I’m using the Skil 12v tools as homeowner and car repair and they handle everything I need. The batteries charge fast. The 12v reciprocating saw is a tiny, smooth, beast with the right blades. Loving it.

I just bought skil 5 1/2 circular saw,brushless. I chose brushless because I saw video comparing to brushed version and the brushless did not bog down .I also see on the box-5 year warranty

So just in the last year I discovered what a steal these new Skil "PWRCore" tools are. These are by far the best power tools for the money. I don't know a lot about the cheaper brushed options, but their "PWRCore" brushless 20v line is competitive with the premium lineup from any of the major power tool brands for less money. Some of their brushless kits are less than half the cost of competing brand kits. You can get some of the brushless 20v tools for around the same price as competing brand brushed models. They have sleepers too. I have the PWRCore 20 rear handle brushless circular saw and it is an absolute beast with some clever design features. It came with a dual battery charger and 2 5Ah 20v batteries. I can work all day on just those batteries in that thing. Skil WAS a cheapo brand for a while when Bosch owned it. They contracted with cheap manufacturers in China and churned out bargain bin quality tools with the skil name. Ironically a Chinese company bought the brand from Bosch and they have just recently turned it back into a premium brand. But many people don't know about it and probably associate skil with the Bosch-owned crap that was churned out for years. Unfortunately the new company also chose to make cheaper versions so people still get the sense that it's a bargain bin brand because their cheapest products aren't that great still. But their premium "PWRCore" are actually very good and as of right now, a steal if you're looking to move to jump ship. They don't have quite the selection of some other brands yet, but they have all the mainline tools - drills, drivers, saws, accessories etc. Their 20v system with brushless is legit. Batteries last longer than most competitors, tools have tons of power and design/quality is great for the most part. I ended up selling my Ryobi tools after I bought the circular saw and bought the 6 tool 20v brushless combo. That came with another 2 batteries and another charger. I then got the brushless impact driver and the jigsaw which both came with chargers and batteries. Now I have a full set of mainline Skil 20v brushless tools and it all cost me like $200 more than I had paid for Ryobi brushed tools plus I added a beast of a circular saw and now 6 batteries and 5 chargers. I only had a 1.5Ah and 4Ah Ryobi batteries. It was actually around the same cost for me to jump ship entirely to Skil brushless, add a new top-notch circular and get several batteries and chargers than it would have been just to get a few more Ryobi batteries.

First off, thanks for all of your in depth reviews, very helpful. As for the question, I have found SKIL tools to be good considering what you get for the money. However, I bought the 10" sliding miter saw 5 months ago and recently had a shop incident (no fault of SKIL) and broke the blade guard. Tried to order a new one through SKIL's parts distributors as directed by SKIL for going on 2 months now. Nobody has the part nor can they get one. Contacted SKIL's customer service several times and they keep telling me it's on order, and have no idea as to when one might be available. I reluctantly and carefully use the saw but can't let anyone else touch it for fear of an injury, and don't want to sell it for the same reason, and possible liability. Had I known SKIL cannot fulfill a part order, I would have paid the price for the Dewalt saw as that company has been in my experience excellent as far as customer service. So, my experience rates SKIL as just another lower priced throw away tool company since that cannot fulfill a part order. Don't enjoy giving a negative review, but SKIL has had almost 2 months to deal with this, as Dewalt had a new router at my house in 2 days when I had an issue. BIG difference. You get what you pay for.

I've never had or used the skil tools before but I just want to point out that I have a Milwaukee fuel gen 3 hammer drill and it also has a garbage chuck that you have to constantly re-tighten or the bits fall out. Another issue I have with it and the fuel impact driver is every so often they will just stop working and you have to take the battery off and put it back on to get the tool to work again. I know this video is about skil tools not Milwaukee but I just wanted to point out that the high dollar stuff can have super annoying flaws as well. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to make a great video and helping people make better informed purchasing decisions.

Thanks for the comment Mitchel! I’ve had shockingly good luck with Milwaukee for the past 20 years or so but definitely nothings perfect. My M18 Fuel circ saw had to be sent back for repair and has always been underpowered. It’s the only sorta bad Milwaukee tool I’ve bought. On the other hand I reviewed Skils 2x20V circular saw last week and it was crazy good! You never know what will be good till you check it out. Thanks for watching!

I use Dewalt everyday forty hours a week, and I’m feeling the same. Why should we keep paying top dollar for tools that have problems? Hence, why I’m looking into more reasonably priced tools like SKIL right now.

The Fuel "Surge" impact driver is really terrible. It sounds and feels amazing, and it's very quiet. But I've had 2 of them fail like clockwork, once exposed to dust and moisture, the electronics burn out. Then you have constant weird glitches, it's basically a horrible low quality tool. I've never left any tools in the rain, for any reason. But 2 of the M18 "Surge" impact drivers have glitchy electronics. My other 3rd impact driver at work, an M18, wouldn't go into reverse the other day, and it caused me to accidentally run a bit through a wall. I notice my M18 drill which has been pampered indoors, it has a sticky trigger where you can hear it hissing until you snap the trigger a few times to get it to shut off completely. Milwaukee saws, if you look up the reviews, many of them just die for no reason and won't even turn on. I bought a new Milwaukee circular saw, and tried 2 of them, but both are defective with a misaligned foot plate (shoe) that is .020" out of parallel alignment, so I had to buy Flex instead, and the Flex saws (both that I purchased) are absolutely perfect with perfect alignment out of the box.

Same issue with my fuel impact. I'm a handyman and was finishing a job up later at night when it started happening, took 2-3x as long to get finished up because of it. Kept being inconsistent regardless of taking the battery out and in. Only happened a time or two since then, so no clue what it is, but I haven't used it a ton. Still rocking my older Ridgid as a daily driver. I got the fuel oscillating tool/ impact kit because it was on a great deal, but really just wanted he oscillating tool, and still debating on whether or not to sell the impact. The fuel oscillating tool is a beast though, love it. The skil has some pros on their brushless 20v one that the fuel doesn't, like much simpler blade change, but the fuel cuts a good bit more quickly.

I bought this set when it was on sale at Rural King for around 130. Now it is listed around 91 bucks. Really great value, I’ve enjoyed the impact driver light and reciprocating saw. Have not had a chance to use the drill very much.

You’re suppose to turn the chuck the opposite direction to lock it after tightening.

I like these skil tools also the more expensive skil saw stuff. I mostly run makita and a touch of dewalt. At work they provided Milwaukee.

I have six different Skil 20v tools and none of them experienced a trigger problem. I’m a dyi’r and I did get all the brushless tools which might be a little better quality. Hands down the best cheap power tools to me and the batteries come with every tools so I have like 8 batteries now for way less money than DEWALT or whatever just to sit there and not use like they were intended to. If I had to do it all over again, I’d still get the skil. But that’s me.

Growing up in Alaska in the 1970's, I remember seeing Skil tools being used alot. The brand was very popular, and across the board, their products were built tough back then. Over the years, I suppose the construction, etc. are made with cheaper imported parts. Nevertheless, the tools are decent for general home projects. I'm sure they have a line for more heavy duty jobs.

I have Skil 3010 drill (the cheap one) and i looks like the one you have there otherwise but mine has a metall chuck and the switch is smooth. I don't if this is a US -> Europe thing (I'm i Finland). I have used is as 2:nd drill to the Skil 3071. Never had a problem with the 3010...and have used it for years.

Appreciate the vid. I’m in the dyi demographic and not tradesman. If someone wants to buy high end tools that get used occasionally that’s fine but just not for me. I have a set of craftsman v20 brushed that I use on a as needed basis. Have worked absolutely fine. It’s just down to what one wants to invest in.

I took a look at my skil drill and I could not find that my bit gets loos or the dead spot on the trigger so my drill works fine maybe qualetie control is better in europe

Brushed motor tools are great for light duty finish work where too much power and weight can be a hassle to deal with for long periods of time.

Yeah...I just returned some Porter Cable junk. Their 1/2" impact wrench was so feeble it couldn't loosen nuts torqued to 100ft/lbs. Their sawzall was good,,,I guess it's easy to make a good sawzall- but just like the Skil, their drills (including their hammer drill) was junk. Now I don't mind spending the extra money and getting DeWalt. Tools are not the place to try and save a few bucks, folks. If you do anything more than the most basic homeowner stuff, just get the good stuff, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

I agree. These old Skil brushed tools are for hanging pictures and that’s about it. A seldom used M12 drill will last for decades and it’s still good to fix a deck if needed. Thanks for watching!

@@ProjectsForAllReviews Funny thing is, I built my 22x25 garage with some ancient Crapsman 19.2V tools that had cost like $200 for the set. They got the job done, but man, I wish I had had these DeWalt tools then, as the job literally would've been 5x faster, and a lot more enjoyable. You don't realize the difference between good vs. bad tools so much until you've used both...but it's night and day. Great vid, by-the-way.

You said everything anybody needs to know in the first few minutes of the video. I'm a contractor, you definitely do not want to buy a cheap set of power tools for production. You're going to be disappointed sooner than later. I've owned porter cable, craftsman, dewalt and skil. Skils barrings in the circular saws are junk, even the corded saws, causing the blade to walk in and out making precision cuts unlikely. Porter cable set burned up, craftsman is ok but doesn't hold up as well as dewalt, there is a reason dewalt is so expensive, it's quality. I've actually gone back to corded tools. I hate batteries.

I been in construction since the 80s. I agree with you mostly, but I’m feeling like dewalt and me are about to part ways. I still love their saws, but I’ve been having issues with a lot of their other tools one of my impacts has a loose collet. My grinder has switch problems. I’m getting annoyed with paying top dollar to get annoyed. Have you noticed any of this with Dewalt for the past few years?

Thats not how you tighten a chuck. You have to hand tighten, then back out 1 click.

ABS plastic is not all its cracked up to be. It's bad at impact. The best plastic is for tools is PA6-30. Nylon with 30% glass fiber.

Agreed. I don’t think I said it clearly but i meant it seemed like decent plastic and better than ABS. The nice DeWALT table saw I just reviewed had a ridiculously cheap abs miter gauge. Abs has its place but not in pro tools. Thanks for the comment!

@@charlschuck6 Hello! That M12 set is excellent. I just looked and it’s on sale for 179 for drill and driver with 2.0 and 4.0 batteries. If your in the market now go buy that quick. You won’t regret it. As for the Skil the drill chuck and clutch were total junk. The impact was 1 speed and had enough power but all the tools had bad crunchy switches. I’ll grab a big set of they’re brushless more “pro” tools soon to test but don’t get the set I had. Usually Id resell after the vid but that set got returned. Thanks for watching!
