Very helpful! I already had an S-Video cable that I ordered from Nintendo, but I was able to get a component cable a few years ago for $70 (when that was the going price). At the time, it seemed like a lot, but now I'm VERY glad I bought it when I did! I haven't used it yet, so it was very helpful to learn that you still need the A/V cable for audio, and that you need to activate progressive scan mode. Thanks!

These days people are modding their Gamecubes with HDMI. Technology does catch up after all.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 4 жыл бұрын
You actually don't need to mod a Gamecube. It has a digital port in the back (DOL-001 anyway)...You get a GC Video HDMI adapter ($70-$100) and it is a plug and play thing. You CAN mod a Gamecube with an internal HDMI port but with as good as the digital output is it's not really necessary.

The video compression here (which is just typical of KZbin so no offense to you) really does NOT do justice to the quality of the Gamecube component cable. Even with how crap built-in HDTV video processors often are with analog signals, the GCN component cable is phenomenal on TVs I've used mine on. I've tested the Wii component out as well on my TV and a few others, but even that doesn't stack up to the GCN cable. I suppose it makes sense; since the GCN cable is taking the "pure" digital signal and converting it to YPbPr instead of the Wii's straight cheap-and-dirty analog YPbPr signal, the picture WOULD logically be better (color-quality wise, it's even scary close to VGA). Deffo not worth hundreds of dollars though. I got *lucky* having to pay "only" $100 for my D-Terminal cable and $20 more for a D-Terminal to RCA converter cable last summer. (GCN D-Terminal cables, for the uninitiated, put out the exact same video signal as the RCA component cables; it's just a different plug, hence the need for a converter cable.) Also: someone _has_ whipped up a hack to "clone" GCN component cables, and with the bonus of also being available in VGA and digital DVI varieties. That said, though, it requires fine-pitch soldering and knowing how to program an FPGA, so I'm just waiting until someone starts selling pre-modded GCNs with these (since someone already has plans to do so).
@BrettDarien
@BrettDarien 9 жыл бұрын
***** Interesting. I would love to see it possible to grab the Gamecube's pure digital output signal and play it in VGA or DVI. The Dreamcast, for example, looks awesome in VGA so I wouldn't expect anything less from the Gamecube.
@maliciousbugman
@maliciousbugman 9 жыл бұрын
***** It's not the same project as the one I mentioned earlier, but check out electronash's Gamecube HDMI project (same principle in terms of digital video although this also has digital audio). You can find his videos easily just by searching "electronash gamecube" on KZbin. Also, the official GCN cables _can_ be modded for VGA and it can be found relatively easy via Google, but a) I don't have a good TV with VGA inputs. b) I'll be goddamned if I'm risking destroying my cable in the first place, and c) as aforementioned, the GCN component's quality is seriously close to VGA quality. Naw, what I'd love to see is someone produce a video box for the Gamecube with multiple video out options (Component, VGA, HDMI, and maybe SCART) a la Dreamcast video boxes. Apparently, though, the biggest issue with producing a plug-and-play GCN component clone is duplicating the plug for the Digital A/V Out.

I got a question. I have the Dreamcast vga with audio port from tomee. I have noticed the previous and official vga cords had some kind of converter box ( I am assuming a dac, similar to the gc component cable). Do you have any insight into the quality of that cord? And if you were to rate the gc's 480p output against that of the wii's out of 10. What would you rate it? I am hunting one down and want to know if its worth the trouble.
@maliciousbugman
@maliciousbugman 9 жыл бұрын
phantomgfx I can't speak from personal experience myself, but apparently the straight plain VGA cables produce lesser pictures than good boxes (softer picture, color bleeding), and being plain cables, don't give you any other options should a game you're playing not support 480p. If you're serious about good video quality for the Dreamcast, I'd check out one of the boxes made by BeharBros (the Hanzo or the Toro; the latter of which also outputs SCART RGB which is the next best thing for games that can't even be forced into 480p). The only thing is, the Behar Bros produce high quality goods by hand, so be prepared to pay more for their products. Still cheaper than VGA boxes from back in the day, though. As for my thoughts on GCN vs Wii component, I'd put the GCN at a 10, and my Wii at about a 7. Later revision Wiis (look for ones made in 2010 or so for GCN compatibility) have better component, but I'd still put that at about an 8 or 8.5.
@phantomgfx580
@phantomgfx580 9 жыл бұрын
cool. I always wondered about that. Will look into a vga box down the rd. The component on the other hand will serve good purpose for me now. The wii I have is post 2010 so I believe the picture is of the higher quality. would like to sample the likes of gameboy player and fzero in maximum clarity. thanks for the input.

+Pika Channel No it isn't possible, the gamecube component cable has a chip in it that converts the digital video to analog video. Only Nintendo and the company that made the MX chip know how to make that certain chip and they never released any information on how it was made. There has been somebody who cloned the chip and has a tutorial but it isn't easy and can't be mass produced for that matter. If it were possible to do what this guys initial question was, then it would have been done long ago by third party companies.

I know most people don't like this option because of how inconvenient it is, but I got a 32" Sony Trintron Wega CRT TV on craigslist for $10. My Wii with component cables looks better in 480i on that TV than it ever did in 480p on my LCD TV. I wouldn't be surprised if a Gamecube with an s-video cable looked great as well. And I can enjoy my N64 the way it was designed to be played, so it's just such a great option for gaming at resolutions below 720p. The downside is that the TV probably weighs 200lbs. I'd wager a guess that the best image quality you'll see on a Gamecube is going to be on a CRT, regardless of whether or not it's in 480i or 480p. For every Nintendo console up until the Wii U, HD was basically an afterthought and not really done well enough to worry about.

No he did not get ripped off. At the time that he bought that the cables where 200 to 300 dollars. But a year later someone found a way to create third party alternatives. Projects like the 'EON GCHD' and the 'GC Video Plug n Play' entered the market. These alternatives are priced around 100 dollars. So the market shifted abit. These days most of the original cables are sold for more than 200 dollars. Although some people sell them for 100 dollars because the demand for the originals has lowered somewhat since the introduction of third party alternatives.

Firstly, thanks for the video and I liked the comparison showing different video cables using F-Zero. Sometimes I wonder how Nintendo actually markets/advertises things because at times they are a bit clueless. They only sold this cable through their own online shop at a time when less of us had internet connections to start with and then the company finds out that not many people are using these cables (maybe because they didn't know about them in the first place or where to get them) so they stop the whole thing. Also these cables won't work correctly on PAL cubes without using Freeloader first and then using an import game, even though there is a port on older PAL cubes for component. Although I have a large Gamecube collection I won't be buying this cable. At the moment you can buy a cheap second hand (older model) Wii plus Wii component cables to get a similar effect at a cheaper cost. However, I believe there is a 'slight' difference in quality between the Wii and GameCube component display for cube games which kinda fuels purists to get a cube component cable. If Nintendo were to make a limited quantity of these cables again I'm sure they could get their money back and make a profit easily, having said that in a few years time I'm sure people will be offering crazy money on rare amiibo's. The money however won't be going to Nintendo just like these cables on ebay.

I don‘t know if you knew the PAL Gamecube because they don‘t support Progressiv, they only have to choose between 50hz and 60hz (by holding B like the NTSC Gamecube but it automatically comes the option to choose at the beginning in PAL Gamecube). But there‘s a alternative to get the good picture Quality, which is Scart Cable. because they get an clearer image but they don‘t have a higher Resolution because it‘s still interlaced signal but it‘s 576i than 480i. So Scart is also an Analog Cable just like Component. But it does not worth to use PAL Region to buy Component because i noticed then when i got the PS2 Component because they‘re Cheaper. if you get the Component Cable for the PAL Gamecube, it always the same quality that Scart does also in 576i. so it does not worth to get these for 300 or 400 €. So it‘s good enough to get an Scart Cable for 40 € for PAL Region but Component is way better for NTSC Gamecube. But all Scart Cable for working with GCN, SNES or even N64 (only in modded version) are not all equal, they can cause Sound Buzzing and have also weird dots in the Video Image due to the lack of Shielding. So it‘s worth note to get these from Retro Companies where they produce in Good shape for 20 to 40 €. I got the Official Gamecube Scart for 40 bucks and it‘s worth it to use it for PAL Region, so i‘m happy that i got it :P.

@Blustride 8 жыл бұрын
justadrummervienna An interlaced signal that has been deinterlaced will never look as good as a native progressive signal. Interlaced signals are effectively half the resolution of a progressive signal, so it's possible for interlacing to cause artifacting during fast camera movements. Deinterlacing algorithms will cause artifacting also, and may blur the picture. The output signal absolutely does matter.

Actually, the GameCube component cables are only worth getting if you own an NTSC GameCube with a GameBoy Player. Quality wise, RGB SCART and Component on the GameCube is identical. But only the PAL GameCubes support RGB, NTSC GameCubes do not. The only advantage the component cables offer over RGB is progressive scanning, but only the NTSC consoles support progressive. On the PAL units, you'll only get either 480i or 576i, not 480p. Hell, you don't even get 576p. So for PAL users, there is no value to component cables. You'd be a fool to pay $200US for them. For about $60AU, you can buy an RGB SCART cable and a RGB SCART to HDMI upscaler and get exactly what the component cables can offer for only a puny fraction of the cost. NTSC users don't have that luxury because their units don't support RGB. If they want to get component out of GameCube games, their best option is to just get component from the Wii. But if they want to play GameBoy games in component, they're screwed.
@WhiteJarrah
@WhiteJarrah 7 жыл бұрын
If you are using the PAL GameCube, the best option would be RGB SCART. To display it on a CRT with component inputs, you could buy a SCART to Component transcoder, which converts the RGB to YPbPr. There are also the HD Retrovision component cables for the SNES, which convert the RGB to YPbPr for a direct plug and play option. Although they are intended for the SNES, they'll work on a PAL Gamecube.

+interests10 That's probably a composite cable you're using. Composite cables are the worst nowadays. However, comparing it to other gaming systems the GameCube's composite output isn't that bad. If you have a North American GameCube the best one is the YPbPr (component) cable, as this video mentioned. Unfortunately, these are very expensive now in most places. If you're on a budget s-video would be the next best thing. If you have a European GameCube, the best it can use is RGB Scart.

So the only reason for this GC Component Cable is to play a Game Boy Player with the best quality. Otherwise it's only a waste of money. @What's Poppin? what exactly you want to know? The GC has on start a Composite Cable (Yellow for picture (Analoge out), and red/white for sound) On the Wii you have on start a composite cable too. A Component Cable with Red/blue/green, and sound with red/white is an upgrade in picture quality. And because it's way cheaper, you buy a Wii + Component Cable and still have enough money for some games. It's nice to have a GC Component Cable, but i would never pay that price.
