Are Paul Rubens new acrylics worth all the hype they are getting? I was asked to 24 review a set of 24 and at first I told then I was not interested. They responded telling me a bit more about the product so I got curious and decided to try them out. I thought they would be a cheap, transparent craft paints that would not be lightfast but I can tell you after trying them out that I was wrong! In this weeks video I swatch them out, do a 4 brand comparison between Golden, Utrecht, System3, and Paul Rubens and I do 2 paintings in my small sketchbook with them. The results really surprised me!

Ooo oo oo I really like the two paintings you did with the Rubens also. Interesting that they are so matte, but not advertised as gouache.

Thank you! I’m so glad you liked the paintings. The paints are definitely more acrylic in nature than gouache. Not quite as flat as gouache.

This is your first video that I’ve watched. I found it interesting, intriguing, and well done. Despite your health issues, you got yourself going and knew that it would help you in the long run, and I’m certain that it helped everyone who’s watched it and didn’t become petty in their response. I know you got me interested in that brand of acrylic paint. I don’t like particularly shiny results myself, so that was a great thing to learn before spending any money. I’ll be back!

Enjoyed every minute!!! Praying for your health to improve. I have been suffering with allergies really bad for months. I have them all year round. I have been having digestive problems, chronic gerd, and diverticulosis problems along with arthritis. I know how you feel sister. ❤ Great review of the products. My bird, a cockatiel Buttercup, she is yellow enjoyed your video also. So happy you made it to the studio to create for us. A big thank you. 😊 You made my Friday. Have a wonderful weekend. I am about to work on some sketching figures and landscape from some of my reference books. God bless you. I feel closer to you watching you every week than I do some of my siblings. We are not very close at all. We have nothing in common. No one works in any art mediums but me. Oh well their loss. They both have a lot of health issues too. See you in the next video. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙏🙏🙏🙏🎨🎨🎨🎨

Life is complex and hard in seasons. I don’t understand why people let petty things disturb them. Or maybe the more compassionate response is, it’s easy to let small things attack our peace when we’re in difficult seasons. Anyhoo, this was a fun video and good to see these paints in action. I generally like Paul Ruben products.

Absolutely true, as a sensitive person going through a rough patch I am definitely more easily bruised these days. The only Paul Rubens I had tried were the pastels and they were a bad (or knock off) set.. So I said no when asked to try the acrylics, I’m so glad they talked me into it. I hope they will offer open stock for replacing colors because I like them.

Well I don't work in acrylic but I'm a compulsive art supplies hoarder, and generally I would by golden or liquitex, but I do love paul rubens and they were so cheap I had to have them. I like flat pigments too.

During the first swatching of all the colours you were definitely less chatty than usual. Other than that good for you on getting a video out while feeling so bad. These paints are going on my list. I have a set of Amsterdam acrylics but they are shiny and I don't use them that much. And as for the vicious comment, I don't know whether to laugh or cry that there are people who make such a point about the right way to do things. I'm just muck around and have fun, like you do. It's so pointless to get wound up about paint. So here's to the best of dishonoring of paint 🥂 we do it well! Have a better week dear, big hugs 🥰

What happened to your silk painting? Have you reached a stopping point? Are you tired of them? Where do you get your scarves from? I get mine from Dharma, but I'm unsure of the true quality. If you also use Dharma do you have misgivings like I have? Have you done any silk/wool blend scarves and, if yes, did you use DuPont Silk Dyes? I think I remember you using Alter Ego Dyes by DuPont...but have you painted the silk/wool blend from Dharma?

I stopped painting silk a few years ago because of health issues and the toxic nature of the dyes and the steaming process. I used to purchase my silk scarves from Exotic Silks. I never used silk/wool blend.

I love your videos even if you filmed them with a cracked low light lite bulb! sometimes its easy for us to forget the people on youtube owe us nothing. I thank you. Can I suggest you look into CBD oils for your pain. Thank you again and sending you lots of healing light and art hugs.

That’s such a good point that you bring up, viewers often do you think that content producers owe them a certain kind/level of content. It’s a strange phenomenon. Thanks for the reminder about CBD oil! I ran out a while back and my pain was pretty good at that point so I didn’t purchase more. Thanks to your reminder I’m going to grab another bottle. Thanks so much for the healing light and heart hugs. I really appreciate it!

Question if you added Matt, medium to the golden paints or shiny paints, does that turn them into flat pants like wash? Does it change the colour or the consistency?

Hi Jess, I noticed sometimes you’re asking me the same questions multiple times, so I wonder if you’re reading all of my responses? I will answer this one again here, but I did answer it when you asked it before. No, matte medium does not make acrylics flat like gouache.

Hi Linda, I always appreciate your calming videos ... and I just wondered your thoughts... as a viewer and someone who wants to support good content, certainly by taking the time to thumbs up and comment... there are those who post videos that honestly, are not paying attention to what might "trigger" a viewer".. for instance.. I watch a particular content creator who had grown out her fingernails so long they looked like they would crack off. It literally made me very uncomfortable, and as well, I couldn't tell what was going on with her voice, it felt so condescending. Is it wrong for those who want to support good content to let them know that they are actually being inconsiderate by taking up our time, even though the subject might be of interest? Why should content creators think they are "above" any kind of suggestion that they might want to re-consider how they are presenting themselves. Your videos are always thoughtful and your voice is calming. But there are some content creators that don't pay any attention to how their voice sounds or how uncomfortable it might be to watch. If it is worth the time to create a video, it should be worth doing well and just not "slap" stuff out there. You can tell the difference between someone who might have a suggestion as to how someone might improve and someone who just wants to be unkind and nasty. I have always appreciated the thoughtfulness and effort you put into your videos.

This is such a complex question but my short answer is that as viewers (myself included) it is not our place to try and modify the behavior of someone offering free content to the public. As someone who is a trauma survivor myself, I have learned after many years of therapy that my triggers are my own and I can’t put them on someone else. If someone’s videos are triggering me then as an act of self care it is in my best interest not watch their videos. It is up to me to find a channel that is more suited to my specific needs. Content creators are creating videos that take massive amounts of time, energy and expense to produce each week. They are creating for a very wide audience and I believe it is up to each viewer individually to decide what continent is right for them. If someone’s content doesn’t feel right for you, or is triggering you, then please don’t keep trying to watch it. You don’t need that kind of stress. Other people however might like that type of content so we shouldn’t try to get the creator to alter their style. There is such a wide variety of personalities within the KZbin audience, many millions of viewers and creators. There’s usually a perfect fit between viewer and creator if you dig deep enough. If on the other hand someone is producing content that is truly harmful to an individual or a group of individuals then I would not confront the creator of that content directly but I would report it to KZbin. It’s late and I’m typing this on my tiny phone screen so I hope it makes sense. Take care and watch things that make you feel at ease! 😘💝😊

@@BeginnersMind-ArtMind That is a very kind and measured response on your part. While I don't agree with all of what you say, most of it makes sense and seems to be the way culture is right now.. @@impish22 I appreciate you entering into a conversation that may or may not be a difficult one for you. I also appreciate your open mindedness and desire to understand a different view. One of the hardest things for me to learn once I started trauma therapy was that it’s not up to me to judge or grade other people. I grew up in a very judgmental and abusive environment so learning non-judgment was extremely difficult for me and it’s some thing I will be working on the rest of my life. Everyone is on their own journey and whether we believe it or not people are generally doing the best they can with the tools and knowledge they have at the moment. (That can still be a hard for me to remember) There are plenty of viewers out there that think my videos are awful and they’re not afraid to tell me that with harsh comments. I have an incredibly small audience compared to many KZbinrs. But, for the small subset of the population that I create for these videos are a blessing. Gwen put it well it her comment below saying that “Viewers often forget that content creators don’t owe them anything.” There is definitely a sense of entitlement in the negative comments that I receive from a very small number of viewers. I don’t think those people are able to understand how much hard work goes into the videos and how often chronic illness makes putting them together extremely difficult. They tend to have trouble with empathy and compassion. On the other end of the spectrum, the positive comments seem to be more about giving back and developing a reciprocal sense of supporting each other. When that happens I feel that real connections are made and healing takes place. Thanks for opening up an interesting and important conversation.
