Valid points. But I think at a certain point we're going to have to accept the reality that physical media is becoming more and more a collector's only market. It's not 1999 anymore where the masses are buying discs and therefore it makes financial sense to put out simple releases you can put in the bins at walmart or best buy. It costs studios money to do multiple releases, and at a certain point as physical media leaves the mainstream, it's just not viable to do a release that doesn't cater to collectors. And if they do, I can see a time coming when the simple release becomes more expensive, making the collector's versions even pricier. Be careful what you wish for. I remember the laser disc days when a barebones release would run you $35-$40. The economics are just not in our favor anymore.

To me it’s all about the artwork. I’ll buy a steel book if I like the artwork better than the slipcover edition but for the most part I’m good with the standard slipcover edition overall. I also try to avoid box sets like the ones Arrow puts out unless it’s the only way to get the film as I’m not big on extras at all anymore and just want the film itself in its best possible quality from a Audio/video perspective.

I don't care if it is steelbook, slip cover, or neither. I just am happy to get the movie. The more options in terms of packaging results in more costs to the studio or boutique labels and we don't want them to lose money and shut down.

I’d say yes because I don’t need all the extra stuff that comes in boxsets ( like the 4k of seven ) with steel books you still just get the movie. And boxsets are usually even more expensive then steel books

Options are great for us to have but product logistics are a thing too. A studio's going to be most inclined to offer options if it's guaranteed to be a really popular item. The more fractured a release is then the greater chance of misforecasting how much to release of each format/package, especially the more that sales drop across the industry... And that's just one of the things they have to consider.

I can't lie, with the costs of steelbooks now if i don't love the movie or have matching steelbooks for a series then i don't pick up steelbooks anymore.

Options are great, no question. Thing is.. expecting these studio releases to behave like boutique labels is unrealistic. Boutique labels specifically cater to us collectors, hence the options. They understand and strive to meet their customer’s desires and expectations. Studios on the other hand generally do not. Physical media is an afterthought for them and they really don’t care what collectors want and have always left money on the table with their lack of vision. Getting one style of a release, whether that be a Steelbook, slipcover, boxset, etc. is commonplace and should be expected from the likes of Sony, Paramount, etc. If Steelbooks become more the norm than say a standard no frills release with the occasional slipcover then so be it in my eyes. At this point I’m just happy to get the film on 4K. Sure you may pay a bit more for the premium packaging but how many years have us 4K collectors had to pay more for that extra blu-ray copy we couldn’t care less about and before that the BD collector with the DVD? This is nothing new, it will never change. We should all just be thankful we have more boutique labels now more than ever to break that cycle somewhat.

I admit it I’m at a point i’m my life that I can afford a decent, not extravagant, 4K atmos system so I appreciate the box sets and SB’s as they become available. I’ve had to change my buying paradigm from waiting for the price to come down to purchasing the pre-ordering my movies on the day that a preorder is announced! FOMO! We need to remember that people buying 4K’s are only @4% of purchases as of last week! DVD’s are up to 70%! If you were publishing disc’s what format would you concentrate on?

Disney has only put out the Disney + shows in steelbooks. I personally like those steelbooks but I saw on forums that many people wanted to have slipcovers as a option.

I prefer steelbooks, but I also like a good slipcover, so heh, give me both, the best of both worlds. I'm not a big fan of the ones that are just held on by the plastic wrapping, though, which seem to be getting more common. I prefer the "full body" ones that slide over the case.

Hey Ken.....good subject to talk about. But I always feel that you are just being honest how you feel in your reviews. That's what I luv about your reviews.....they are informative for me to know what kind of release I should be looking for. I so appreciate that.....cause I like to get a 4K release that contains both the 4K and the bluray (don't know why, but I just like to have a backup). Many times the standard release will only have the 4K,,,,,but the Steelbook will have both (or vice versa). I count on your videos (as well as Movies & Sue and Plant CHH) for these types of reviews. You all are really very informative and honest about the release......I don't see anything wrong with that. I agree with alot of your points here......and I thank you for it!!! It's certainly hard to cater to every preference. I own movies that I really enjoy the big chunky box set while plenty of other movies in a generic case with no special features is good enough. A good portion of movies I wouldn't even own if it weren't for the fact I was able to buy them new for under $10.

Yes, it's definitely annoying to me mostly bc of price and availability. I miss the days when we used to just get standard blurays, slips or not, and priced at about $22 to start, then eventually discounted to like $10 or even $5 on Black Fridays if we were lucky.... and with NO flimsy eco cases! I recall getting the standard bluray edition of The Crow for $5 on a Black Friday Best Buy deal like 10 years ago or so. Awesome. But I'm realistic. The market has changed and studios are aware that the amount of people buying these brand new are WAY more limited. They need to look out for their own budgets, and sometimes they need to print and release these in limited quantities. The availability is also annoying bc in the example of Young Guns, I've never even seen the standard edition. A lot of these are just online-exclusive, or boutique labels being really pricey and available for a few months and then up on eBay for insane prices. But with the days of multiple physical media aisles in stores being gone, this is just going to happen until it gets a resurgence like Vinyl records did.

I only want a 4K with a slipcover. I hate steelbooks. I also don't want anything extra that will take up more space, I don't have room for it. I had to buy the SLC Punk 4K on ebay because I didn't care about getting any other movie in the box set but SLC Punk is in my top 10 favorite movies. I am still hoping The Ring movies get stand alone releases because I only want the 1st one.

Weirdly, all the movies from the Columbia Vol 1 set have been released as standalone 4Ks in Europe, except for "League of their own". Maybe they thought a Baseball movie wouldn't do well in a region where Baseball is a very niche amateur sport at best.

I think the obvious reason that they just release steelbooks is because steelbooks sell much better. The departed and the crow steelbooks are sold out on Amazon but not the slips. So the studio looks at that and says we'll slipcovers don't sell nowhere near as well as steelbooks, so why release slips. Plus, it's a way to charge more.

I love Umbrella thus far - they not only give you options but they will re-release LE Big Box sets like Mario Bro’s trust the fungus set. It sold out quickly and they sent out another communication letting their audience know they would print more runs of that set. I thought that was awesome and I was able to get that set (coming in June for me now) but at least I’m getting a chance at it versus having to pay scalper prices…

It used to bug me, when they only did steelbooks . But it don't bother me anymore, I happy to have the Movie in 4K format. What I usually do is I buy all my Movies 🎬 in 3 Formats DVD, BLU RAY, 4K.

I think they should bring a standard edition out when they bring out steelbooks. They shouldn't make you buy a steelbook just to increase the profit margin. Some movies don't deserve a steelbook.

Columbia Classics 1 has 3 of its movies released individually- Gandhi (UK release) Dr Strangelove (Aussie release ) and Lawrence of Arabia (USA) . I'm far from a collector, but am buying more and more physical media, but personally I don't care for steelbooks nor slipcovers and wouldn't pay extra for them. I'm fine with a regular plastic case. What I would pay extra for and would like to see are coloured blu-ray cases. Why is is to hard to find other colours?!

Some of us do like steelbooks, though, and I think of all the movies that didn't get a steelbook release at all, or the movies that got just a plain plastic case release, sans any slipcovers OR steelbooks - and as we all know, and Ken also mentioned, there often just isn't enough copies of any of them available in any form. It sucks how often we feel compelled to preorder a movie or order it right after release because we know that there's usually only a 50-50 chance at best that it won't be sold out a few weeks up the road, and who knows if any more copies will be released. But personally, I'd like to see more limited edition steelbook boxsets. ;)

I've grown to really like steelbooks. I have only 20 steelbooks but out of my physical media collection some of the steelbooks are my absolute favorite in my collection. Great art and less flimsy than slips or blu-rays with no case.

For me it really depends on the film itself. Sometimes I don't want that standard edition because the steelbook looks cooler art wise. Then I prefer the standard edition over the limited edition boxset with all the goodies. I do agree that some of these studios should re-release these films in standard editions.

I have a very small steelbook collection, mostly cause they were clearemce and super cheap, honestly given the choice i would get a standard version over a steelbook, also I dont hate slips, but if it has the same art as the cover i really dont care about them. I also dont need those SF sets with all the pins and posters and BS, I like an arrow style boxed set with a bunch of lesser known movies, but i dont need a massive edition of one movie like the recent Titanic set, lol I like a nice new comisssioned artwork, a small booklet is a plus, art cards are fine, but its about the movie and the special features for myswlf

I really have a problem with Colombia. Have a backlog of films that only made DV. D never saw the light of day on blu. Ray It kills me that films like the Survivor's with Walter matheu and Robin Williams It's like Some of these older films have just totally fallen off the grid Or Warner brothers releasing the Superman's only in a 4K set and not separately. I personally can't stand Superman 3 and 4 I already bought Superman 1 on 4K so I don't need to rebuy that 1. The second film would be quite helpful separately. Collecting is a frustrating hobby.

Event Horizon was one of those from Paramount. It took them nearly a year to come out with the slip version. I remember the steelbook selling out within the first week, and I don't think it ever got reprinted as such.

I have many steel books and special packaging movies, and to tell you the truth it just takes up space useless. I rather just have the disc in a clear slip, I believe the packaging is just a way to juice the price. I dont think a single time have i ever read the booklets, or other or looked at any of the printed crap they put in these special additions after first opening. It really adds nothing.

I would rather buy the steelbook in person and look at them person. I miss Best Buy. Like yesterday I found Lawrence of Arabia 4k steelbook and Starship Troopers 4k steelbook. Both 4k steelbooks were in excellent condition so I bought them. Also stopped buying steelbook from Amazon because they don't ship them well. The last movie I got was Scream 3 4k steelbook and I got it bent. I backed off of ebay too because people who sell steelbooks aren't honest sometimes. Lately I tell the seller to ship them in boxes to prevent damaging the steelbook.

I don't mind multi-film boxsets, since those are usually good value ( just got an Ingmar Bergman one which is 8 films for 50 quid), but I do mind the premium one film boxsets. I really don't want to pay extra for a poster, book and postcards. I also feel like I'm being scammed with the parts of a trilogy being released in 4k one at a time (like Blade). I feel torn between fear of missing out and fear that I'll buy them only for a trilogy boxset to be released later on. Argh!

Sony, a company notorious for letting titles go out of print for years and for releasing titles exclusively to expensive box sets [that also aren't shelf friendly] that also go out of print.

I like steelbooks for movies that have a "metal" feel/aesthetic about them somehow, or if they have a clever, appropriate gimmick. Robocop and Terminator seem like the most "no brainer" movies to have steelbooks. Most dramas or comedies don't need steelbooks or even feel right in them. Forrest Gump, Sound of Music, Lassie, Casablanca, etc don't feel like they need steelbooks to me. Limited Edition boxes for individual movies works for any genre. Standard editions should exist for any of it.

I just want the movie. Will I spend extra on cool artwork or packaging if it is a movie/set I want but don't already have in 4K yes. Examples include Hunger Games and Indiana Jones. If I must have extra packaging on a steelbook, I would like a plastic cover like the Expendables set to keep scratches to a minimum. I like options because not every movie needs to be 4K or in a steelbook. If I'm expected to pay premium prices, I want a blu-ray and digital code with my 4K. Not everyone owns a 4K player (see my family) and if I'm traveling I would like to download a movie for viewing. No, I don't buy the big box sets because they generally only have one or two movies I want or can live without. Speaking of sets, include ALL the movies in that franchise. If studios want big bucks, I want all the movies. I enjoy watching some of the "less" favorites of franchises.

Ken, I have to also say Paramount Scares did people a bit dirty by only making Sweeney Todd part of their boxset too. I don’t think that’s gotten a steelbook or slipcover release by itself. They said to people the only way to get it was to buy the set which was kind of overhyped. Fans were expecting Friday The 13th Part 2 or something like that. To hype up the mystery title, tell KZbinrs they couldn’t show it in their reviews until a certain date, and then reveal it as Sweeney Todd was a bit underwhelming. Good movie but not hyped up as a mystery title good. Like I said, not fair to say if people wanted it like that they HAD to buy the entire set. No thanks. I appreciate what Paramount does for Friday The 13th and other franchises like Star Trek, but that was doing fans dirty right there. I have friends who wanted Sweeney Todd and are still sore that it hasn’t gotten a solo release. Sorry but it’s pretty low for Paramount to pull that. Bad enough that instead of giving us Friday the 13th Part 2 on 4K already, they re-released the exact same 4K in a steelbook and asked fans to wait longer. Kind of a slap in the face to fans who were more than willing to buy the first movie on 4K but are still waiting for the next movie on the format.

They really need to get their act together a little more if they're gonna be handling the Disney-owned catalogs. I do think Sony does some solid restorations/4K transfers, but I also can't disagree with anything you've said here. They definitely need to work on the options they provide to customers.

Got some more Ghostbusters 1 and 2 Black Hawk Down, Godzilla, Cliffhanger, Guns of Navarone, Bridge on River Kwai all have slipcovers, crouching tiger got a 4k slip of course version in the Sony Classics set is Dolby Vision. We got those Paramount presents 4ks a lot cheaper here in the UK. We got a Blue Hawaii standalone 4k.

Kenny I can't Stand steelbooks. I really don't understand the attraction outside of the collectibility. I prefer a standard Slip cover release and having the original artwork on it from the film. I hate when they deviate like Warner brothers atrocious 4K. Releases the only steel book that I have is national lampoon's vacation from Best buy, and that is because it had the original artwork. My son is an avid Steel book collector and we have this discussion all the time. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

As a rule I am not a really big fan of Steel books but I have made a couple of exceptions recently and that is with killer clowns and the crow. But I would much rather have the choice of one or the other. I only am getting taxi driver steelbook because that is the only option but if they had a regular Blu-ray cover Edition I would have gotten that for that title.

I only care about getting the 🍿 released. I do really like Steelbooks and some Collection Box sets, but I won't stop paying my bills for getting those, If the price is right for my budget I'll go for it. The studios have to think in the masses, the current common people too. Slipcovers are also nice, but not durable. There are some plastic slipcovers that are better than paper.

Sony is charging $56 ($63 after tax in Ontario) for the Taxi Driver steelbook so I'm refusing to buy it. I really do want it but just not that badly. I was expecting to pay $48. Just give us a decently priced standard edition if you can't keep the steelbook price reasonable! It's bullshit!

I do tend to be an early adopter so usually don’t miss out on some of those box sets I even got Columbia classics Vol 1 I accept the direction it’s going let’s face it if you don’t think it’s worth it don’t buy it basically. Taxi Driver clearly Sony thought it was time. And what about Sweeney Todd 4k only in that Paramoumt Scares set Sony isn’t the one at it. Sony don’t have to release those classics titles 4k but they are now choosing to. Lawrence of Arabia 4k steelbook, Taxi Driver 4k steelbook, Gandhi 4k Amazon UK , Dr Strangelove 4k UK.

Steelbook are cool but hate limited edition one cause twister 4k was huge disaster worse than Cameron 4k amazon sold out or pulled back on theirs n Walmart too guru says in stock 29.99 but no add button

For me it depends on the movie and how much I enjoyed it enough to buy said boxset but more than likely I prefer steelbook

I appreciate the artwork on the cases and steelbooks but the disc is more important to me. I won’t lie though, Umbrella’s Late Night with the Devil set looks amazing lol

I have been buying used steelbooks more. I am not big into the box sets with all the extra things added, I just want the movie. Why pay 50 for extras like posters or books for a movie that is really 20

20th Century Fox is terrible, also! There are so many 1980s films, from 20th Century Fox, that haven't even been released on blu ray. What is their problem???

Few things: 1) releasing two versions of the same movie on the same day may have been something people got used to deeper into the blu ray cycle but that’s hardly the norm for physical releases. 2) I like buying steelbooks but sometimes the art looks stupid and I will opt for the slip. But you say you usually don’t prefer the steel yet you’ve gone with the steels more than me it seems. 3) I don’t think you’re a hypocrite. I would say really nitpicky

With the 3rd Sony release of Karate Kid you complained about Sony not doing a steelbook for it and if they did you would have bought it. So again get on the studios that do terrible work and hate the collectors…..
