Good analysis! There are so much more variants of increasing speed, partly also depending on the athlete, that a pulley wheel optimization is negligible. For instance the weather conditions, roadsurface, but one of my most favourite is how long can you ride in the most aero position whilst maintaing optimal power through the pedals? Sitting upright, flat or anything in between literally saves miles per hour. The other thing is "what is thé function of a derailleur?": guiding the chain! Optimizing low frixtion in the gearing is a better way to increase speed and endurance 😀

The real gains come from the fact that OSPW's look cool. If your bike looks cool, you'll want to ride it more often, and the more you ride, the more fitness you'll eventually build overtime, which is precisely why you should shell out $600 for a CeramicSpeed OSPW. 😜

Literally, putting your sunglasses OVER your helmet straps instead of under them confers a more significant gain than ceramic bearings (and yes, that’s been verified in a wind tunnel). Other things that have more benefit… shaving your arms and legs… 14x more benefit than oversized pulleys, tailoring your jerseys to get rid of the wind flapping on the shoulders, a helmet with fewer vents (which are ironically less expensive helmets).

There are other factors: 1) potentially bigger frontal area, so more drag. 2) weight differences, if the wheels are bigger are they heavier? Appreciate that both of these factors will be negligible..., but as the benefits also seem to be negligible it would be interesting to see if they negate any benefits! PS: changing the chain tension might give you less drag, but it will also disrupt how well you shift gears!

Thank you, I actually had a section of the video talking about the aerodynamic penalty but I felt like it was too much for this video. SLF motion has an aero cage, and when I talked with the owner of SLF he told me that it saves 0.4 watts over the standard Dura-Ace cage. I think the aero penalty is the reason we don't see more of these oversized systems at the individual time trial world championship.

Wow, that is so cool! I had a look at the SLF motion hyper aero model. It’s a bit pricy for my mediocre triathlon sprint times, but I guess if your elite, and marginal gains can mean 1st or 2nd, that it would make sense.

The biggest factors I want from jockey wheels is shifting ease, precision and smoothness. Some of those aluminum wheels cause all sorts of clunky and rattling effects. I don't think Shimano and Campagnolo design their factory wheels at a compromise. Weight weenies, watt weenies... all the same. Nobody will consistently gain 12 to 22 seconds over a 70 mile course simply because of friction gains or losses in their jockey wheels. The variables of physical form and fitness are hugely, vastly more responsible for performance output. So focus on reliable shifting and on riding better. Don't do the math, do the work you weenies.

Go watch Hambini and Peak Torque, then reconsider. Absolute Black were an alright brand for making your bike look slightly better but the price/quality ratio has always been abysmal. The OSPW fiasco blew it out of the park, they keep making wild claims about their performance and justifying the $700 price tag and all they have to back up their claims is "just trust me bro". One thing I can give them credit for is making a plastic derailleur cage, which I believe is what muffles the drivetrain sounds.

It's common in the Shimano pulley for the metal covers that sandwich the bushing to rub. This results in the friction seen in the video. The fact you can still spin them with your little finger, gives you an idea of how much energy you are actually wasting. It's negligible. When you spin a jockey wheel, we believe it correlates to the wheel spinning. I also "upgraded" my pulley to ceramic and they spin freely. Makes no difference in every day cycling

The "reduce chain angle" part is wrong. bigger pulley can reduce "Each link's bending angle", but mean while needs to bend more joints because of less angle also bigger pulley. So the total energy is on how much angle each link need to turn in the full cycle. So over all I think it's the same energy, or even the oversized will take more watts because it let the chain change more angle.

I won't argue that the difference is huge, but you missed that the number of completed rotations of the derailleur is reduced if it is oversized, which will reduce the amount of lost energy. This will probably bring the power saving closer to 3W than 1.76W.

@EricAbbottTri
@EricAbbottTri 3 жыл бұрын
I have not heard anyone bring up the weight issue actually. Generally the oversized systems are a combination of carbon and plastic so it's weight is minimal, same goes for the chain. However, that is another variable to this question.
@edmundscycles1
@edmundscycles1 2 жыл бұрын
Add aero drag too . Significantly larger side profile for of bore wind and larger frontal form . Longer chain ect all add up and nullify any advantage . Also it adds more friction on a multi geared system as the side plates are more likely to rub if it is not dead in line with the chain rings . Having less tension decreases power input to the wheel as the chain has more "takeup " before fully engaging with the cassette teeth . (Think a track bike with a slack chain and how much power is lost before the wheel spins . )

I think. For the average joe who doesnt race but goes on club runs - totally not worth it unless they have money burning a hole in their pocket. But I think moving from the cheap pulley with the ferrule bearing to a wheel with a proper bearing would be a good step forward and some dont even need to cost the earth. Im currently overhauling two of my bikes. My commuter is running a 105 5700 and my _'go faster'_ bike is on an old 6800 Ultegra - All with the stock OEM jockey wheels. The commuter is getting a really cheap BBB Roller Boys BDP-02 that doesnt even cost me $12. The 6800 is getting a BDP-22 which cost me $43. I could have gone OEM but i did a lot of digging through reviews and even the $12 jockey set should be better than the OEM ultegra set according to reviews. $12 is cheap enough for me not to care too much if they offer little to no difference to the OEM 5700 Jockey wheels. -- it sounds dumb but im pretty excited to see if i'll feel any difference between the old and new jockey wheels. owned both bikes about 5-6years

@@EricAbbottTri - Oh no. I do that in T1 and then wash it all off in T2. ;) I think the how much does it spin in your hand is a bit misleading. When I tried to race on a fidget spinner in 2020 I failed miserably. I think the tricky part is how efficient/durable the bearings are under load not how long will it spin. You could probably test this by stripping out the bearing lubricant.

What gains you get from drive chain efficiency, you lose in aero deficiency.

They look cool though. And you can get chinese brand carbon pulleys with ceramic bearings for 50 bucks. But they name brand ones are ridiculously overpriced imo.

I don't care what others think I would never do it for the wattage...lol I did it for the cosmetics...I should be heckled it's true but fast is first but it's gotta look good to me or it's not mine...I have never down graded for esthetics but I have not upgraded to my wallets potential to have a cohesive look...

I also heard the oversize jockey wheel creates more aerodynamic drag which nullifies the benefits. Lol

Yup, heard that as well. This is why I am getting the new aero system from SLF Motion.

1 watt on jockey, 4 watts BB, 2 watts narrow bars, 4 watts aero frame, 1watt aero sock, etc.. 10 watts at least if it matters to you as an athlete. And dont' athletes measure their performance in seconds?? But moreover, it saves you the doubt that you wonder, is it my bike or me... IF,,, if you eliminate the bike as a factor, then it really helps YOU, as the athlete to know that YOU must perform better when all else is addressed.

"Literally" - I don't think that word means what you think it means. The data says they're a waste of money and pays for the marketing. If you can afford them because you like how they look then fine, just don't tell other people you bought them to save watts.

Ok you save 1.76watts but you probably lose 2 watts from aero disadvantage of that huge pulley!
@EricAbbottTri
@EricAbbottTri 3 жыл бұрын
Yup that is a common point. That is why SLF motion has made an aero system that supposedly is a fraction of a watt faster than the standard cage.
