Love this conversation. I completed sardine fasts with Dr. Boz and Dr. Lisa, which impacted my blood sugar and ketones in a positive direction! I'm a 79 y/o carnivore who has stalled in the weight loss department for many months. I just ordered some sardines on Amazon (I like warming them in brown butter) after watching Courtney's recent experience. Thanks for motivating me today‼

Unfortunately the 80's & 90's low fat high carb mentality created this idea of disordered eating. When you feed the body protein & animal fats it is actually nourishing the body so you can trust your body. Tracking can be really helpful for beginners or individuals who have hit a plateau. Yes, information is power. Carnivore has helped me feed my body and start water fasting which has been transformational. Thank you both for your courage & taking the time to share your knowledge & experiences. It helps more people than you realise. Thank you 🙏🫶

Serena, Courtney great discussion! I also joined in with y’all for 8 days of sardines prior to Hack Your Health! I had good results, without hunger or feeling deprived. I also don’t understand why so many are naysaying this…I think of it as a reset. It’s interesting, the point you make about calories/macros, because I definitely leveled out in my glucose and ketone readings by day five. Thinking about it now I was only eating two cans most days, with some added fat, because I simply wasn’t hungry for more. Highly likely I just wasn’t getting enough calories/fat and that would count for the slowdown… I will definitely pay more attention to the macros with my next sardine reset and let you know how it goes! You brought such a bittersweet smile to my face, my dog always loved playing hide and seek too! Fond memories!

This is a great discussion. I have eaten high fat (mostly) for my entire 18+ years. It's a very healing ratio with fatty fish. They're very easily assimilated by the body and converted to ketones easily. Mackerel in Olive oil is very similar in action

Or add Primal Kitchen (or make your own carnivore mayo) mayo, or add butter, or fry in animal fat if you like. Adding fat is good if you are not having all the oil they are packed in. That’s not for calories, but fat to help balance your blood glucose and have ketones. Sardines are not “disordered”, people may be disordered and have struggles with anything. It’s extremely individual.

You all are so awesome! ❤ I grew up on sardines so there was no stigma in that way but the restriction of just that single taste profile was what tripped me. I’ve done a few 3 day sardine challenges in the last year but always with the cream still in my coffee and little crutches like that. After binge watching your videos with Lisa, Adrien and RV guy I decided to go all in and it has been amazing. I have done 3-4 days every week for the past 6 weeks. I wear continuous glucose + ketones monitors and my numbers have never been so good. I am down 10 scale pounds but the tape measurements are much more profound. I am now introducing sauna and jump rope sprints to the mix. I am going thru menopause so that seems to be fighting me but….what a ride! 😊Thank you so much for helping inspire me!

I love this discussion! And I love being a carnivore, but intuitive carnivore eating has not gotten me to goal and it's been years now. In response to people criticizing the sardines, it seems like in general the carnivore community is snobby about beef being the only road to good health and success. I don't love the sardines, but they are packed with incredible nutrition and are definitely carnivore. It's a healthy hack that is done for a short term to help us reach our goals. I personally am having great success with it. Thanks Dr Boz!

Just started my first day of a 3 day sardine challenge. Can # one was Season brand in unsalted water. I added two tablespoons of melted Kerry Gold butter and some Frank hot sauce. It was delicious! My second can was Season brand in Olive oil… it’s givi me horrible heart burn . 😞 It makes me think it’s not real Olive oil. I’ll purchase more of the water only. I’m hoping to lose 40 pounds. Full carnivore makes me eat too much and gaining weight.

Rebekah Heishman says to incorporate 1-2 days a week of PSMF week if you're fat adapted to keep your body in that fat burning weight loss mode. I've been doing a 3 day sardine fast every week. I lose several pounds but gain most of it back every time. I can feel the nutrients of the sardines helping my body. I've added strength training 3 days a week and changed from intermittent fasting to OMAD. Even if I'm not losing much my body is changing. I'm not hungry. The sardine fast does seem to reset my glucose levels every week and it feels good. I usually only have 3 cans a day but I love adding beef fat to my meal and a couple times a day. It keeps me well in ketosis and keeps me from being hungry throughout the fast.

This is coming from a kind heart and hopefully comes across that way in context…. Undereating is not Why people are not losing weight in my humble experience…coming from a background of binge/restrict eating… all of the movement running.. walking 25k steps daily … The fasting including sardine or Water makes you “think you’re satisfied “ on 3 cans of food but you’re mentally hungry as almost everyone with an ed background rebounds with extra appetite as soon as the fast is over … same thing for some on the lion diet… some of these keto/carnivore influences are exercising over 3-4 hours. A day… just my own experience that this is so mental hunger that causes major stress. Love you both however if you watch some videos on Ed recovery especially the famine study it explains it more. Lion diet creates issues too… I do eat carnivore as I feel it helps with me tal hunger which I’m still battling everyday. Maybe we are supposed to be in a body that’s a bit bigger than we think?

Nick Norwitz has mentioned that polyunsaturated fats are really good to create ketones (he was talking about strategies to be in ketosis while still eating some carbs for the lean mass hyperresponders). Fish oils are polyunsaturated fats, so I think that's the reason that sardine fasts are so helpful to enter deep states of ketosis. The problem with the polyunsaturated fats that most people eat is that they are the highly inflammatory chemically refined seed oils and not the natural oils of fish. It has been proven that fish oil in capsules does not have the health benefits of fish oil eaten while eating the whole fish probably because it's easy for it to become rancid when it's extracted. Dr Paul Mason has talked about fish capsules being rancid. I no longer have the need to lose weight, but I keep fish in my diet for qllowing me to keep lower glucose levels and higher ketone levels

People are nuts, I swear~ just want to gripe about something, find a label to slap on it, or degrade others in general. Pathetic is what that is, seriously. Would anything be said about my kid who loved canned tuna so much that's all he wanted to eat for a month? And yes, I do know it's high in mercury (not sardines!), but prior to that all he'd eat was mac & cheese~ of course I let him have tuna. What about those who eat salmon, scallops, crab & shrimp? No~ of course not, because it's fish!! Since when is eating fish disordered eating?? Shut thy trap ignorant trolls, errggghh. Good conversation ladies, appreciate your thoughts on these topics. Also look forward to hearing more about how your current approach is going, leaning out I mean. I gained back 5 lbs about 6 mo's after finally dropping 30~ which took 2 yrs btw,as I lost nothing the first 18 mo's. I'm still about 20lbs away from where I'd like to be. It's been super slow for me, but there's no turning back after feeling this good for this long~ no way. Our bodies are simple, yet weight loss can be more complex, & it's not always so cut & dried for many of us. That's okay, because we continue on in finding what works. What may need switched up, added to, etc. Pretty sure I slipped back into undereating again, so I'll be tracking for a bit, just so I can see any patterns or obvious blips. Have a great week everyone, & remember; "Kindness Can Change The World"🌎

I don’t think any one strategy can be considered disordered eating. If a sardine fast furthers your goals then great. But if any form of fasting is part of a binge/purge cycle then it is problematic. What is the point of your sardine fast? Was it to increase your Omega 3 profile? If so, isn’t including high Omega 3 foods on a regular and consistent basis better? If it is to lose weight then what was the result? Did you lose weight and keep at least some of it off or did you regain or regain plus more? If so then maybe you aren’t ready for fasting. Maybe your body wishes you would stop stressing about losing weight and nourish yourself until your body loses the weight effortlessly as a result of proper sleep, less stress, a good exercise regimen and a well-balanced carnivore diet? I have lost 130 pounds and have had stalls but trusted carnivore to get me where I should be. I eat high Omega 3 foods, eggs and all the wonderfully nutritious carnivore foods without fasting. I was patient and focused on building muscle and better blood tests. I don’t try to mess with the beauty of carnivore. I take great comfort in watching all these amazing folks like Dr Chaffee who just live simply the carnivore way.
