This is a good video because people don’t think about small things like candles or certain veggies/herbs or the littlest hazards. In fact I cleaned my bathroom with some kind of mint oil last week and instantly thought… what if the pigs can’t inhale this? So I turned on the vents, opened windows, and closed off the bathroom. ALWAYS better to be safe. The little guys depend on us! ❤

Oh my, I have tons and tons of fleece. I am the fleece queen! And my girls LOVE it. Everything I clean out of their cages, I use in my outdoor composite pile.

Great video! As someone already mentioned, piggies are sensitive and especially to smoke. I found this out when my neighbors were outside with their fire pits and Harriet was going nuts and I couldn't figure until i realized the strong smoke from the fire pits.Harriet is not a fan! I have to close the doors up to keep her safe.She is more sensitive to things than other pets would be and i am glad Scotty you brought this to our attention. I use fleece and I use a big hay container. Harriet tends to do most of her business in there. I spot clean every day, or every other day, it just depends where she concentrates and i use bedding under and it keeps it dry for the most part and what is wet, i spot clean, push over the dry and it will last five days. Fresh hay every day though. I never have a problem with a smell in her home.

Thanks so much for addressing this subject. I had purchased a skin care product from the Elemis line and applied it to my face then I went into my piggy room and both of my girls instantly ran into their hideys. I thought at first I had startled them but then I developed an almost instant upset stomach and the start of a headache. I realized the cream was so heavily scented with a strong fragrance of roses. I know the unpleasant scent was what they noticed before I did. The whole line of Elemis skin care products went back to the company for a refund. I never thought about piggies being bothered by skin care products until that happened.

Also, I think it's just not kind to expose your piggies to any kind of smell or smoke or such when they are sitting in their habitant and can't just walk away for clean air. Respect your pigs! 😊

Hi Scotty 🖐. BB spreading his wings! 😍 "Woo-hoo! I'm all better again"! 🕊 Made my day! He's Beautiful 😍. I paid a visit to a relative a few months ago and she had those plug-in things. WOW!! MY head was literally pounding within seconds! 🤕. I would Never subject my 3 Piggies to anything remotely Scented. I have 4 GuineaDad fleeces, I wash (2) alternately every 7-10 days) in Soda and 1 cup W/vinegar. My piggies are in a 5x3 c grid. They have a 'Hay barn' that runs 5 c length along the back wall. Underneath the (huge!😂) pile I use Aubiose Horse bedding to absorb the wet. Each evening while my piggies play I shake their fleece. I then take out the wet hay and Aubiose. Then add fresh Aubiose and Hay. Fleeces and Hideys put back, Hey Presto! 15 minutes, job done! 😂. Noooo Smell! 👃 My Neighbour often pops in for a cuppa and he's even said he doesn't get any nasty whiffs! 😂. I live in the UK 🇬🇧 and I buy my piggies hay from the......USA 🇺🇸! Your Hay is Beautiful, GREEN and soooo Sweet! I feel like I want to put some on my salad!!🤣. Our British hay is brown and often dusty! If I don't like it, my girls are not eating it! 🤮. Another really informative video! 😊 I totally agree about fleece bedding. That’s what we use here. I spot clean twice a day, change out their pee pads once a day. If any of the liners look grimy or feel wet to the touch, I replace them. Each liner gets replaced twice a week in the “living room and bedroom” sections of the cage and the kitchen gets switched out totally 3-4 times a week or it gets super smelly. I just got a small air purifier for their room and the air just seems so much better to breathe.

My guinea pigs back off when they smell freshly applied nail polish on my fingers. My girl will always search for pea flakes inbetween my fingers except when I applied nail polish less than 10 minutes ago. Then she takes a short sniff and pulls her head away. At that point I'm not able to smell nail polish anymore, but the piggies still do as their sense of smell is quite strong.

Brilliant video Scotty, thanks! I use fleece too, so much easier and quicker for me personally. I hear that white vinegar eliminates odours, so I mix some of this with water in a spray bottle and use it to wipe my enclosures before I put in clean fleece. I also add some white vinegar in with the load of washing to help clean the fleece. Happy Thanksgiving to you, BB and the piggies!

I'm stuck in a difficult situation. Snow knocked our power out last night, and the house is way too cold for my guinea pig to be comfortable. His cage is covered, but the room he was in was still cold. The warmest room we have right now has been burning candles for a while. We moved him in there, blew out the candles, and covered them to keep smoke at a minimum. It's not ideal, but I think he's ok for tonight. It's tough because the rest of the house is in low 50s and dropping... ugh.

Hey there BB!! I am so glad that you are feeling better. My one girl Frosty cannot be anywhere near candles or scents etc. I am worried about our fireplace this winter. We use it all Winter long. Any ideas???? Again, welcome back BB and thank Scotty for being a great pet owner.

You can use an air purifier near them, but if your flu is working properly you shouldn't be getting much smoke in the house.

A good idea to stop the cage smelling, which has worked for me, is to have a sort of "litterbox" in one corner of the cage which I put shavings in and most of the time the piggies will pee in that. I change it every evening but it only takes a few mins and it means that whilst the mats and pads still need to be shaken out daily, they only need changed a couple of times a week and the fleece once. I thinks it works best if the piggies are babies/young when you start this though because I recently got a third rescue piggie who is about 2 and a half and he just lays down in the shavings but pees anywhere else!! 🤣 Also, don't try it if the cage is small because it does cut off a corner for running about - mine is a C&C 2x5 so I wouldn't do it in anything much smaller.

I have been using kiln dried pine for 3 years now. I have 2 girls and I literally have to scoop several areas of their cage every night it’s so saturated with urine. Is that normal when they get older? I only had to do a little spot cleaning in a week . I’m going thru 2 full bags of shavings a week now. They were about 6 months when I got them 3 years ago this month. So they’re 3 &1/2 years old according to the rescue where I got them. I did try a cheap brand of fleece and after 24 hours it stunk awful! I sent it back and went back to shavings. We have a jumbo C&C cage. So it’s hard to find fleece that fits it.

I gave up my candle obsession for my piggies! I spot clean everyday, clean the coroplast with a mixture of white vinegar and water. I replace any soiled fleece pads daily, change litter tray & replenish hay numerous times a day . I use reversible fleece liners, they ladt much longer than ordinary fleece liners, cut down on thevwashing a bit! White vinegar ( quarter of a cup a load) helps with any lingeringbsmells & softens the fleeces too.

I love candles. I have a lot but I won’t burn them because I have a Guinea pig who is prone to respiratory problems. There are certain candles that will give me a migraine immediately. That is why I quit. If it isn’t good for me, then it’s not good for my piggies.

No-one should buy palm oil candles Scotty! I've seen devastating burns on primates, where companies have deforested the land for it. It's in food and so many products! #NoPalmOil
