Bought a set of the Beryllium Copper Eye 2's for my 40th birthday in 1991 and still playing them today. I wish my swing was as good as the clubs. Still love them.

I currently play the ping eye 2's. The feel and the loft on the irons are fantastic. they are also very forgiving. They lack a little distance but you can easily compensate by closing the club face, or going 1 bigger club.

I'd love to see these tested side by side with Callaway Apex CF16. In my opinion over the years, the biggest change in iron technology would have to be the new face cup. I feel like the majority of changes since the Eye2 have just been toying with weight placement. Great video, great idea. Keep up the good work. Personally I started the game with a senior set of Northwestern clubs. Moved to hand me down big bertha irons, then used cally x20's. Today I play the 2014 model of forged Callaway Apex and I have to say they are my favorite for very obvious reasons (First fitted, first forged, first higher end set of clubs)

Not a long time golfer per se, but I inherited my eye 2s from my dad a couple years ago. Still using them, and they are by no means a bottleneck to my game. Great clubs! I've thought about grabbing something like a set of Mizuno JPX EZ but I can never find a reason to pull the trigger because they are so good. My only complaint (not the club's fault) is that it kinda bothers me that I go straight from gap wedge to 9 iron because the eye 2 pitching wedge is almost the same loft as my current gap wedge.

Great concept Randy...I played from 1990 until 2008 with a set of the Eye2's in steel (beryllium/copper where too expensive). I've only been playing for about two and a half years, so my current irons are the first and only set I ever owned. I bought them used, though, and they are about 10 years old, I think. They are MacGregor VFoil M455, they look like Hagrid's gardening tools, to be honest, but they are ridiculously easy to hit. And they are actually forged, which is rare for a game improvement iron, so they feel really nice when you hit them out of the middle. When I bought them, I promised myself that I would only play them until I could afford something better, but now I don't really feel the urge to change them. As for irons to test against the Ping Eye 2s, I'd say Callaway Steelhead XR and Srixon Z355.

The Ping Eye 2 Red Dot you kept showing at the beginning is the infamous Ping Eye 2 Plus No Plus. Only manufactured for about 8 months. It was the non conforming square grooves. I would certainly find your results interesting as I have had my Ping eye 2 for 28 years and have just recently ordered the new Ping i which I'm still awaiting. From my custom fit I would say the new Ping i 7iron travels a few yards further and is slightly more forgiving than the Ping eye 2 6 iron, but with softer metal in the new Ping i it feels much nicer.

First set was Eye II BECU square grooves 3-SW. Still have them. Did a fitting last year on an outdoor range with Trackman. Tried Epon af703, XR, Big Bertha, RSI JPX 850 with various shafts. Tightest grouping -- Eye II. Longest distance (all 7 irons but lofts not the same) Epon AF703 -- 167.9 v 143.8. JPX 850 had next tightest group with 143.1 total yds. just about the same as Eye II's.I'm into the XRs which are at least two clubs further then Eye II. I'd like to see the BECU reshaffed in a Mitsubishi OT 85 stiff or Kuro Kage or pxi vs Ping G, XR OS, Apex.Closest lofts are XR 9i at 39* vs Eye II 8i at 40*. Closest to XR 7i is Ping 5i at 28.5*. I think the cup 360 tech makes a huge difference in ball speed and distance.

I played Ping Eye 2 red dot irons for a decade. Before the Ping's, I played Wilson Staff blades. Before the Staff, I played McGregor MT irons with the copper face. I liked the Staff irons, but I loved the Pings. Won a car by hitting a hole in one on a 191 yard par 3 with a Ping Eye 2 4-iron. Out came the Callaway Big Bertha Irons. Sold my Ping Eye 2's and bought a set of Big Berthas for, I think $600 bucks. Worst irons I ever played. Used the Big Berthas for 2 months and sold them for $400. Bought another set of Ping Eye 2's.
