"Mi Rey" is the same thing as saying "campeon". As far as nicknames goes, yes Colombian culture is similar to American Italian culture in which a friend will call their buddies "Tony two chins, Frankie Fingers, Big Sam" etc. I'm 6'6" and my close friends call me "pollo de Finca" which translates to "Farm Chicken" 🥵 because they're usually bigger than pen raised chickens. I might add that you have no choice in which nickname you're given so you must just roll with it. If you get angry it will only get worse. lol. As far as cheating it does happen a lot. Mostly by men. Every day more woman are not taking this crap anymore and they are fighting back. I think it happens all over the world but Colombian men in general are less careful about getting caught. I personally have been faithful to my second wife for 25 years. I learned my lesson. Cheers!

The other day a homeless guy called me pollo and I got really angry. I thought he was insulting me because in English calling someone a chicken is calling them a coward. It is true. My girlfriends father left his first family to begin another. Men cheating is common. Some women tolerate it, some will not tolerate it in the least. My girl will not tolerate it. But unlike my USA girlfriends she is not super jealous. This is 1 reason Colombian women like foreign men. They are less likely to cheat or have a side chick. No way can I keep 2 women happy. Forget about it. Everyone is “Amor”. At first I was like. It is to early in our relationship for you to tell me you love me. She’s like no-it is a cultural thing. Very confusing. Good video “Amor”. 😊

After 6 months of not being able to visit my fiance started seeing another guy. When I found out I was told he was just company and he was told I was her priority.... It was strange to have her mother defend her and try to convince me not to leave her daughter. Before her I was seeing a woman who I found out months in she had a boy friend and lived with him. She told me I made her feel more loved but she met him first. Both assumed with their reasons I would be okay with it... It's is strange and difficult for me.

I assume she’s in Colombia? I have been in the same situation. It’s just that for Colombian women, interaction and physical contact is important. So long distance doesn’t really work. I’ve been in 3 ldr and I’ve learned a lot.
@juliorr2
@juliorr2 Жыл бұрын
Every woman has different motives. But if in the beginning there is chemistry, the same goals, motives, and both people are looking for a serious relationship........it is still going to be hard for a long distance relationship to work. For the woman, she is going to have so many guys after her in Colombia. Obviously most of them just want to have sex with her. And she might be ok with that, meaning she fools around, but doesn't take them serious. She may be faithful, but it is highly unlikely if you are not seeing her on a regular basis. There is so much temptation. Plus, maybe 1 out of 5 of these guys might turn out to be a good colombian guy, who wants a serious relationship. You on the other hand are like a dream come true. You as a foreign man, is like winning the lottery.......it's highly unlikely that she'll win......but it is worth the shot. The Colombian women tend to think that most men are dogs, so how is a forienger much different? It's hard for them to think that you, as a foriegner are being faithful, not exercising your options in your country. So they figure that they will shoot/hope for the best in a long-term relationship with you, but if you wait to long to go and see them and/or other good/decent/handsome/sexy colombian guys, cross their path, she will probably cheat. That has been my experience. My best advice would be to: Go to Colombia for a long period of time, like 6 months or a year ( this way you get to know the person and spend quality time with them) and PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR ACTIONS, not their words. It's a number's game. Finding true love is like playing the lottery. Not everyone wins, but you still have to play in order to win. If you win, life is great!

Good video and interesting observations. In the vast majority of the Spanish speaking world (if not all of it), it's the norm to address people with "amor", "cariño", "mi reina", "negro, negra", gordo, gordita" and the list goes on. Don't over think it or get excited and think the person you're talking to is interested in you. And with "negro, negra", the person being addressed can be white as a sheet. It's also common for couples to call each other this, and yes, even white couples. People in relationships can also address each other as "gordo, gordita" affectionately. But in general, Spanish speakers also use words like "pelón", or "gordo, gordita" to simply describe someone (in addition to addressing them) without the intention of insulting. Giving people nicknames (apodos) is very common, many of which those of us from the US would find insulting. Cheating....well, what country doesn't have people that cheat, lol. It's the norm, the question is just how open is society when it comes to talking about it or acknowledging it. Here's some Colombian Spanish related to cheating: La moza or El mozo (amante, side piece) Poner los cachos (cuernos) - to cheat El ganado - Literally a herd of cattle. One or more side pieces that you're talking to La oficial - your actual girlfriend or wife (I don't know if they have a term for men) La surcusal - The side piece / girlfriend Have fun with those, LOL.

Cities have changed a lot in Colombia.. If you knew Medellin in the early 80’s you wouldn’t recognize the city now. People is completely different and also culture and relations. Downtown Medellin was a very sophisticated area where teenagers and middle class and rich people went for a walk or shopping in high rated stores. Also the best jobs and services were located in downtown. La Playa was a beautiful boulevard full of trees and gardens. Today downtown Medellin is a huge public market and most of the people were not born in this city and they brought their Caribbean culture to an Andean city and also their own culture, food and social relations. Street food became a rule, music and noise everywhere a mixed with vallenato, champeta or heavy metal and sex and relations became more temporal specially in the lower social strata. Richest people move to El Poblado and other people took their areas in Laureles, Bolivariana or Prado. Today it’s very interesting because people are moving to Rionegro, El Retiro or LaCeja to live in peace with nature and without the stress of noise, security and traffic difficulties . It’s a very alive city with many social interactions and changes in just few years.

I've been in Medellin for almost a month dating here is interesting to say the least 😳. YES OMG why does EVERYTHING have CHEESE ON IT?! So weird seeing cheese in hot chocolate LOL! Also what I noticed is when I'm with someone white walking in the streets, I hear gringo quite often but when I'm alone no one says anything LOL! My Uber drivers always ask where I'm from. I've had a couple of Uber drivers speak english that was a shock. OMG and yesterday I heard a "ice cream truck" type of song playing from this van in Laureles but it wasn't ice cream...a woman went up to the van and dude was selling donuts! LMAO!!! And can't forget the street vendors walking around with microphones. There are so many quirky things here.

The cute names really threw me when I was there the first time. I thought this guy was flirting with me, only to realize that was a local cultural thing. But i've also found esp the Paisa people to be extremely warm friendly and affectionate. I'm accustomed to hugging my friends and family not necessarily someone I've just met. After getting used to it, it's rather an endearing trait. That, and meeting a persons entire family that you've only just met. Blew....my.....mind!

So a lot of foreigner men come here trying to find a wife and the only way for them to pick up is always showing how wealthy they are and first thing they want is sex. If a Colombian girl wanted sex she would do it with a local, because let's be real, foreigners are not good at sex and they only talk about how wealthy their life is where they are from and their travels around the world. How the hell does a foreigner pretend to be taken seriously by a local girl in a third world country just flexing how cool their life is??? So when they leave they just say "oh! They are a bunch of gold diggers". I KNOW overseas when you are trying to find a partner what matters is how tall, how fit, which car do you have, you job.... Believe me, here as long as you treat people right, you will find someone, DON'T BE FUCKIN SUPERFICIAL!!! Richest people from here are not like that, for example Shakira or Sofia Vergara which are the ones you might know. They are not as plastic as american celebrities.

@dsvilla Take it from me, I'm Colombian-American and I can tell you through personal experience that if you're faithful to your wife, she'll reciprocate and not play around on you. This is assuming you want a woman with good fundamental family values. I'm oversimplifying for the sake of this forum. As long as you show her that are a "varon", a man, in all senses of the word like providing for the family, being good a father, displaying kindness and supporting and standing up for her when need be, you'll be fine. On the other hand if you decide to play the field, all bets are off. Colombian woman are extremely passionate and this passion can roll over to vengeance or at the very least, she'll leave you and that's it. You'll have to move on. I think it's common sense but I love the way a good Colombian, Venezuelan woman will support you through thick and thin. They will always stand up for you and in general you can rest assured they won't back stab you for no reason. Good luck and don't fret. You'll be fine.

México is the same way.. they are just terms of endearment. If you are an American from the U.S. or a Mexican national, none of Colombias foods, especially cheese would be considered salty by their standards. Colombian hot chocolate is very delicious, and it is similar to Nestles Abuelita commercial chocolate. I tend to bring the brand POPULAR chocolate from Mexico to Colombia and all that try Popular say it's an extremely delicious chocolate. Of course, I don't put in cheese.. I put in malvaviscos instead and with a touch of cream and 1 cinnamon stick.

Colombia has changed a lot in the last 30 years and people have moved from rural areas or small towns to bigger cities for many reasons like the famous Colombian conflict between guerrillas, paramilitary and Colombian army. Other moved for better education or better jobs. Cities have became a big social and cultural pots from different areas of the country. Social relations have changed specially about cheating and having many women or many husbands. In Tropical areas people always were involved in temporal relations so never they got married but women had many children from different Men. It’s the same now in big cities like Medellin, Cali or Barranquilla. According to your social status you will see it more often or not. The problem for me is not having many relations in your life but having many children. Poverty is very difficult to eradicate when people don’t have social a birth responsibility.

The Colombian food is good but bland. I have to always ask for black pepper and just a tad of salt, but thats me

I agree but I think that's because in America we have been eating food from all over the planet for many years. Mexican, Thai, etc. Very hot and spicy. Colombia is opening up to more international cuisine as time goes by. Colombian food is similar to Italian in which very little hot spices are used. Also more basic than Italian. I can adapt to either. I can't go too long without good hot and spicy Mexican food however. My favorite! Cheers!

@@LouieManza That's good to know since I am going to Colombia in February. I am not a big fan of hot and spicy food, (like Mexican food) and I was a little worried that is all they had there. Good to know!

In regards to cheating...Relationships are not finite like they are in the NA and Europe. Love is something that is not limited to who I married. I can love many people but still feel I have one stable relationship. That is one of the reasons the word “amor” is so commonly used. Most men and women have cheated but that does not mean they stopped loving their spouse. Sex is different than marriage here. It is a macho culture here where men lead and women understand how men are. The United States, by comparison, has turned into a feminized, confused mess where traditional male-female relationships have been destroyed. No one is happy there. Love should not be defined by the government, but what is natural. Colombians do a good job of accepting this idea and it is one of the reasons why it is one of the happiest countries on earth. Regarding names, consider it a reference point. If someone is fat, he is el Gordo or gordito. That way it is understood who I am talking about.

stop saying macho culture like its expected and acceptable. It's a shit culture in that regard, and women shouldnt put up with that shit if they were more educated and had higher economic mobility. as of now the latest data shows only 65% of colombians have access to internet.

The "cheating thing" or th "sidechicks" is something that does happens here more than it should but it's not like "a thing" from our culture, it's not like we want that or we are thought that, it's just that happens more than we would like too Ps: We are not on a rush to cheat, or we are not looking to cheat on our partners, so don't be afraid to be with a Colombian
