I got my used Gamecube component cable cheap for approx. $10 from a Gamestop back in 2006. I am still very happy with the quality jump from composite. I'm glad I kept that Gamecube setup when I bought my Wii U (and gave my Wii to my parents to use for Wii Fit Plus).

Helped me a ton. Just got a Wii backwards compatible for a killer $5 bucks at a yard sale last week for playing my gamecube games solely. Yet three days later I bought 2 gamecubes and 24 games for only $48 bucks (one has the GB player complete). So, I sold one gamecube and a few games, and kept the one with the gameboy player just for that. Now, after watching this, I am glad I did for more than that purpose. Great videos. I just recently started collecting again after my daughter and I were playing emulators. I went from 2 consoles and only 12 games in December of last year to 16 consoles and 178 physical games. :)

Thanks for all the great information, I was totally unaware of what the Wii2HDMI really did as well as the difference between component on the wii vs. the gamecube itself. After I watched this, I went and ordered a Gamecube Component cable and I have to say I'm so happy I did and I wouldn't have done it without your guidance and video. So thank you. Also the gameboy adapter mixed with 480p was a very good tip that I also jumped onto :-)

I got an original component cable a couple years back. I was obsessed with finding them. $5 at gamestop. I had to search endlessly online, call stores across the country and I eventually found two of them. One in New York, and one in Seattle. I called a friend and talked him into driving 30 miles into Seattle to buy it and mail it to me. So stoked. One gamestop employee I talked to through all this was a serious dick and practically called me an idiot because he knew for a fact it didn't exist and that the gamecube never ever had a component cable.....I actually went through a similar thing today while looking for ps2 component cables. That's how I found your channel. Subbed.

+Lars Agerbæk I do think the game cube looks good. i'd say it's second after the wii and Wii-u ( they literally looked the same so they are both at number 1) here's my break down of worst to best looking consoles. keep in mind I also consider function as part of the asthetic. the reason being that if something doesn't look "tidy" functional wise to me it looks bad. also i'm going by original releases , not the resized re-releases that usually looked way better than the original. 5- worse 5. Atari Jaguar - this thing seriously looked goofy especially after attachments. 4. Nintendo 64 - While it was a "sleek" design, it's odd shape left lots to be desired. fitting this in a home entertainment set up with other gear was impossible. you had to give this console a private space of it's own and no because of cooling but because of the odd ass shape. Nothing could sit on it and it didn't sit well on top of any thing either. 3. Apple pipin - this thing was just an eye sore all around. and it's functional asthetic was terrible too. 2. Atari 2600 (original wood grain panel version) - While it was stylish for the 80's this console looks about as awe inspiring as a tree stump. Nothing about it said "awesome" hardware. it was also huge and shaped in a manner that did not facilitate stacking it with other gear. 1. PS3 - now before you shoot me , hear me out. first off the Original PS3 was honking huge. to boot it had the oddest shape of any console I can think off. There's a reason people joked about it being a goerge forman grill. There was even a youtube video were some on empty a PS3 's guts and turned the console into a mini grill. Best' 1. SNES - only slightly goofy and toy looking , this console still looked good , sadly it yellows with age and starts to chip so deduct some points for that. The console does sit well on top of other equipment , but well it's a top loading cart bases system so yeah you won't be sandwiching this console. 2. NES - it's simple functional and really nto half as ugly as people today make it out to be. back in the day it had what was considered a "futuristic" look. in an age where wood grain paneling was still being plastered all over every thing under the sun, this console stood out. It stacked well on top of gear, but it had a deceptive look about it as you couldn't put any thing on top of it actually. But then again. back in 1986-1990 you'd be hard pressed to find a piece of entertainment tech that could actually fit on top of this puppy. for it's time it was one of the most compact pieces of gear you could buy. 3. Dream cast - sega;'s last system was apretty one. it's top loading tray meant that you wouldn't be putting any thing on top of it and you always had to ensure door 'clearance" space , but it's simple square profile and relative light weight meant you could set it on top of some other gear easily. aside from that the color scheme was pleasing (even if abit ripped off from Nintendo) and the console just had good lines. it was eye pleasing , especially the special edition black version. 4. Game cube - Nintendo really out did them selves with this console. it was simple cube shaped , and a easy carry handle and was compact enough to fit in just about any entertainment center set up you threw at it. better yet there were/are a vast array of color options to choose from. 5. Xbox 360 - Sure it's internals were not the best designed as numerous revisions continued to overheat well into 2009 despite being 4 years after the console's release. that said the 360 , looked sleek (if a bit bulky in weight) , and it stacked well with other equipment. (usually on top of other equipment) I often stack my Direct TV box then my dvd player with the xbox 360 on top of the stack and every thing sat good and still cooled well. 6. PS1 - I never really owned one , I did play one over at a friend's house. all in all it was a well designed console. again like many consoles it was top loading so you couldn't set stuff on it , but it's simple rectangle space made it easy to stack asthetically with other gear in an entertainment center. it's dark grey color scheme was pleasant and made it stand out from Nintendo and sega. 7. Original Xbox - It was huge , it was heavy , and it was matt black. call me crazy but in my opinion the original xbox was an awesome console , it dripped with style that said "bad ass hardware inside". I will however admit to secretly wanting them to make a slim model , after having owned the system for a few years at the time. 8. Neo Geo- ok this is probably the least functional asthetically of the "good looking" consoles. but the fact I got it so high on my list says volumes for how awesome this system looked. The system was black and gold and every thing about this console's looks said "nuclear bomb awesome hardware inside". sure I never owned one (though I plan on collecting one when I can get the money to do so), but there wasn't a kid I didn't know that didn't start to drool when they walked past a demo display of this awesome piece of gaming history. 9. XBOX one - I haven't gotten this console yet and many people think i'm crazy but , I really like the look of this system , It's simple (even if bulky). it's rectangular and simple yet very functional in design. and honestly i'm at the age where simple design is better. I no longer care about my system's look " cool" or "neat". just give me something that does it's job and fits well in a stacked entertainment center. further more I think you could even stack some things on top of this as long as you left vent room between the two. 10. Wii/Wii-U - both these consoles look virtually the same , there are slight differences but they are moot , they are both rectanglular and white (default color). I love the use of slot loaded disc drives , it really made them stand out appearance wise as well allowed their tiny size. I relaly can't see this console not fitting in any where. best yet , like the game cube Nintendo has manufactured these systems in multiple colors.

I bought a 32" Sony Trinitron CRT TV on Craigslist for $10. It's only 480i, but it has a component input and 16:9 mode. My Wii looks so much better on that TV than it does in 480p on my HD TV. I use it for all consoles that don't do 720p or higher, it's totally worth it if you don't mind that it probably weighs around 200lbs.

Kwyjibo O_o I also have a Trinitron CRT that I bought back in 2001 and its extremely heavy like you said. Mine is ntsc / pal, but in only has component and no rgb scart. Everything on the tv looks absolutely beautiful because it has such a high pixel density for a crt. The only downside is that it maxes out at 480i, which is weird considering that it looks like that tv could easily do 480p.

What did Nintendo gain from putting a lock-out chip in the component cables, or from disabling digital out in PAL versions? Who benefits from it? It boggles my mind.
@WarthogRacer

Jiggle Squirt Well since you can only buy expensive official Nintendo cables, so Nintendo benefited.
@Dant2142
@Dant2142 9 жыл бұрын
Jiggle Squirt Well, its more complicated than that. There isn't really a lock-out chip per se, it just acts as one. You see, Component is, technically, an analog signal, and was created almost specifically for DVD players; its just information normally digital (Difference from Blue, difference from red, and combined sync) in the video codec DVDs use, represented as an analog waveform, because that was the simplest and best looking option back when DVDs were new and CRTs (that need analog signaling to display) were the dominate type of display. The Digital A/V port is exactly that--Digital. It outputs both digital audio (IIRC, people have worked on optical audio mods, which would be really nice to have) and /digital/ video, using some very obscure signaling. The chip in the Component cables is there to translate the digital signal into the analog Component signal, as well as provide the system with some information about what resolutions can be output to the display (simular to the EDID stuff used in DVI, HDMI, and Displayport for auto detecting resolutions) Really, Nintendo was actually thinking ahead with the whole digital output, but it ended up kicking themselves and their customers when HDMI and DVI proved too immature for the time and making cable to adapt for those too expensive. Technically speaking, if someone put their nose to the grindstone and wanted to get crazy, I see no reason it wouldn't be possible to get effectively native HDMI output from a Gamecube because of that port. Imagine how good that would look and sound.

I think Nintendo just shit on US players on RGB and european players on component, on purpose. There is no reason why one would disable component, no reason. It would be fine, if it somehow broke 50hz tv or something. RGB was on SNES but they disabled it from N64, what the fuck :D They are intentionally fucking these things up and i really dont like them because that

Adam I've watched a couple of your videos now and in this one and the one on PS2 quality you've said that the Wii2HDMI and PS2 to HDMI adapters are basically the same as component cables. But I got to say that there actually are differences between the picture quality of a component cables and the HDMI adapters even at the same resolution. And to be honest which one is better is actually entirely dependent on what game you're playing and also dependent on the size of TV you use. For smaller TVs component will look "slightly" better while for larger ones Wii2HDMI/PS2 to HDMI will look (again) "slightly" better. At least that's what I've noticed in my research and my own personal experience anyway.

Lord Rayken It's hard to explain but in most cases some of the little details are more visible in component than in the Wii2HDMI, but on occasion I've found the opposite for some games. I guess it kind of depends on graphics engine used or even the visual style of the game for which one looks better.

Hey Adam I know you don't like playing games on Computer, but the Dolphin emulator for gamecube makes games look gorgeous. You can do things like 8x Anti aliasing to remove jagged edges, 16x Anisotropic filtering to make distant textures look amazing, but the best one is to run the game at up to 4 times it's normal resolution for just purely amazing quality you would never expect from a 6th generation game. Of course you need a pretty powerful PC to run all those enhancements, I myself only run 4x anti aliasing, 16x Anisotropic filtering and 3 times normal resolution. For some of the more good looking games like Twilight princess I need to turn it down to no anti aliasing, 8x aniostropic filtering and only 2 times normal resolution but the game still ends up looking better way better than even it's Wii counterpart. And there's also a cable you can buy to hook a gamecube controller into your computer.

I own a lot of the games, but honestly no one cares about emulators. Even if they did care they would go after the distributors and not the end user. Nintendo actually got one of the sites coolroms to take down all of the Nintendo games(there wasn't a court battle Nintendo just asked them to take the games down and coolroms bent over for them). Nintendo is a company driven almost purely on nostalgia at this point so emulation hurts their bottom dollar. Why buy a Wii U and buy Mario game number 90 when you can get a free emulator and play Mario games 1 through 89 entirely for free? Still I don't think it hurts their bottom dollar all that much because there's a ton of Nintendrones out there.

AdamKoralik Apparently, the problem with 480p on the Gamecube isn't that there's a decoder chip in the cables, but it's actually that the Digital AV Port's proprietary connection hasn't been cracked yet. This is all according to HD Retrovision, the company that's currently making the SNES and Genesis component cables. They said that at some point in the future they may make GC component cables, so their is some hope.

+joe m If you don't have enough money for the Gamecube Component cables, there is a cheaper alternative which is a mod you can get on your Gamecube to get HDMI output which has the same video quality as the official Component Cables. This mod pulls the pure loss less digital video and audio signals from a Gamecube and converts them to HDMI. This mod can only be performed on Gamecubes with the Digital Video output in the back however. Still, I highly recommend you look into this mod :D

It should also be mentioned that people might get lucky and find the Japanese D-terminal cable for a decent price which also carries the component signal. I ended up going this route because I got a good deal. You'd have to get a d-terminal to component adapter though. Or if you have an XRGB-Mini that has a d-terminal input you're be good to go. Dishing out the cash for a component cable is definitely worth it if you're a die hard.

Ralph Rodriguez You´re absolutely right. I paid $60 on my d-terminal cables instead of $200+ on a component. Thing is the that d-terminal is EXACTLY the component cable but with a different, japan-only socket connector. Solaris Japan sells d-terminal to component adaptors for $17 plus shipping. I personally also use them on the xrgb-mini without an adapter.

I have the GameCube component cables and it definitely makes a huge difference in picture quality. It is true that you'd have to press and hold B on the boot up screen to enable progressive scan. But on my GameCube, when a game boots up, it automatically goes into progressive scan without me having to press and hold the B button. The GameCube that I have I bought on launch day back in the day. Maybe early production runs of the system did this?

I was lucky enough to get me some of the component cables for the Gamecube when I first moved to Canada (NTSC Gamecube and all that). The difference they make are absolutely mind blowing. I don't see too many people doing a lot of game capture using those cables which has a lot to do with why I bought them. Tried upscaling it as well but I prefer the native 480p. If you were using a PAL system (Australian anyway) like I was before I moved here your pretty much stuffed.
@Synathidy
@Synathidy Жыл бұрын
If you tried upscaling it and didn't like the results, I'm guessing it was a cheap upscaler. A good upscaler (Retrotink 5x, etc.) will only ever improve picture, or at least not worsen it at all. You get exactly what you pay for with that stuff. Fortunately, upscalers are really only most essential for those who need an HDMI signal for capturing footage. If you got a TV with a component input, you're good. Amazing how complicated playing GC games has become just in 20 years.

I have the Wii to HDMI adapter, and yeah, the console proper can't do better than 480P. But the adapter *does* allow the Wii to output video at 480p, while the AV cables only allow 480i (naturally). It also frees up the AV port, simplifying the wiring a little too.

It's about as striking going from s-video to 480p as going from composite to s-video. Side note, I tried the component cables on an LCD TV a while ago and it looked like absolute trash and had unplayable levels of input lag. HD CRT looks gorgeous and has no (or very minor) input lag (Toshiba 32" 720p/1080i circa 2004).

Regarding PAL Gamecubes, Component cables actually were distributed in Australia and for a long time you could buy them directly from Nintendo Australia's customer service (I actually rang them the other day to see if they had any left and sadly no dice). To my knowledge, the PAL games blocks progressive scan not the cable. So you're stuck with 480i (which does defeat the purpose of gettting the cable) unless you get a mod to force boot some PAL games in 480p. S-video cables however will not work with a PAL Gamecube, plus the PAL Wii and N64. I've seen this first hand myself, however there are modded S-video cables that can work with a PAL N64.

I purchased a Wii to HDMI adapter a few months ago, and long since regretted my purchase. Being a PlayStation man since 1998, I only use non-Sony consoles for exclusive titles. In the case of the Wii, I own three or four games for it. But for the most part, I've been using it for the Virtual Console titles. The adapter works fine with Wii and Gamecube games. But when I try to play Virtual Console games, I completely lose the AV signal.

AdamKoralik The emulation thing doesn't bother me too much, I hear a lot of people have problems with the launch model PS3. For the DOL-001, there are now third party HDMI adapters available (they require the digital port which was removed on the DOL-101 so you have to have the 001). This works on ALL Gamecubes, regardless of region, and all games, including PAL. The Wii does not have any digital outputs on any model. Wii HDMI adapters are converter boxes that convert from component, not a bad option but you do get some analog noise. I've played the PAL version of Metroid Prime (the complete version as opposed to the unfinished/beta US version) on a US Gamecube, with Freeloader, and an HDMI adpater. The HDMI adapters (which are currently custom made) run about $100. Also, some later PAL games do support 480p progressive scan, not all games do though. Most US games support it.

I had a GameCube with component cables stolen from me in 2004 and had to buy another. They were back ordered but I ordered anyway and eventually got it. They never came back in stock, so I was super lucky. As for the difference between the video quality between the GameCube and the Wii, I had (and still have) a Sony XBR910 which had the highest quality of any television ever made (SFP tube), but there is a serious issue with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. With a GameCube, there are strange patterns in the dithered mist and smoke effects in the game. The artifacts are not there when played on the Wii. My pics have been on the 'net for years. Look them up. As for 3rd party cables, Gabe from Penny-Arcade spoke with a Monster Cable engineer or something who talked about the chip in the cable, so it is there. Look it up. As for doubling the resolution, that is not technically correct. The temporal (over time) resolution is the same. 480i forms a 480-line image in two passes where 480p forms a 480-line image in a single pass, but 480p makes half as many passes. I remember testing 1080 Avalanche when I first got the component cables and the squirrel was a blob of perfectly sharp pixels where the squirrel looked like a squirrel with twice the resolution with S-Video. I could see scan lines, but the resulting image appeared to have twice the resolution thanks to temporal resolution and the TV's ability to scale that. I convinced myself that it wasn't true detail and stuck with component, but the difference was drastic.

Outstanding analysis and comparison. When you see a game like Wind Waker through a component cable, it becomes clear that the "HD remake" was completely unnecessary. All people really needed was a better cable for the original system. Nintendo could have easily manufactured more cables to revitalize everyone sold GC games, but that isn't as profitable as simply porting it to a new system and making everyone buy the game again. It may be expensive, but when you consider that this single cable brings so much improved clarity to so many games, it's actually kind of reasonable.

Great informative video! It's such a shame that high quality video standards didn't catch on in North American until HDMI arrived. I've also noticed that the Wii's component video is a little bit sub-par. I don't know if it's just me, but my Wii puts out component that's over saturated and slightly blurry. My s-video modded genesis actually looks better than genesis emulators on my Wii over component. I also think the probelm with 3rd party GC component is because of a DAC integrated into the cables, not a lockout chip. It makes me laugh that it's actually cheaper to get a Wii than it is to just buy a set of component cables for the gamecube.
