New fan of the WNBA here. Unrivaled 3 x 3 BORES ME! I don't see a viable money-making sport here. The investors are optimistic without seeing a real revenue stream. Their 3 x 3 form of basketball lacks the nuances that Caitlin Clark brings. Her mores are similar to those of the HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS performances. NON-BASKETBALL FANS are ENTERTAINED by the excellent basketball moves of the Globetrotters. To me, 3 x 3 resembles STREET BASKETBALL pickup games. I'm not interested, and I'm concerned for the WNBA PLAYERS who will injure themselves and have their WNBA games thrown off by participation in 3 x 3 play. CAITLIN CLARK RAISES THE LEVEL OF PLAY of her teammates AND of the opposition who try to defend against her. This is why she alone is raising the level of play of the WNBA. Hopefully the level of play of the ENTIRE WNBA will rise as they continue to compete on the higher level Clark brings to the game.

There is a lot of extras a league can do when they don't have other expenses, example airline flights and hotels. The estimated cost of private charter for the WNBA in 2024 was 25 million. In December Unrivaled received about 28 million in sponsorship money. The one thing going against Unrivaled is the lack of local city/state support. They have six teams all playing games in the same location. You now have to get that support for teams based on individual player support. Most players do not have a huge following, with the exception of Caitlin Clark who draws fans all across the country. Hopefully it will do well in the long run and won't just be a novelty. What I don't like about the NBA is that the team comes down the court and shoots a three or one player isolates and goes to the basket for a jam. What I like about "team" basketball, which the WNBA and NCAA mens and women teams played, is just that. It's a team game. It takes teamwork to play. Could you imagine doing something like that other sports like hockey or soccor or lacrosse. Maybe we should turn football into 7 on 7 like they do in practices. Unrivaled starts in January against the NFL, NBA, and NHL. It also competes against the NCAA women's basketball. Everyone has their favorite teams and players. There is a reason the WNBA starts later in the season. If you look at the stats of the 36 players on Unrivaled, you will see that over 50% had less than 10 points a game, and some had less than 6. They needed to fill 36 spots, and their stars are not playing. I wish they succeed because they are underpaid, but I am not sure.

I will guarantee in the new CBA deal WNBA will not allow their players play in unrivaled. And if the WNBA cant gain profit why does Unrivaled think they can? Also the only game that were shown last year that had more than 500,000 viewers was the Indiana Fever games. On any network if you are not pulling in 2 million, they usually cancel you mid season.
@shiwomino577512 күн бұрын
You clearly don’t understand the business side of this. Warner Bros. Discovery is essentially paying all of the player salaries with the media rights money Unrivaled is getting for the programming on the WBD properties (TNT, TruTV, MAX). They have a three year contract, with the option of extending it to 5, in which case the total value is over $100 million just from WBD. That plus all of their other sponsorships essentially has this project already profitable before a single game is played. Everyone staying in one location for the duration of the season eliminates major arena and travel expenses, which WNBA loses millions on every year. Unrivaled is being run as a much smarter business, is what it comes down to. And they’re paying everyone more than the WNBA is, so good luck giving any of these players an ultimatum. WNBA do not have the leverage if they try it.

@scottmorin35713 күн бұрын
They have one facility of course they made it state of art. I think having all the teams and talent all in one place competitors may not be the best atmosphere after awhile. Egos won’t allow it. This league screams XFL. The original. The one that set ratings records week 1 and then flamed out every subsequent week.

My prediction: good paydays to start, but great marketing can't overcome a bad concept. Rachel nailed it that full court 3x3 is one-dimensional. I think this ends up being the first and last year of Unrivaled because the ratings will be trash and the sponsors will bail. If they can somehow pay CC an exorbitant amount next year, the ratings will be fine for the first half but trend down as people realize it's still overall a boring concept.

Personally, I don't think Unrivaled will be as entertaining as the WNBA. I'm probably going to watch this first weekend. I think it's just too easy to dominate when there's fewer players. Back in the day, the NHL actually created a new rule to stop the Edmonton Oilers from exploiting a 4 on 4 situation. I think that fewer players makes defense that much more difficult.

So, at least for this season, it will all come down to TV viewership to determine the economic viability of the league, correct? With only 850 seats, the live game attendance and revenue will be modest, at best. If the broadcast viewership is high enough to justify the TV contract, great, but if it's not, the league could be in trouble fast if the broadcast partners have an option to pull out. Apparently, there is a lot of investor money behind the league, but that can last only so long if the economic model of the league (relying on TV contracts) isn't viable. The games will be what they'll be. Watch the TV ratings to learn whether this league has a chance to survive in the long term. I really question whether the lack of connection of the teams to a city and a local fanbase can work.

I’m so proud of Phees & Stewie for putting together the Unrivaled League. I’ve been watching NCAA women’s ball games from 2017-2024 of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Stanford Cardinals, Ohio State Buckeyes, Maryland Terrapins, LSU Lady Tigers, & South Carolina Gamecocks just to try to suffice my urges of not being able to watch Caitlin, Aliyah, Lexie (& her twin Lacie Hull), Kelsey, Megan Gustafson, Cameron, & Angel currently playing. I’ll definitely be tuning into watch Unrivaled & hopefully more people tune in. I get it… Caitlin brought most of us here, but that doesn’t mean we gotta ignore ALL the other talent of the W🤷🏾♂️❤️🏀🤙🏾

I'm all for more basketball. I hope Unrivaled is successful. And if they're paying their players so much more than WNBA it begs the question how? The WNBA has higher viewership. Where is the money going in the WNBA?

@10:45 If they're going to allow screens like this (leg and butt sticking way out), then it might get boring quick. ... In this case, Breanna Stewart would almost always get a good shot - either drive right past Angel (as Rachel said) or use a screen that Angel would be too slow to get around.

Because the league is in one place, the services are basically a mini-mall which serves 6 teams - they have economy of scale. It will be interesting to see if the W teams make the reach to provide better for their players

Full court is a 3vs3 drill, not a game ... The only way to make it sporting is to ban shots from within the paint OR rule that at least 1D player makes the paint before the O can shoot.

The only reason unrivaled can pay these types of salaries and provide these amenities right now because of outside money. It’s no different than Liv golf, or any other startup for that matter. It’s the typical Venture Capital model just being applied to sports. Ultimately all that matters in the long run is if people watch.
@thechister77912 күн бұрын
I don't see a problem if they are trying to get more money since WNBA cba maxes at 250 K while rookies only make 70-80K. NHL rookies cba starts around 775K for 2024/2025 season. This why they need to fire the WNBA Commissioner! She says the League can't depend on one player but yet they are not complaining the profit Caitlin has brought for them. Maybe Unrival will have better open mind treatment instead of old bags holding on to past failures!

With only 850 seats how is this league ever supposed to be profitable? No one wants to watch 3 v. 3 so I dont see them getting a big TV contract.

I hope Unrivaled does well and all athletes have fun + make $, i think it will be enjoyable. Think teams are quite evenly put together so games will be close. On a side note though - did you see on the 2 clips RAD showed how bad Reese actually is - setting screen was awful and her "defense" was as if we put a traffic cone there :D what a "star"

I have never bothered to watch a 3 v. 3 in my life and Unrivaled will not change that. More than a few of the 3 v. 3 players showed their immoral character last season. I would not lift a finger to put a penny in Sissorhand's pocket, or Diggins. Future headline: Unrivaled Backstabbers Sink Own Ship. Who wants to watch when a GOAT rookie is absent?

They share profit. Of course they are going to hype it up. If it doesn’t do well future years will mean decrease salary, less money for the extra stuff like Spas. They should focus on their PR and build up the WNBA as well instead of compare the 2.
@RamblingRob-vi7ct13 күн бұрын
That's okay but in order to have huge fan base built you need to be playing in different places . Playing all your teams under one roof won't excite most people to watch .

Maybe "Unrivaled" will outshine the WNBA in its first season and if it does, I have some ideas for the NBA brain trust to help the WNBA compete and continue their stellar legacy and reputation which has been painstakingly developed over the past 29 years. Hire Sheryl Swoopes as your new WNBA Commissioner then see if Jemele Hill is available to become the new Executive Director of the WNBA Players Association. After that hire Tim Donaghy as Director of Officiating and convince Sheila Johnson how desperately they need her to give up her ownership stake in the Mystics and become the czar of WNBA Public Relations and Media Management.
