Are Solos Still Important in Today's Metal?

I think that guitarists like solos because they inspire guitar playing. When I was a kid listening to Nirvana I didn't care about playing guitar, but when I heard Megadeth - that was a game changer! So I am not into solos because I am a guitarist, but I am a guitarist because I love solos.

As a lead guitar not all songs need solo and if your in a bar band the solo add to the show Especially if you go out to the crowd and play to the crowd

As far as metal goes, it's not a necessity, some songs genuinely don't need them. Regardless of genre, soloing just for the sake of it is at best boring as fuck. It's not common but it does irk me where there's a section that could've used a solo, and it's absent for whatever reason, I will admit.

I like thick fat ass riffs better than solos but I think I'm impartial for solos, I dont mind if they're in a track or not, if there is a solo though make sure it's worth listening to, I think solos are more relevant to 80s/90s metal but some of the solos coming out from these deathcore bands are sick as fuck

More often than not, the lead guitarist isn't writing the song, so it's up to the band if they want a solo. Opinions matter bc you have to understand if a solo fits or if it's not worth it. Have you ever been in a band with tons of egos before? I have and trust that opinions matter more than you think.

Been in several bands. Thrash prog. Have CD’s out there. Yes people with egos. All musicians have egos. Especially singers with LSD. Lead singer disease. Most depends on what the band is trying to achieve. Look at Nirvana. Dude could barely play guitar 🤷‍♂️ They made millions. Try and imagine any of the 80’s bands without leads. Or 90’s like Pantera. IMO if the rhythm sucks I don’t care how good the lead player is cause 95% of the song is rhythm bro. 😎

You have to play for the song and I prefer a solo that sticks in my head and is not there just to impress. Linguine Malsteen's solos are useless since they don't stick with you. But a Randy Rhoads solo? You're humming that for days!

I think they are important if they lend themselves to the song well, and add something more. Mindlessly shredding is just as boring as a band that only knows power chords. That is an over generalization, but I think most people know what I mean.

I'd say solos are not important but can add a lot of depth to a song Something about the blend of beauty and brutality or even sadness to drive that final breakdown home So it depends on the song/genre IMO I can't imagine Blinded by Fear from At The Gates without the little lead section And I can't imagine a solo making I Will Be Heard by Hatebreed any better As a student of the game I definitely want to learn how to solo but am definitely more concerned with causing bodies to collide

I think a better question is to ask bands how important are solos. Asking a soloist is a bit biased but a cumulative prospective from an entire band with five members will give a better answer overall. Ask a bunch of lead guitarists and they'll all beat off to each other's leads.

back in early 90s when i played leads , i tried throw solos in everywhere.. now im older and arthritis in hands i play rythm only .. but what i think now if the solo adds depth to the melody and not just speed sweaping scales .. been way too much that from like 75'-2000 other wise keep it short

I was in a band for 10 years. I was 38 when I joined that band as lead guitarist and solos were recommended lol. Now that I’m 49, I think my arthritis kicks in much faster lol. So I don’t play solos anymore, I play what’s called “licks” and “breakdowns”. No more solos for this guy lol

I think solos can still be relevant if they tell a story. Randy Rhoads, Gary Moore, and Jimmy Page were good examples of writing guitar solos that serve the song well. I myself follow that mantra with my solos. I try NOT to be a self indulgent puñeta.

I'd say yes. As it rounds you up as a more versatile/complete player. Now if you want to solo or not, all up to you! But look at a band like Hatebreed.... full force riffing attack. But a melodic solo and not a wank fest, sticks in your head. But from certain players, I expect a solo... guys like Doug Aldrich, Jason Frankhouser, John Sykes not getting solo's from these guys is like something is missing. But like you, i've always been a rhythm guy...
