As a former vcr repairman in the 1990s I never understood the collecting of video tapes, tapes by nature degrade even if it's never played, they are magnetic with metal and that metal for lack of a better term "falls off the tape" I remember years ago when people were collecting old 8-track music tapes, once again they will degrade over time, I just could never justify spending that kind of money on video tapes. But to each his own, your video was a fun watch.

Impressive video! I also caught the VHS bug in 2021 and have since dedicated numerous hours to my research. One significant realization I made is the absence of a definitive guide on the subject. Instead, I discovered that the most reliable information could be gleaned from studying the tumultuous home entertainment industry of the 1980s and 1990s. It was a truly chaotic era, marked by mergers, acquisitions, separations, lawsuits, and shady dealings. It seemed like nearly every studio and distribution company was intertwined at some point or another. Consequently, with each change came new iterations of company names and logos, which necessitated alterations on the actual tapes themselves. This process typically occurred rapidly. By familiarizing oneself with this rich history, identifying the initial releases-often the most sought-after ones-becomes a relatively easier task.

Most used vhs tapes aren't worth much. Pretty hard to find used vhs worth more than $50
@pickingandpunching Жыл бұрын
Majority of the big money will come because of the rarity of the item. It's hard to come by a sealed VHS in amazing condition from 40 years ago. Majority of used vhs are not worth much. Horror category would be the exception to that.

These prices are for US Releases. Original Foreign releases that are still sealed could still bring a pretty penny.

How much does it typically cost to get a VHS graded? I have some ones he mentioned that are in excellent shape…some even sealed.
@commonwealthflipper Жыл бұрын
60 bucks
@pickingandpunching Жыл бұрын
I would recommend starting out with a small sample size. Around 3-5 range because it’s more cost efficient with shipping. You should also self grade your tapes before you send them in. Write it down. When you get them back, you will have a good understanding on how close you were or if you need to do more research.

Hi, I was clearing out my recently deceased uncles estate and came across hundreds of vhs movies. They seem to be in excellent condition, maybe only viewed once, but they are not sealed. As I was packing them up I noticed a few of the ones on the top 10 list in this video, like top gun and the thing and maybe rocky. Is there any value to these movies if they are not sealed? My uncle was definitely a horror fan because I noticed a lot from that genre. I also remember packing up around a dozen sealed movies but I didn't pay much attention to what they were. Wondering what to do with all these vhs movies. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks
@pickingandpunching7 ай бұрын
What makes the valuable is that there aren't a lot of them still sealed. Those open tapes you have maybe worth a couple of dollars. Sorry.
@terryromines653910 ай бұрын

I actually have a legit question- so what if you find a rare vhs but it's open and not sealed. Is it ever worth grading and how much does it affect the value?
@pickingandpunching Жыл бұрын
Until recently, they were only grading sealed copies. I do believe that grading raw copies (open vhs) will become more popular down the line. Majority of the time 98% of the open vhs you find are going to be a dollar or two. There are a lot of rare open vhs out there that do have value, especially horror vhs. The reason for that is some of them had a low print run or the company went out of business and the movie was never released on DVD.

Trading cards are a good analogy for literally EVERY category of re-selling... Every area of a thrift store I'm unfamiliar with I know I'm walking past gold because I don't have the knowledge...
