I’ve known a lot of women to drop their phones in the toilet. Actually way more than men I know of. It usually stems from the phone in the back pocket of their jeans. Women’s jeans are notorious for having much shallower pockets. If they don’t remember to remove the phone before using the toilet, as they turn to sit down, plop goes the phone.
@RyuuTenno5 жыл бұрын
All the girls I know who've dropped their phones were actively using them. I've literally never heard of a guy dropping it in. However I did launch my phone into the side of mine, breaking the glass (still 100% functional after), cause I set it on the counter when opening my medicine cabinet, so, when I went to grab it, I missed, and hit the side, and sent it flying. I'm very lucky it never went in too.

Could you do a video on the idea of cars being “driverless” and how even today you can find people sleeping behind the wheel of these cars while computer handles the logistics of making from place to place. Because like this video where waterproof doesn’t totally mean waterproof, I don’t think driverless cars really mean driverless, but try telling that to those people who fall asleep behind the wheel of one of those cars and wake up dead. Thanks again for such a great channel with wonderful content and for the time you and your researchers put into every video. Take care and keep up the fine work.

It's also technically against the law in all fifty states to be unconscious while in the drivers seat with the vehicle in motion and that in addition just like the senior airline pilot is responsible for whatever happens when flying even when the plane is on autopilot; so is the person in a driver's seat when they engage auto drive on their Tesla.

Driverless doesn't mean driverless, YET. But it will, as auto drive functions continue to get more popular they will function more effectively as it's easier for a computer to predict what a computer will do rather then trying to predict a human. As I've shared before, I worked in this industry for a very long time. I wasn't the guy writing any of the "waterproof" ads, but I felt needlessly compelled to have frequent, intelligent conversations with clients about the murkey-grey scale of water resistance and what that means in real life scenarios. I gave up on these conversations when I realised no one was actually listening to the facts, they were blindly (and deafly) pursuing the ad-men's words. I finally resorted to telling them they could trust their devices in most scenarios, but they shouldn't act like Kanye West and treat this as a licence to pour Champaign all over their $1,000 pride and joy. Nice try, but I'm absolutely confident no one will see this and choose to take proper care of their technology as a result. Regardless, great video! Good work Simon and team.

12:43 It's nice to be able to remove the batteries if one needs to. That feature should come back. . Phones could use watch waterproof ratings. Most digital watches can manage moderately being wet. They rate their water resistance to how deep underwater they can go with many saying 100 meters or 200 meters. Though I understand the actual rating for many of these can be expected to be a notch less than stated. Not sure how well it handles the sea but my casio 200meter rated watch handled a few swims in chlorinated pools and many showers with it on. There is also the factor that while you might be able to have the watch at a certain depth, you might not want to press the buttons at those depths. Using the buttons in the shower wasn't ever a problem, I don't remember if I did so at the pool.

I had my iPhone 4s waterproofed by a company called liquipel. Back in 2011 when it came out the company had a service where you could send them your phone, they would treat it with a super hydrophobic nano coating that becomes part of the device. They treated it in the vacuum chamber so the nano coating would presumably be drawn into any crevice that water could also be drawn into, therefore making the device waterproof. When I received my phone back they also sent me a Kleenex that had been treated with the same nano technology. I could run it under water and the water would just roll right off. If I tried to soak up water with it it would just lay on top of it. I could put that iPhone 4s under water with no issue and run it under the sink to easily clean it off. It was also a great party trick. The only reason I replaced that phone was because It fell out of my pocket one night well out bar hopping. From my most recent search on their website they no longer offer the service, only screen protectors and cases. The last article I could find on the technology with a very short search was a world wide licensing deal they made in 2013. I did more digging and found a very short blog posted in 2018 of a review of the nano coating. After that news of the technology seems to have disappeared. Although there is one other website out there still that mysteriously still had an order now button, however I didn’t try clicking on it. I google searched “what happened to liquipel watersafe service” and I only got 10 results...seems a bit sketchy. It kind of makes you wonder if some big company bought the technology off of them for a bunch of money and then buried the technology for one reason or another. Maybe Simon’s team can do more digging? Have I waffled on to be enough of a legend?

The phone companies are at a bit of dodgy wordplay: The word ‘proof’ as a suffix for something, e.g. bulletproof, originated with standard objective practices for literally proving something. In the case of alcohol, the practice was dousing a bit black-powder with the liquid in question; If the powder still ignited, then the liquid was 100 proof (50% alcohol) at least. Proof. In the case of bullets, an armor-maker would fire a musket at the finished armor, leaving a small dent (instead of a hole) called the ‘bullet proof’. Again, proof. Now, the word waterproof ought to mean “impervious to water”, or thereabouts. But the phone companies mean that they have their own objective practice for reaching their ‘proof’.

As someone who repair phones, often board level repairs caused by water damage... Dropping your phone in the toilet is often gonna cause that. Not because of the water alone, but because the hard impact with "the bowl" will crack or shift something, so the water has a way in. Once the seal around the screen or rear has a breach, moisture can get in. But also dust and debree. Then that dust and debree get on the mating surfaces and butyle rubber seals, mechanically keeping it from closing properly and maling the seal non-sticky. Then more gets in, seals deteriorate further etc. So if you have an accident with your phone, and water ingress protection is importsnt to you - even if both screen and rear is intact, take it to a well reputed repair shop and ask them to replace the seals. Tell them why, so they know to ensure proper sealing gaskets are used. It means you've already opened the phone, so consider getting a new battery once it's already open anyway, if it's more than a year old. As you've paid for 90% of the work, and new seals, already. If this happens with a Samsung, Sony or Huawei, the equation changes a bit because of how they're put together and how service parts come from the manufacturers. If you crack the screen, or even just the glass around it, very few shops will repair that, and a new screen comes with the full "frame" and a new battery. Then the rear glass plate and the parts inside (logic board, cameras, buttons etc) are transplanted into the new housing. So repairing a broken screen for a Samsung, Huawei, Sony etc can be more expensive than for most iPhones. But in turn, you do get almost an entire new phone.

I never actually submersed it ever, but the red thing on the battery clearly indicates "water" and the battery compartment is full of dust. It did last until I had to change carriers, at least 5 years carried with no case. Still works fine...

It isn't just the holes in the case, it is the seals as well, around the screen etc. They are very fine and also the pressure in water quickly builds to levels that such fine seals can't cope with. The IP69 rating is more for industrial equipment, we used to supply terminals for food production, they were IP69 rated (we tried to get IP68, but it worked fine in our tests, but at the official testing labs, water broke into the case, it turned out our test chamber was 1.5cm shallower - 198.5cm as opposed to 200cm - as the official test, our terminal could cope with 24 hours in our chamber without any problems, in the official chamber, 1.5cm deeper, it failed within 30 minutes). At the end of each shift, the equipment in a food production hall has to be cleaned using high pressure water jets and chemical agents, often high temperature as well, sometimes steam. That high pressure is hell on the seals between different parts of the casing and can quickly let water in in most circumstances. Pumping 10 bar of water directly onto a seal isn't healthy for that seal.

The "Gap" around the screen is a major NONISSUE. The adhesive that is used is water-resistant... and it's a strip all the way around the device. The charge port - in phones designed to be submerged, is actually a separate PCB that is housed in a special chamber designed to not let water through. This is usually done by having passthroughs for connections that are insulated with some sort of gasket. This makes it where not only is your phone more water-resistant, but also more easily maintenanced because a failure of the charge port doesn't warrant the entire motherboard being changed (which in a phone generally means the SOC gets switched out as well because the chip is soldered to the board)

Scruffs GTX BOOT. Totally waterproof. Ive used them for 2 years and never had a wet feet. They're Goretex.

Agreed. There are waterproof boots... that Coming from someone who worked outdoors in the Pacific Northwest for 20 years. You've figured this out, but for others reading...people need to read the specs and fine writing on the labels before taking any boot that says "waterproof" , even if it's a good brand. Then of course there are the fun folks who complain that they got fleeced by a company selling crap when they paid for good waterproof ankle high boots. But I look at them, the bottom of their jeans are soaking wet and tucked into the boots. It's all I can do to nicely say 'just a thought but, your boots aren't the problem'.

Wellies would be what dairy farmers or ranchers use in the cow shit. They are called muck boots. The cheap ones you get at Walmart are good as long as you are not doing a lot of walking. However they do make some that are very comfortable and can be worn in the cold. The only downfall for all of them is one nail hole or puncture wrecks them.

I dropped my phone in a porter potty at a concert... I got a new phone the next day... lol wait was the fault of my jacket and the fact that I was pretty intoxicated. I am also the most clumsy person ever.... HAHA

We have klim here in the USA. They make 100% legit waterproof boots. Their showroom has a boot in a fishtank, just sitting there. It's pretty cool.

I bought a phone especially engineered to be extra tough because I'm really hard on phones. (a Moto Force) My phone says that it is water resistant up to 6 feet. It has certainly survived spills and tons of rain as I ride a motorcycle and it's gotten plenty damp / wet in poor weather. It was dropped in a bath once. Luckily it's not been damaged but I wouldn't tempt fate by testing it's limits. I think I bought a special warrantee with it, but water damage it actually covered.

I use my old CAT phone as an under water camera for snorkeling, works perfectly fine up to the 5 meters the IP and other certifications tell and up to one hour. Also shared Simon's fate on my IPhone 3GS back in the day.

My mama once dropped her phone down the toilet whilst she was trying to clean it (the toilet) at work one day. Came home, took it apart, and baked it in the oven. Worked a charm. It was also a Cricket so quite sturdy. And yes, women are actually more likely to drop phones in toilets, at least in my opinion. Not only do we have fewer pockets, they tend to be hella shallow, and most of the time the only pocket that's big enough for a phone is your back pocket. Which is closer to a toilet. Edit: Instead of taking your phone *in* the shower Simon, just put it on the sink counter and crank up the volume. Or get one of those bluetooth speakers, put it on the sink counter, and crank up the volume. I do the former when I want to listen to music whilst I shower as I don't posses the latter.

I had one of those military grade phones for awhile. Use to drop it into horse watering troughs twice a week bc I'm stupid and it was perfectly fine. Wouldnt want to do that with my current phone

Samsung note 9 is great with water. I watch youtube (often your show) in the morning in the shower every day. Phone always gets soaked and works great.

The Cat S61 is advertised as IP69K rated. Protected against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray downs. But it is an industrial phone what weighs two and a half times as much as an Iphone.

I dropped my left AirPod into the toilet, it’s in my ear right now and working. I also dropped my AirPod case into my freshly brewed cup of coffee which I had been far more hesitant to fish out than immediately shoving my arm into the toilet for the sacred AirPod. Neither suffered any damage except for the retrospective of having absolutely zero hesitation to jam my hand into a toilet to rescue a piece of plastic while simultaneously the concept of dumping a hot cup of fresh coffee to rescue the case was incredibly difficult

Yes not the name wellies but the same style. They do sell water resistant smart phone bags that are heavy duty zip lock style bags but stay away from the ones with the headphone Jack as that is where they tend to leak most often. And my purchase of a phone requires a removable battery so that I can swap out batteries easily plus it's harder to track the phone with the main battery out all newer electronic devices contain a small internal battery to maintain the clock and other background angry pixie ( electrical )sucking applications running for a set time
