after the apocalypse is over. And I like the popcorn... even if it is overpriced.

Ticket prices around my area are around $15 if you want to go with IMAX. I like going to the theaters but having a mainstream option of watching newly released movies at home would be amazing. I think they're testing it with Amazon but they're not advertising it well in my opinion.

You're missing the most important issue with directly putting them "online".... they are available for download the day of release, through example torrents. No way they make more putting them online instead of a movie theater

It's convenient to watch new movies without going out. But I don't think movie theaters are gonna be gone in quite a while.. Mainly because it's a destination, something to get out the house for. It's also a better experience both sound and video, not everyone has the setup to pull off theater A/V in their home.

movie theatres are the way to experience the movie, not to watch it but to experience it. as long as the same experience isnt coming to home at a reasonable priice, i am happy paying for concessions and going to the theatre

Theaters have been in decline. As soon as its more profit to skip the theaters as the first place to release a movie, there will be change.

Austin right! Movie theaters will never go away because companies like Disney and universal depend on them. For example, for being nominated for Oscar your movie should be released in movie theaters. This is a reason why Netflix bought one movie theater in nyc and nominate marriage story.

Also, If a Movie is released on a streaming service, it instantly gets pirated and suddenly everyone can get it for free. Like when a Movie like Avengers Endgame releases, there's so much hype build up that people can't wait for the the DVD release, they would go to the theater ASAP.

i used to go to the theaters a LOT when i was younger and all because tickets were way cheaper and concessions didnt cost at least $15 a visit. tickets were $2.50 where im from! i dont go to theaters just because of the price and now its a shame i basically pushed movies out of my life because of this and moved on to free streaming

Big reason why movies will not switch to a pure streaming platform: piracy. While pirated movies in theaters appear the first week, they are almost always low-quality cams and it often takes WEEKS for high-quality movies to appear. With streaming services, Full HD rips come up day one, and with VPNs becoming the norm along with the tens of thousands torrenting movies, that makes policing it nearly impossible. Theaters will come back.

I can't feed my movie theater experience addiction right now because they've been closed The movie theaters won't die because it's an experience and people will keep going for that experience Back in the 90's my town's movie theater used to serve Domino's pizza for $2 a slice which was nice My best friend when I was in middle school had Star Wars: Episode 2: Attack of the Clones before it was in the theaters but he said they paid, I think, $200

Dating and socialising with friends will keep Cinemas alive. As long as the planet has children the cinemas will never die. Before anyone mentions inviting your girlfriend to your home for a streaming service I would like to point out that on average you have gone through at least 2 or 3 dates by then. Also "Netflix and Chill" has changed in definition since its original creation to reference more than just watching a movie. 😂

I work at a movie theater and I can tell you movie theaters will not be going extinct anytime soon. We are always insanely packed reaching nearly our max capacity every weekend day, and Tuesday (half off tickets and popcorn). I’ve seen the numbers. Trust me it’s not happening.

The main reason I don't like the theatre, is the half-hour of ads I have to watch beforehand.

The fact that all the blockbuster releases have been delayed for Q4 would prove to me that the studios still need the cinema. At least for the US, it's apart of our culture to go out and see a film. That isn't going to change anytime soon.

Low budget theatres will probably shut down however the top cinemas will never shut down due to the experience you can't get at home

Does anyone remember "the interview"? Was going to be a theater release but instead when to digital release? Everyone thought that would kill the theater but um still theaters open. Movies wont die just like the actual theater hasn't because it's an experience.

The one major thing you guys left out was how much it cost studios to make these movies. Some movies cost $100 to over $200 million dollars to make. The highest grossing VOD of all time only brought in $400 million. That was the pacquiao-mayweather fight at $100 per view.

As much as Love Austin and its difficult to disagree with him and his well toned biseps; I would have to agree with Matt. Im a BIG movie buff but if i had a choice to watch a new movie at home or in theaters, I would choose my home. Its convenient, comfortable, and cheaper.

My bet is movie theaters are going to stay for 2 reasons: 1) Expensive movie theaters can technologically stay one step ahead of in-home setups. I just finished Linus's video about the Looking Glass Stereoscopic 3D prototypes, and while far off, I think that's the kind of tech theaters will invest in. Would you rather spend $8k+ on something you might use a few times a month, or just bite the bullet, and spend the $40 for a one-time experience? 2) As other people are saying, sometimes people just don't have the right setup at home now anyway. Maybe they're internet's slow, their in-home equipment isn't good enough to run movies, or they just have nostalgia for that big screen feeling. Of course that last one could die down in time, but I'd say it'd need 10-20 years until any random person can reasonably replicate a theater experience in-home.

Supporting movie theaters makes financial sense for studios, because their profits from big releases selling millions of $15-20 premiere tickets far out strips profits from increased subscription on a streaming platform. It's the same as why Spotify has not killed live concerts. Given that, studios will put the money in now to make sure theaters don't go under, and it's why they have not made a concerted effort to kill them up until today.

I prefer stay at home and chill but my gf loves the experience of going to the movie theater. There is a type of consumer that won't drop the idea of going out to watch a movie, because they do not enjoy being at home that much.

I enjoy going to the movies with my kids and girlfriend. It's a different sort of environment and watching movies is a lot more immersive than sitting at home with distractions EVERYWHERE. Also... we need to reel in all these streaming options because it's going to end up costing just as much as cable did with all the subscriptions

4 people go to the theater to see a movie at $20 each which equals $80. How is a $20 rental gonna make them money when I got 10 people at my house watching it for practically $2 per person! Theaters are going nowhere til they figure out this dilemma and there is no solution!
