I think the question is, does it matter? the amount of people trying to "expose" them just because they threaten a culture which is quite obviously simple to integrate into, is ridiculous. Must be a UK thing but maybe we just appreciate music no matter where it comes from on our small island
@oddiethefox5832 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you here. Funny thing is, most people's favorite artists are consistently using ghost writers and aren't writing their own songs anyway. In their behind the scenes videos, Pete and Bas have said their grandchildren got them into drill and they help them with slang. They didn't even like drill at first but kept listening to it and they love it now. So, if you take their personal account of the situation, they admit to their grandchildren helping them write. BUT WHO CARES! I just agree with you so much. They might not write every single word, but their delivery and style is so unique. They can obviously represent the culture as well and many seem to agree since they're blowing up!

I think you're definitely right about the UK being more accepting of other cultures. Throughout history we've been a melting pot of cultures (forced or not, for better or worse) and what we call appreciation or respect, Americans mainly call 'cultural appropriation' which on the whole is a toxic concept in itself. I've had white friends with dreads in the 90s. If they didn't have respect for the culture would they represent a part of it? British pop music has always shown appreciation and respect to other genres. Look at the Police or Culture Club in the 80s with their love of reggae or Madness and UB40 of ska and reggae etc. There are so many more examples and I'm not saying we were the only ones, but there was never the argument of 'they're stealing so and sos music' there was just acceptance and respect. Man, I never thought I'd get preachy on a Pete and Bas video lol

I'm lived in London a lot of years and met many old geezers like Pete and Bas, They are authentic in many ways and probably embellish a bit, but there's a real love of language in their generation and doesn't seem too much of a stretch that it translates into rap, there's a rhythm to how they speak that is a reflection of the old London street slang that's sadly dying out. And yes, they probably did some shady things along the way.

Considering these guys took 5-10 years to perfect their craft, it feels legit. Yeah, there are people who've rapped their whole lives that are worse than them, but there are also gifted people who take off after rapping for 2 years. Talent and dedication matter. Just for context, much of what they're saying as a "backstory" was not uncommon back in the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. Bare-knuckle boxing is still big in the UK underground working class communities but back in those days it was huge. Again, being involved with stolen cars (back then cars were much easier to steal and chop, they were high value and they were much less traceable - you only need to look into how huge Scotland Yard's "Flying Squad" became in that era to understand how common this sort of crime was and, also, how involved top level police officers often were themselves) and criminality whilst working as a Postman was also pretty common back in the 70s. In fact, there were numerous rackets which were discovered being operated through the sorting offices of the Postal service so none of this is entirely unbelievable. Also, to say a working class guy from South London had connections to the Richardsons back in the 60s was not uncommon - in fact, back then, if you were in South London, in those communities and you were even a little bit off the straight and narrow then the Richardsons probably would have known you. How close that connection was is debatable but, I would say, there are a few people still around with documented involvement with the Richardsons (not to mention Eddie Richardson himself) and, as far as I'm aware, nobody has called Pete out on that yet (although it's very possible they've not been made aware of his claims. Eddie has no problem, even at his old age, calling people out when they try and come out with stuff about his family that isn't true though). What I would say is Pete & Bas being some what vague and not wanting to talk about that stuff is just how ALL those guys used to be. They never had the need, nor ability, to brag on Social Media about EVERYTHING that they were getting up to and so the way Pete & Bas handle those sorts of questions about "their life" is exactly how I would expect people from their era to be. It isn't so much about what they are saying, or not saying, it is about what people who ARE from that life are not saying about them. Until someone like Eddie Richardson comes forward and says Pete & Bas are total phonies I give them the benefit of the doubt, whilst also being fully aware that everyone embellishes a little bit and memories often differ slightly.

@matthewwalker5430 If that wasn't the truth, I don't know what is! Preach brother! I'm 58 and from South London. Battersea - SW. But you know how South Londoners travelled everywhere, so I was regularly in SE. Peckham, Walworth, Elephant, Rotherhithe, Bermondsey, and the rest. When it came to gangsters, there was only one family to talk about. The rest couldn't even pretend! Cut out the new slang out of their songs, and we're left with what's been happening on the wrong side of the law for the past century. The products might have upgraded, but the process is the same. Make sense that they got good after 5 years. Its super common for people to get good after a couple years, hence why most rappers come out the gate at 17-19. Wasn't snoop 19 when he recorded his first song with Dre? Plus Bas is a musician makes sense that he knows how structure writing and know what sounds good. If they have help writing meh. Didn't stop me from listening to NWA or any of Dre's albums. And their stories seem genuine. Bas sounds like my late grandpa. Gotta remember they had a full life so they did a lot. I personally think that YES obviously there's an entertainment factor, they seem like smart men, but that doesn't mean they aren't truthful. They understand how entertaining it can be, but It's not staged, it's authentic, but again; there IS the entertainment factor, think about how a LOT of rappers exaggerate/paraphrase to make things more interesting, again; music whether you like it or not, is ENTERTAINMENT. The fact they blend a bit of comedy, seriousness, and fun together should be evident of it just being for the love of the music. I believe them personally, I think it's irresponsible to just assume something is fake when you see how much money and hard work is being put into it. Props to the old timers for keeping it real during the difficult times these past years. You should check out some of the songs with the other old dudes they collab with, those are usually more comedy oriented, think of the songs where Pete and Bas are alone as their more serious music (the other guys too, Norman Pain is a REAL one tbh). Then with the other guys, like The Northern Boys or The Snooker Team (If I recall Norman Pain is in both), etc. Those are more funny than serious, and honestly it'll be a good reaction for the stream, for a bit more comedy involved. Norman Pain has some crazy gritty songs, dude definitely has suffered in life and knows how to show it. Imho my favorite songs Norman Pain has put out so far are "F*ck" and "Pain & Strife" check them out sometime. Alternatively they have a collab together, "Pete & Bas - Golf ft. Norman Pain"
@matthewwalker5430 Жыл бұрын
I would also say that, in the UK at least, we have a natural affinity toward the English language, witticisms and rhyme. In London, where Pet and Bas are from, we have a form of slang that is pushing 200 years old (maybe older) called "Rhyming Slang" or "Cockney rhyming slang" and many people in the UK speak it so fluently we don't even realise when we are using it. For people of their generation in particular they use a LOT of rhyming slang and, funnily enough, rhyming slang and Hip-Hop do fit together quite well. I think Pete & Bas almost certainly write their own lyrics when they're using classic Cockney slang, I mean they speak it in their common discourse anyway, but when their lyrics contain more modern slang they've probably had a little help with that. Not sure how much that really matters in the end though.

Writing lyrics is a mental challenge, not physical, so i don't know why people find it so unbelievable that they could put together these bars. Their flow alone is impeccable, and you can tell they are comfortable behind the mic. My take is they seem pretty honest when it comes to their writing process and if you go through their work chronologically you can see their progression and its consistent with someone developing skill in a craft through practice and that would be pretty hard to fake imo. As far as their backgrounds I think they're dodgy but in the "old dudes telling stories" sort of way where you're never gonna know for sure what's exaggerated and what's not and I really don't think it matters. The only thing I wish they could have answered is my understanding is that 2 of Pete's grandkids are "producers/engineers" (not sure what the correct terminology is) for 91SHOTS and do their beats but I haven't been able to truely confirm that

The reason why you keep being so skeptical is your LATE to them,They probably get help here and there,truthfully alot of rappers do,of course they not going to be up on current references like yung dudes BUT they also spit alot of old uk references that its hard for others to write for them,also its hard to take OTHER peoplez writing structure and FLOW like they do,especially the switch ups and transitions so i think they write most of it just get editing tips to make it sound current,no matter they still two of the best technical rappers that ever lived

I enjoy their story, but its truthfulness is not important to me because their work transcends any story. They are artists, pure and simple. Their lyrics are 2, 3 even 4 deep, there's no one else writing that well. IMO

I love watching magic tricks yet I still am very curious about how it is ACTUALLY done. Personally I don’t think Pete and Bas are artists so much as they are the artwork itself. That doesn’t make it less impressive. I don’t think the artist’s behind the project and Frank and Maury, (and possibly Norther Boys) are going for a cash grab so much as they are playing with social media as an art medium. Think of the band Gorillaz. They created an entire animated band with backstory that the actual artists play behind. GWAR did it to cartoonish proportions. Look at comedian Andy Kauffman.

late to the party here, but listening to the history of events they spout in the song golf, they're a little too accurate for it to be fake,.... the only way they could get that kind of detail, is either they lived through it themselves, or they went out and interviewed the people who lived through it,...

Look at the size of the fists on Bas, and his nose, bare Knuckle boxer shouldn't be surprising.

The insecurities of aspiring rappers on full display with the shrinkage. I’ve seen so many Pete & Bas reaction videos. So many times they start by laughing, then cling to denial and disbelief, even looking pissed, but eventually they all have to admit it’s fire. After facing the reality that P&B can drill better than everyone, they try to shoot ‘em down by claiming they have ghost writers or that they’re still a novelty/gimmick. Just accept that they are legit and even if you get another 50 years you’ll never spit like them.

😅 if someone does write for them, no other rappers with ghost writers can deliver like they do. I think they do wrote their own stuff.

Catching up 4 months late, do more reactions. I'd love to know what it would take to get Tech N9ne & Kriss Kaliko to cross the sea to F with these two and I feel like you are one of the only persons capable of making that happen. Let's see some Worldwide Choppers - Geriatric Edition!
