@@Alex-md6bu I haven't ridden that particular bike, so I don't know. But generally, rim brake bikes ride nicer, since fork legs and front wheel don't have to be beefed up to handle braking loads at the hub.

@@litchips I will only agree with that on the premise that the brand has just renforced a standard fork leg to take the braking load, when designed from day 1 to take the load you can have both the compliance and strength, breaking load and structural stiffness are not hand in hand you can build one without the other if you do it correctly

I was trying to buy a Canyon Ultimate with rim brakes - which weighed in at 7.0kg, cost £2400 - they relaunched it with DISC brakes, weight 8.0kg, cost £3200 - DUH Very Stupid 'update' - now 34% more expensive and 1.0 kg heavier !! Needless to say I did not buy the update disc and their proposal email got a short but rude rejection. This is the real reason disc brakes are being put on all updates - the bike industry is using the disc brake system to justify a 30% to 40% premium over rim version and people are buying this crap

Direct Mount is something that should have gained popularity a lot sooner (I mean DM in its modern form. I know cantilever and similar have been around for a very long time). If it did, maybe the whole trajectory of the rim versus disc decision might have went down differently. Unfortunately, direct mount really did not start to get popular on new models until disc had already started to take a foothold, and by then it was kind of too late. If people could have seen twenty years ago how much nicer it was over the old single pivot rim brakes, maybe thats the direction the industry should have went. Its the best middle ground solution.
@TheCountrySteve
@TheCountrySteve 2 жыл бұрын
The main reason for the push towards discs was that they work better with carbon rims though. DM calipers don't stop the problem of rim wear and overheating/delamination. That said, I do agree that it's a great system from a braking point of view
@alexjohnson6462
@alexjohnson6462 2 жыл бұрын
I concur. Carbon rims seem like the primary driving force toward adopting rim brakes. The two primary issues being poor braking of carbon versus alloy, as well as overheating of the brake track which can lead to rim blow out along the clincher and tubeless bead in cases where the rim gets way overheated and the epoxy softens from sustained downhill braking. Thats rare in practice, but its been shown that its easy to do in 'lab' tests. There's a good video of a manufacturer who leaves the brakes on as they test various carbon rims, and pretty much every clincher fails catastrophically. I switched to tubular carbon rims and it alleviates the most serious of those two problems as tubulars are virtually impossibke to blow out from overheating, however the braking still kind of sucks on carbon. Experimenting with different carbon pads and different carbon braje tracks (e.g. carbon that gas grooves cut into it, etc...) helps a bit, but rim brake advances on carbon rims are ever really going to beat disc. Still, I likd the tubulars rims because I know they wont fail from riding the brakes going downhill.

@@alexjohnson6462 I have had one blow out while descending a mountain pass in Scotland - it was a clincher on a Mavic alloy, the blow out was slow and left me with good control to come to a stop; no spectacular loss of control. My opinion is that while many people want to go carbon wheels, carbon simply isn't a great material for wheels - it is great for frames and making aeroplanes etc but it does not tolerate heat at all well as we know it tends to de-laminate; also the epoxy isn't that light so the lightest stiffest and best value still comes from alloy wheels, lighter, stiffer and faster. Also substantially less pricey. Try Ksyrium Pro Exalith with Direct mount braking - amazing.

Clearly, no new consumers cares about rim brakes. Plus, why would I want to see rim brakes when it just means money being wasted on R&D on a dying system? Money is better spent innovating on disc brake systems, than trying to build two bikes for two different systems. But, to be honest it doesn’t really matter to me. The industry already has shown that its moving towards no longer bothering to accommodate for rim brakes. So I’m not concerned that my next bike purchase will be held back by an industry’s need to cater to rim brakes.

Or maybe rim brakes have always been the crapier system to begin with, just that disc brake developmental have surpassed it in both weight and performance. Which is kind of telling of how crap a system rim brakes are; it’s had a 4 decade developmental head start in road cycling, only to be overtaken by disc which is still in its infancy. @@GCPerformance18 The bicycle industry does this - in the 80s they were fitting hub brakes, then in the 90s there were oval chain rings (Froome still uses these), now we have discs, it is a gimmick used to attract 34% premium, sooner or later cyclists will figure out that disc bikes are 1.0kg heavier, have asymmetric frame stiffness leading to asymmetric power transmission and are unsafe - you are much more likely to lock up your front brake and go over the handlebars or skid and fall in the wet or break the front fork. Cyclists will eventually figure it out. There is a real hussle at the bike shop when you question them pushing discs, it's bull sh#t

You obviously know nothing about buying a Pinarello Dogma - when you go to the Pinarello store you do not buy a bike off the shelf. They measure you up and agree a frame size - you can try out bikes on a turbo or have a bike fit session, you are then offered a choice of frames and can have a custom paint job if you want it, you can specify whatever group set you want, the braking system you want and you can take their options for wheels or get your own choice - the bike is built entirely to your specification as you want it - it is a custom build to your spec entirely - this is what you get for spending that much money and this is why Pinarello is in a class of it's own - it is your bike built your way to your spec. (That was my experience when I bought an F10 - these are the best bikes in the world because they are tailor made for their owner).

Sure, a lot of rim brake bikes are lighter. But who cares? Weight does not equate performance unless you’re doing a hill climb.
@durianriders
@durianriders 2 жыл бұрын
so for 100 years cyclists were taught that weight matters and now you say that it doesnt unless going up a hill. So why is your bike made of carbon then and why do you use such lightweight parts when sora shifts just as good but weighs more?
@portland675
@portland675 2 жыл бұрын
@@durianriders no one respects your opinions. You’re a hack. Probably the single worst source of cycling advice on the internet. We all know weight is mostly irrelevant and was always marketing BS. I’ve got multiple hill climb titles to my name, all done on a 17lb bike, because that’s all I could afford when I was younger. At 175lb body weight no less. If you don’t understand the difference between sora and ultegra, you’re dumber than I gave you credit for.

Nope. Aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder. I personally don't like the look of the modern dropped seat stays and disc brake cable integration. As to being inferior. Done a number of vids on this. Disc will stop you no quicker, and are less aero. The only advantage is in the wet, and are you going to ride this bike in the rain?
