Are Science and Faith at Odds? | Aquinas 101: Science & Faith Launch Q&A - Fr. Dominic Legge, Prof. Karin Öberg, & Fr. Jordan Schmidt

Join the Thomistic Institute for an online launch event for Aquinas 101: Science and Faith. Watch the premiere of the series’ trailer, then asks questions to the series’ creators.
Are miracles possible according to science? How should we interpret Genesis? What are the benefits and limitations of the scientific method?
Fr. Dominic Legge, O.P., director of the Thomistic Institute, will discuss these topics and more with Prof. Karin Öberg, a professor of astronomy at Harvard University, and Fr. Jordan Schmidt, O.P., assistant professor of sacred scripture at the Dominican House of Studies. They will then answer questions from the online audience. Bring your questions!
Aquinas 101: Science and Faith, which launches Tuesday, March 16, seeks to dispel the notion that scientific learning and Christian belief are incompatible with each other. The videos, created by an expert team of scientists, theologians, and philosophers, will explore themes, theories, and misconceptions that have proven especially thorny in the history of science and religion.
Topics covered by the series will include: neuroscience, miracles, quantum mechanics, the book of Genesis, evolution, the scientific method, the “theory of everything,” Schrödinger’s cat, free will, artificial intelligence, and transhumanism, among many others.

There is a Roman Catholic gentleman who is a mathematician, physicist, philosopher of science, and metaphysician by the name of Wolfgang Smith. He has what I find to be a wonderful contribution to this conversation, which agrees, at the very least, with the general idea here that science and faith do not conflict at all. I'm wondering why my previous comment with a link to an interview with him was deleted.

I find it so cool seeing actual scientists becoming priests or monks (or nuns). And they can explain the World from both a religious and a scientific view, showing how both are two sides of the same coin!

Very good presentation, particularly the short discussion about miracles. Miracles, like all truthfully described events, are a source of wonder and to point to inestimable power. As Gerard Manley Hopkins put it- “the world is charged with the grandeur of god. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil”

Jasper except for committed solipsists who believe in nothing but themselves and therefore think they are the pure creators, creation is obvious and given. Thus a creator is needed for PSR to be satisfied. Evolutionary theories are speculative and subject to revision. The ID people’s arguments and the history of science shows this. Thus my suggestion is that the surest guide is through metaphysics. As far as I can make it out, evolutionary biology is a confection of fantastical story telling about some long ago events. Humility and truthful enquire should be the touch stones instead. Kind regards

Fr. Legge, I have a question from the beginning of this video: Under what conditions do you wear your black -- I'm calling it a top coat because I don't know the name -- and when do you not. In almost every Aquinas 101 video you are wearing it but not as often when doing these live streams. Thank you.

I'd define the law of non-contradiction the way Aristotle did. Aristotle teaches us that nothing can be and not be in the same respect at the same time. If you define it the way Father defined it, the liar's paradox can still cause trouble. To see the liar's paradox, think about what sentences 1-2 mean. 1. I'm lying now. 2. What this sentence says is false. The problem is that a liar statement is true if and only if it's false.

Some good points, but there are some far deeper truths missed by this discussion. Genesis 1-3 occurred in Heaven (including the "Garden" of Heaven), which is outside of space-time. Thus, sequence and duration are meaningless concepts. Time did not exist until until God *_"rested."_* Responsibility is the "Light Switch" of creation. Give up responsibility (awareness or "light") and something persists; take back responsibility or give your awareness and you are set free from it, because you have removed the time dimension from it. The Universe was perfect at the instant of creation (singularity). that is what the physics tell us.
@jaspermay5813
@jaspermay5813 3 жыл бұрын
That's not what actual physics tells us. The singularity is the absurdity that secularist physicists' selective and unscientific interpretation and extrapolation of physical data leads to. Also, you say this apparently to make the point that Genesis basically says the same thing. Anyone who reads it can see that it doesn't. Do you believe that Adam passed away at the age of 930? What do secularist 'physicists' say about that? Do you believe that Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead? Etc.

@@jaspermay5813 yes yes and yes ....you forget that God is outside space and time ...Since He created it ....also with God there is no past or future but only present ....we have a past present and future .....and our knowledge / minds are so very limited compared to the omniscient God . Yes Moses did live into his 900s as did most humans during his era ....as God had decreed 1000 to be the age around which most humans would die ....and then God lessened the age to 100 ....it's all in the bible ....

@@chommie5350 How am I forgetting anything? I'm defending the Bible. It seems you are defending deep time ('billions of years') in some way. If you're not, then we're misunderstanding each other. It's precisely because our minds and knowledge are so limited compared to God, that we should trust Him when He tells us exactly how He created in the book of Genesis.

I totally believe in the Biblical Creation. To contradict this is doubting that God has limitations. God can do anything, and He taught Creation in 6 days. Their so-called "education" is getting in their way of total trust in God, and they are pandering to atheists.

Not necessarily, evolution doesn't mean God can't do something, its saying he didn't. Sola scriptura is not good and we should remember that science and faith do not compete, they are intertwined under God. God explains the why, science explains the how.

I'm so sorry about that. My older brother has a handicap too and it is difficult to get him to wear one. We find ways to deal. Fortunately, our Archdiocese encourages but does not require masks. We've both already had the virus, and he's been vaccinated already (I had to miss my appointment). At least he can still go to church with me. And we can still go for walks and to relatives' houses, and to a couple places, but it is tough. I pray for you.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Wearing masks is a cult now everywhere, and I am so grateful that my church allows me to not wear a mask if I so chose. The priests have made a point of giving us this free choice, and so my church is probably the only public place where I can breathe normally, and where people won't scold you for not wearing a mask (or for wearing one, because both choices are respected by everyone). I go to the TLM exclusively, btw, and I find that people who go to the TLM are much more open-minded than people from my Novus Ordo home parish where they will scream and yell at you for taking your mask off for even one second.

Please invite Hugh Owen to give the evidence for the traditional Catholic view on Creation and the book of Genesis, and to try to get through to you and Mrs. Öberg. She probably has a detailed knowledge and understanding of observational astronomy, but her historical conclusions are disastrous. I simply fail to see how any honest person could say that the book of Genesis is at all compatible with the secularist origins myth. "In the beginning God created the heavens AND THE EARTH." - i.e. the Earth was not made _thousands of thousands of thousands_ of years _after_ the beginning, or supposedly two-thirds of the way (!) into the alleged age of the universe. The stars were created on the fourth day, i.e. _after_ the Earth had already been created on the first day, and _after_ it had "brought forth the green herb, and the tree that beareth fruit" on the third day. There was no rain before the creation of Adam, and no death before Adam's sin. How can anyone 'interpret' all of this, and more, to 'actually mean' the exact opposite? My questions to you and Mrs. Öberg are: do you believe that Adam lived to be 930 years old (Genesis 5:5), Seth 912 years (Gen. 5:8), Enos 905 (Gen. 5:11), etc.? Do you believe that the Lord of all creation incarnated on this little Earth of ours? Do you believe He was born of a Virgin, performed great miracles and resurrected from the dead? What is the difference between denying 'Special' ('Young') Creation (i.e. the traditional Catholic doctrine on Creation) for supposedly scientific reasons, and denying all these other things? Please watch these videos by VaticanCatholic.com: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJqwoq2ElL6Gjrc Amazing Evidence For God - Scientific Evidence For God, kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoq2noloe9F7etk Information Proves God, kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6rTgqRperNsfa8 DO YOU BELIEVE ?.

Jasper I think the answer to the problem might lie in the contingency of the scientific theories of origins you allude to, plus the humility that ought accompany our limited knowledge of science and the revealed truth in the bible. Kindest regards

@@patricksee10 Hi, I'm afraid I don't quite follow you. Are you calling creationism or evolutionism contingent? What do you mean by that? Do you expect evolutionists to be as humble as you expect creationists to be? Is it really your experience that evolutionists are humble with respect to 'young Earth' creationism?
