As an Osaka person, Osaka is quite different from Tokyo. Osaka is an old civilian city with 1700 years of history. The Buddhist civilization from the continent built Osaka while Samurai warriors in the medieval war period built Tokyo, Tokyo is an arrogant feudal authoritarian Samurai civilization. Therefore the mindset of genuine Osakans is subconsciously a Buddhist civilian mindset while those in Tokyo are often Samurai mindset. If you do a terrible thing in your life you go to hell after you died...Osakans inherited this kind of Buddhist subconscious, also people in Kyoto and Nara are deeply infected with the behaviours of Buddhism even today. That's why they try to behave faithful, nice, kind and friendly. Osakans tend to think behaving like Tokyo, cold sometimes cruel Samurai-minded behaviour is a sin. In reality, Buddhists, Honganji in Osaka revolted against the arrogant authoritarian rule by brutal Samurai of eastern Japan in medieval, this mindset of Osakans is still causing the hatred toward inhumane Samurai behaviour of Tokyo today. Tokyo is too nationalistic and racist. The Buddhist civilization of Osaka-Kyoto-Nara is also profoundly related to Asia and even the middle eastern and Greek civilizations. And Osaka-Kyoto-Nara has the diversity since ancient. Approximately 25% of people are continental ancestors, mostly from the Korean peninsula but generally, Osakans are tolerant of foreigners. Osaka has a culture to welcome foreigners since it originally welcomed Asians settling from the continent in ancient. Homogeneous and nationalistic and disciplined Tokyo often looks just like totalitarians to Osakans and is utterly a strange world for Osakans.

I was in Osaka for the first time last week, very interesting place. things feel natural there, rather than business oriented. Less "Point A to point B" but relaxed. No one's in a rush to catch the train. More facial expressions too even though nearly everyone had a mask on you can get the sense people had smiles on their face in conversations (just my experience/opinion) Actually going back next month too!

I’m a South Asian living in Tokyo. I’m brown. I find it that Japanese people from other parts of Japan like Osaka, Fukuoka are more friendlier and warmer than Japanese people in Tokyo. My friend from Fukuoka actually hugs me when greets me. While my tokyo friend seems kindda cold when greeting. But he’s okay though. We all hangout together on fridays after work until the last train. I hope they don’t become cold hearted salarymen in the future. 😂

I went to Osaka once. I heard all the rumors about Osaka people being friendly. But I always thought it was just a stereotype. That day, 2 strangers approached me and my girlfriend. I know it does not sound like much, but in Tokyo you would be lucky for a stranger who is not selling something to approach you in 5-10 years of living in the city. In a single day in Osaka, it happened twice.

I mostly disagree as an American in Yokohama. Its true more opportunities are in Tokyo for everyone. I used to live in Kobe before moving to Yokohama for work in Tokyo. Kansai people will only be friendly to foreigners if they can speak Japanese. Otherwise, it’s just the awkward, first meeting exchange and both sides will forget each other the next minute. Osaka is a big city with small town feel. Many Kansai-jin have lived in Kansai their whole life. Tokyo area is much better for foreigners like myself and easier to find English friendly services such as medical when our Japanese is limited. Also, I found people in Tokyo more cultured (international living experience), outgoing, and easier to talk to than in Kansai. I’m from LA and being in Tokyo is similar in many ways so I could adjust to big international city life quickly. I understand many Tokyoites aren’t from Tokyo, same as LA. Overall, I recommend Kansai to other fellow foreigners only if they can speak good Japanese.

@@miguellaruku2725 granted this post was just a generalization of the various cities in Japan. I’ve never been to New York City however, I gathered the reputation (from speaking with people personally from there) that such a place would be compared to Tokyo in the sense of the harsh reality of “business first ask questions later” mentality. Now granted not all places are like what I described in the post. Life is relative, it’s conditional, and it’s subjective to circumstances and changes both within us and around us. Not every person from Kobe is apart of the Yamaguchi Gumi crime syndicate. Not every person in Nagoya owns a car etc. However, there are just elements within those places that indicate a certain motif, theme, and sentiment about places that evidently gives each city a very distinct reputation around the world.

The last lady interviewed had a very strong grasp of verbal communication in English: She spoke with verve and a high degree of articulate literacy. Interestingly, she also used a lot of non-verbal communication too. It goes to show how complex language is and even more complex with communication as humans using non-verbal communication as a big part of language! Very impressive to listen to people like that. She even mixed in some idioms, "Off the bat.." and did so "off the cuff", too for example of both forms of communication! I guess that's what this video is trying to find out: How Osaka people interact and communicate differently and what impression that has on people? Rocky was very forward-thinking considering the right environment he would like for his children to grow up in. It changes one's entire perspective of the world, when seeing things in that way! And I agree, I think Japan must be a good country to raise children. I think they have the priorities about right to benefit people even if at times the Japanese might come across as not so easy to approach randomly in public or as strangers in big cities. Pros and cons as always.

So I worked hard by hearing english songs, I watched english series on tv, and of course reading english books. And you know what's funny, my first english series that I watched was law and order. At first I always need subtitles when i watched the series. But then when I improved, I don't even need subtitle anymore. I can just understand everything they talked about in English.

"it is considered inappropriate in Tokyo (to ask directions)". Damn I wasn't aware of this but when I was there 2 weeks ago I had to ask people where I should go several times, like train platforms, small shops hidden in ally ways, etc. The locals seemed super patient and friendly though. Probably was my luck week :)

It is a comedy that the Japanese are being squeezed into a corner by the increasing number of foreigners in Osaka. A friendly city is not necessarily the best for the locals.

I made some of the best memories of my life in the 5 years that I spent living there. The people are warm, friendly funny, just don't piss them off you'll know about it! And we must not forget the Osaka Obachan (animal print fashion forever)! 関西人、日本一。

Interesting that a lot of Westerners are in Tokyo. Western I believe would be very less formal, hence I would think more in Osaka. Every places has differences.

Interesting im from Australia and we have a lot of Asians here. I am going to Osaka in Nov just concerned why so many foreign asian tourists and nationals live in Japan. I prefer visiting a city more Japanese not Vietnam.

oh that's interesting that your friend said that osaka would be a better place to raise a kid. and i'd think that tokyo would have more homeless problem/drug problem since it's a larger, more major city?
