There is an unexpected blue zone in the fast food homeland, the United States. In Loma Linda, the Christian faith has gained a strong grip, which may have contributed to people living much longer here than in the rest of the world.
In this food and lifestyle documentary series, internationally renowned chef Niklas Ekstedt explores the secret of living past the age of 100. He’s travelling to six of the world’s ‘blue zones’ - regions such as Sardinia, Costa Rica, and Okinawa in Japan, where unusually high numbers of people reach an advanced age - in a quest to find the recipe for a long and healthy life. Along the way, he befriends locals and gets to know them, joining in with their daily routines and discussing their approaches to life, food, and ageing. He also reveals different ways of living. For example, in Ikaria, Greece, he discovers a town which keeps the stress levels down by not keeping track of time. And, as you would expect from a leading chef, he also can’t resist sampling some of the local specialties in every place he visits.

I 'm an atheist who once attended the Adventist church and some of the food tips remain even these days. In fact, the gathering to eat after church service is one of the things I miss from the church days. The social structure created to support each other is really something strong and endearing, even to a lonely guy by nature like me. great video!!

I was raised a Catholic and sought the church that gave answer to my many questions in life. I went church hopping til I landed in the SDA church. I could say, the nicest and most loving people I have ever seen are these people and the happiest time of my life was joining this faith. As long as we don't look at the people but on Jesus alone.

Correction: Most American churches use the term "Pastor" not "Priest". Also vegetarianism is not "Christian" persay. The New Testament says to eat all things as long as it's received with Thanksgiving. There's a famous scene where Jesus and his disciples ate fish. If a Christian wants to be vegetarian to have a healthy temple that's fine, but a Christian can certainly eat meat and fish.

I realize as an English assistant teacher in JPN--I haven't done much to tell the Japanese otherwise about how Californians (because i usually talk about CA culture w them), even Millennials, tend to have very healthy habits compared to prior generations because we do care about health! I show them the junk food for laughs and shock value, but actually, many Americans are trying to shift to healthier lifestyles. In California, we care about our mental health, we care about taking care of our bodies, the environment, going outside, socializing with others, and so on! We're still stressed like others because of the struggles living there, we still want to "make it in life," but we do want to be healthy! My generation does eat pretty heathily and especially in my hometown area. We do enjoy food A LOT . . . But we have so many international options to choose from, and we have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options in California, which may surprise many international people.

The secrete to a healthy long life is easy. Just let go of all the things that you have no control over and just enjoy what you do. Psychopaths and sociopaths live long life for this same reason. They don't care and the stress of caring just isn't there. Religions offer this same concept. Don't worry just put everything into gods hands and be free. Same principle. It does work.

This video reminds me of an article I read some time ago.On it they interviewed 3 different men, the first one was caucasian(like most of the people on this video), the second one was Latino/Hispanic, and the third one was African American. One of the questions asked on the interview was, "What are your plans for your retirement?" The Caucasian man answered: "I have stocks, bonds, savings and a retirement home in Florida. I am going to enjoy myself and spend time on my hobbies". The Latino/Hispanic man answered: "I will keep working all my life until I die. I am poor and have no other choice." The African American man answered: "As a black man, I will be very lucky if I am alive to reach my retirement age." Living a quality life for the elderly in the USA depends on their socio-economic status. Many elderly in 2022, live in poverty and suffer from loneliness, food insecurity, shelter insecurity and lack of access to decent health services.

Interesting, that Marijke after more than 50 years in the USA still has a Dutch accent. What this man said at around 15:30 is to me one of the most important and must neglected secrets of a happy life: giving is much more satisfying than taking, and this has nothing to do with religiousness (I'm an atheist myself). That's especially true for people who are very restrained accepting help - they not only do themselves a disservice, they also deny the other who offers help the greatest source of happiness.

Very interesting to see their point of view. As a regular Roman Catholic Christian I was very surprised as well at the Vegetarian diet connected to their church. As from Bible stories etc it always seemed clear that Jesus obviously ate meat as well as fish too. I do not necessarily think this is the only approach as many other of the Blue Zones show that a less restrictive and more "fun" approach to food works just as well. But I do think there is a point when it comes to believing.. either in God or in the Universe or whatever faith you are following. As it makes you feel more "protected" and that it is not only you alone struggling in this life. There is someone some higher power with you. Does not have to be the Adventists or Christianity or any specific religion I think, can simply be an understanding of the fact that we are all spiritual beings and our physical form is just like an avatar we use in this life time but that we are so much more. There is another zone that might be interesting to add to this series and that´s the Hunza region in the Himalayas in the North of Pakistan.. Many people there are said to live to be 100 or even 120 years old. Once watched a documentary and when asked of their secret for their longevity several of them said it is about staying away from the fast paced materialistic life style and that it´s important to have compassion in your heart.

Had you been at the Crucifiction of Christ, you would be in effect saying to Him as he hung on the cross, " you Judgmental intolerant fool dying for your personal beliefs- all beliefs are just as valid as yours...so you are dying on the cross in vain. Christ says to you personally: I AM THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE YOU WILL NOT COME TO GOD EXCEPT BY ME ALONE

I am not sure what the chef meant about proteins in corn and rice; however corn is known to be richer in sugars and protein, but rice is higher in calories and carbs due to its starch content. There are better vegetarian options to obtain protein than from corn. Personally, I would not have mentioned corn as a good source of protein... really good video overall.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I appreciate how the other Blue Zones don’t emphasize religion, yet live as long as the Loma Linda Adventists, without all that fear of the “devil” and other fear-based beliefs. Actually, the only Blue Zone where men live as long as the women is in Italy. It seems like it’s connecting well to others that makes the difference besides the plant-based diet, exercise, etc.

Nella città di Ikaria, in Grecia, le persone non si preoccupano tanto del tempo quanto in altri luoghi. They spoke of the opioid crisis, very true, however now that the drugs are drying up they are all turning to worse, like crack. The opioid crises will remain a stain on this country for a very long time, generations of families ruined. We must get the fact out there that it is known that 1 in 3 people have the ability to become addicted to drugs. That’s huge. I don’t know if we can truly heal from this humanitarian disaster.

Interesting how the war on drugs disappeared? Big Opioid lawsuit lost by drug maker in US last yr. Also temp acting FDA head reportedly helped approve OxyContin + fentanyl. Ex head now on Pfz board and new head sits on Moderna board (who’s vac partly funded by DARPA). NIH owns Moderna patents and (maybe) google does too. Vanguard owns most of Pfz/Merk, US media etc plus BlackRock who as of 2020 runs US Fed/central bank who have strong influence over US govt incl congress. Similar in other countries. All easy to look up and confirm and not just take my word.

7/11, McDonald's, the first of the corporate chains that moved into about every farm town in California. If I were a betting man money would be on McDonald's when it comes to the younger generation of Loma Linda being in a blue zone 10, 20 years from now. Only at most ten percent of the farms left in a fifty mile radius of Loma Linda today than fifty years ago. Hundreds of dairies, farms, vineyards, lemon orange groves, fruit, vegetable farms, grass fed beef, chickens eggs honey, butter ice cream etcetera all local and all gone. Everything from clothing to automobile manufacturing gone from So Ca.l Was as self efficient as it gets.

@chef Niklas Now, the woman in the video who is telling us all about what she thinks is the cause of their longevity really doesn't know... I say this not to be condescending but to point out that she is merely an objective observer. She has not met all the people who do not eat healthily and do not exercise or go out of their way to take care of the body ...the ones that GOD has blessed with unusually long life and happiness! There are many who do all of those things and do not live to be that old because they do it without love. And there are many who only have their faith in GOD and love for the people in their lives that do none of those things yet live to be well over 100 and their hundred-year-old bodies are less aged too! You see, the secret is that you can do them or not, as long as you have faith in GOD and love for all the people that he loves in your life. And he will keep you alive and well and blessed! Just like the people of the Coya in Costa Rica. They attribute their vitality to the love of God! And this is an easy philosophy to live by because it is actually GOD's own love in you loving them! It's that simple. When we love the people in our lives, we want them to eat only the best most nutritious, and delicious foods. Likewise, when they love us they only want us to experience the best of those things! When we love them we want to do all that we can to bring them comfort and ease of heart... we never want them to stress or worry. When they love us and it is the same with them we are greatly comforted and there is so much overwhelming joy that fills our hearts and encourages us and even inspires us to refine our efforts in this pursuit. We grow more and more in love with GOD in the midst of his people and in everything. Now GOD is love... and so, when we are in love with love we have the secret to immortality. Because it's a love affair that should never end and a pleasure that never fades!! God who loves us and has so much pleasure in doing so shall preserve us forever just as we would if we were in his divine shoes! Being all-powerful means having the power to love the ones you choose and the ability to choose them all. We can choose to love all GOD's people even as he himself loves them. Because the real secret to it is in knowing that it is really HIM in them whom you are loving!!
