As someone who mostly buys 9's and only a few 10's when it comes to graded cards, I can say certainly say there are good 9's and bad ones. I have one specific card that I genuinely think should be a 7, yet I guess the grader was feeling a bit quirky that day and slapped a 9 onto it.

for modern cards, I’d say that for a lot of big collectors that a nine is ehh. Getting a 9 on an older card however, during xy and older grading was not as common then, unlike now where most high value cards get graded as soon as they are pulled. Older stuff has had time to sit raw in boxes, get traded two dozen times, or played with, and that’s not even considering the quality issues during certian eras of the game.

Most modern PSA 9s can be bought for about the cost of a raw card+ the price to grade it. If you see a raw card that you think will grade below a 9, you're better off buying the 9. In general though, I think card grading is in a weird spot. Part of me never wants to grade my cards and the other part of me wishes I had a collection of 10s of every card. I think it's better to lean away from graded cards right now because it seems like a lot of singles are just overpriced in the current hype/bull market.

9s are great, you get a good looking card that most normal people at first glance looks perfect for a more reasonable price. I love my Japanese Pokemon CD Promo PSA 9 Charizard, Blastoise and Venasuar. The Venasaur has a cool holo bleed as well.

I only collect PSA 9s, I’m not an “investor” I buy what I like. With some cards the price of a 10 vs 9 can be double or triple, for me personally that’s not worth it as 9s are very mint.

These 9’s are definitely going to be worth a lot in the years to come. It’s not really the grade but the card itself that becomes much more valuable, and for collectors who want a minty copy of that card probably have no issue paying the money for 9 or even an 8.

I love 9s when theyre the same price as raw. I also prefer slabs for expensive cards because its easier to tell in low-quality pictures if a slab is fake vs a fake card. I love 9s and 8s for vintage for the same reason as theres a lot of fakes out there. Especially from the psa auctions, since theyre directly from psa.

Difference between 9 and 10 is some rando's mood on that particular day. That should tell you all about grading scam. A quality binder full of carefully picked assortment of cards is a bigger flex than the stack of Beckett 10s.

It really depends on what you're trying to get out of your collection. If you're trying to maximize the monetary value, then yes, mostly they are a waste of time. But as always, there are exceptions. If it is an exceptionally rare card - think like a Scream Pikachu promo - then there's still value in a PSA 9. If you want to get emotional value out of owning the card, because you really enjoy the card, and want it protected (at least to some degree) then they're great!

Picking up graded cards for less than or a couple bucks more than raw is a no brainer to me. I picked up a Regidrago V Alt in an 8 the other day for the same price as NM raw, if I want it in a binder I can open it, if not I have a slabbed NM+ card for the price of raw. There’s even cases like Sylveon Vmax alt art where you can pick up a NM 7 or 8 for 50-60 bucks less than raw, that’s bonkers

8 and 9 are still pretty much perfect cards. The price premium on a ten makes nearly no sense to hold onto so I’d sell them and keep the lesser grades usually. If I grade a 10 that’s fine but I’m not going out of my way to pay a premium for a card that didn’t deserve the 10 in the first place
