Until WW II German was the first foreign language spoken in Denmark. It was used by the nobility, businesses and the establishment. The Royal family spoke German. This changed after the war to English when anti-German sentiments were particularly high and it wasn’t cool to speak German. King Frederik the Ninth (king from 1947 to 1972) mother was German princess but he married a Swedish princess who spoke Swedish and English. I learned German in school, but only speak it on an A2 -B1 level. However, during the last three decades English has cemented its position as the first foreign language in Denmark. A lot of young people almost speak it on a native level. But German is still taught and many of the older generations speak it very well. Therefore it’s not surprising that this waiter was able to respond in German.

Sometimes we complain in Academia it takes non-native English speakers much more time to read and process a paper than an actual native speaker, but most of them are not even aware (or worse, they refuse to acknowledge) how much easier it is for them due to the fact the the bulk of the literature is in English, most important conferences are in English, and so on and so forth. It is also interesting it seems most of the non-native speakers, in addition to making the effort to learn English, they also find time to learn a third, fourth language.

Speaking as a native English-speaking Londoner...I went to Prague 5 years ago with my partner, his German mum, and our son. We were waiting for service in a restaurant and a couple of French ladies were sitting at the next table. I was vaping and one of those French ladies commented "oh that smells quite nice!" in French and then she waved her hands around to try to explain what she meant. But we all already understood what she meant because we understood French. We then proceeded to chat to them in French. They were the only people I'd met in Prague who didn't speak either Czech or English. I'd spent three months before we went on holiday there learning some basic Czech, and it did come in handy, because not everyone speaks English there. But the waiters in Prague? My God, they're utterly multilingual, and they're smart. When our waiter came to take our order, he spoke to us in French because he'd been listening in to our conversation with the French ladies at the next table. We responded in French but said we were actually English speakers from London. 🤣 And of course, he immediately switched to superb English. I have so much respect for the waiters in central Prague.

But my main goal is to get fluent in German, French and Spanish due to them being the places I’m most likely to visit and after that I might try to learn Russian then Japanese even if I don’t become fluent it would still be amazing to be able to talk to loads of people without using a translator! :D

As a French who, as everyone say we just speak one single language and very bad English when we do speak English, I am quite happy to see in your videos that the English speak ... English ...period, but I knew that having worked in a UK company for more than 20 years and been in the UK almost as much as I lived in France for work, and that lots of EU people do just speak ... their mother language and a little bit of English (including the Nordics that are definitely not as good as the myth says) ... and those who say they speak more than two languages ... most often know in fact two at best not mentioning the Americans that only speak ... bad English ... 🤣😘And your video conclusion is quite good ... two French (particularly the girl) speaking almost perfect English ... You've made my day. Thanks 🤣🙏
