Are New Ethics Rules Needed as Gorsuch, Roberts & Thomas Face Questions over Finances?

Three conservative Supreme Court justices are now embroiled in a growing ethics scandal about their personal and financial connections. Recent reporting has revealed that Justice Neil Gorsuch sold property he co-owned to the head of a major law firm that has since had many cases before the court, Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose lavish gifts and payments from billionaire and conservative activist Harlan Crow, and the wife of Chief Justice John Roberts was paid over $10 million in commissions as a job recruiter placing lawyers at elite law firms. Legal experts and lawmakers are increasingly pushing for ethics reform on the high court, with the Senate Judiciary Committee holding a hearing on the issue on Tuesday. “Because they don’t have an ethics code, you don’t know whether they’re doing things in an above-board way,” says Vox senior correspondent Ian Millhiser. He also discusses growing frustration that California Senator Dianne Feinstein has not resigned her seat amid a prolonged absence from the Senate due to illness, which is stopping Democrats from confirming federal judges.

I think there is a link with Scalia's school, Harlan Crow, and remaining republican supreme court justices. They have tried to make the US government more conservative by forcing policies that were against the will of the majority of the people. Religious Freedom, Citizens' United, 2nd Amendment, cut taxes for the rich, cut oversite for financial institutions, Military Industrial complex, and cultural issues. The corruption runs deep amongst supreme court justices.

This is a good reason to end lifetime appointments and Don't expand the Court. Let them sit in the bench for 10 yrs then out they go.

The reversal of the Citizen's United case for one... putting 'dark money' corruption in our political system on hyperdrive. The SC in their 'vast and unmatched wisdom' decided money is speech in that case. Despicable self-aggrandizing, self-enriching frauds.

Clarence Thomas has taken ' Corruption " to a whole new level...
@cboy5oc
@cboy5oc Жыл бұрын
The judges have rallied behind Thomas because they are all guilty, no one is beyond reproach. Cruz is misrepresenting all the trips that others took and were reimbursed for work. He does this ALL the time. It is called drawing false parallels. Kevin McCarthy does this also, most recently regarding the debt ceiling. Neither can be believed.

Anyone remember a VP of the U.S. that resigned over 'issues' not unlike this...from the book "Nixon, A Life in Full"......"Agnew had be taking gifts and cash on at least forty occasions. He (Agnew) agreed to pay $10,000 (a lot of money then) and 3 years probation for not filing a complete tax return, then resigned".

The Supreme Court has no code of ethics. Roberts and Thomas seem outraged that ProPublica and other journalist point out the absence of ethics. The reason the public does not have any confidence in the SC is not the fault of journalists - its that the SC feels rules to not apply to them.

This more than proves that the ethics, and laws, of the supreme court and their members need to be revised. Problem is, I can't find a single member of congress that isn't corrupt themselves. They would only pursue Supreme Court reform if they had something to gain...or can get a few good soundbite. There just isn't a real check and balance anymore, only the illusion of it. I think we could start over and do better!

If any branch of our government should represent the 'adults' in the room, it should be the Supreme Court. These judges should be highly experienced, and known for their integrity, ethics, and respect for the law and the Constitution. The current Court has lost a substantial amount of the populace's trust, as well as their respect for several of the Justices, and are waiting for the Chief Justice or the Legislature to do something about it - other than act defensive. Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Barrett - none of these people have any business sitting on the highest court in the country, and with each day, further denigrate the reputation of the Court. The lack of a 'code of ethics' for the Court has only allowed people like this to get away with deeply problematic behavior.
