While I would love to see Valve explore the Steam Machine concept again, I think Valve needs to further iterate SteamOS first. While SteamOS 3.4.x is undeniably better than the original SteamOS, and some of the complaints in this video were addressed, some of them have not been. I think a big part of why the Steam Deck is proving to be more successful than the Steam Machine is because the hardware gimmick (I say with all due love) sufficiently differentiates itself from a normal console and normal PC and thus justifies itself more because of it. At this stage I think Valve should focus on the Steam Deck and getting its teething issues ironed out. Once they do that (most likely by the second iteration of the Steam Deck) then I think the stage will be set to revisit the Steam Machine.

Given the obvious comparisons between the Steam Deck and the Switch, the Steam Machine was basically Valve's Wii U. At a glance, I think one of the issues about the Steam Machine was that it appealed to a niche that didn't really exist. The user experience looks unpolished compared to a more traditional console and given that Proton didn't exist yet the amount of Steam games you could even run on this thing would have been much more limited, something not everyone might realize. Given the success of the Steam Deck I wonder if Valve will give the Steam Machine idea another try.

@@EpicB I hear their next product is going to be another vr headset, this time to compete with meta quest. As for steam machine, I think that's what the upcoming dock is supposed to address, similar to how the nintendo switch utilises a dock to turn from a handheld prtable into a tv console. After all, from using a cheapo usb hub to output to a tv, the UI definitely scales appropraitely and works well as a console for me, but is defenitely a messy solution for now.

God, I remember buying the windows version of the Alpha back in 2014/2015. I had just started my new post high school job at Walmart and was getting way more hours. I saw this little machine at my store for $400 or so, and went with my girlfriend at the time to spend my whole check on it. My parents were out of town so I she was staying at my house and I remember her falling asleep on the couch while I was playing with my first ever gaming capable PC. That weekend and beyond facilitated a lot of PC gaming fun, and I held onto that thing for years. It was so compact I could take it anywhere with a screen (and frequently did) and I even had my first VR experiences on it (luckily low frame rates don't make me motion sick). I had so many good memories with this thing. It kills me that I sold it to help pay for my current build. I wish I had kept that little box of memories. It wasn't just an underpowered gaming PC to me, it represents some of the best memories I have to this day. I'll never forget you Alienware Alpha.

The limitations when it comes to non-gaming functions is an interesting, and often forgotten, point. Gaming consoles are used for much more than just gaming nowadays; they are essentially all in one entertainment systems. Frankly the fact that Steam OS doesn't support apps such as Netflix is a major detractor, especially if it's trying to compete with Sony or Microsoft.
@Kart33339 жыл бұрын
+Peter Tutykhin Is non-gaming functions that important? Xbox One has much more function than a PS4 and sold a lot less! If people want to watch netflix on a TV they already have a smartTV, chromecast, setup box or a console that support it. I understand that convenience is the best way to keep the consumer in one platform but for a gaming system i don't think it's important

"SteamOS has NOTHING that doesn't run on the core Steam client" - while I see where you're coming from w/ the Halo and Xbox example, one of the core tenets of PC gaming is that we don't want platform exclusives. SteamBox is the opposite - ANYTHING can run on PC and now a console (well, as support develops). A SteamBox exclusive would be HUGELY polarizing and problemmatic for the community. The rest of the points are decent.

Looking back at the whole Steam Machine concept with hindsight, there was definitely potential. But the hardware & software just weren't there yet. 1: Game compatibility with Linux was lackluster aside from various indie games, and the Linux ports that did exist were notoriously buggy. 2. The Steam Controller itself was incredibly powerful and versatile, especially for FPS & Strategy games! But the lack of a 2nd joystick proper d-pad killed it for mainstream gamers. Steam Input later added support for Playstation and Nintendo controllers so that gamers could use the touchpads of the DualShock 4 & Dualsense and the gyroscope on the Switch controllers. 3. The Steam Deck learned from the mistakes of the Steam Machines. Steam Input later added support for Playstation and Nintendo controllers so that gamers could use the touchpads of the DualShock 4 & Dualsense and the gyroscope on the Switch controllers. Valve even solved the Linux compatibility dilemma with the Proton compatibility layer, overhauled their Big Picture UI, and it's been leaked that they're are working on a standalone Deck controller for release sometime in 2025. I'm really excited and hopeful that Steam Machines can succeed again.

I think this review is rather out of date. Both of the bugs mentioned by Linus - the keyboard issue and the library search issue - have already been fixed. I think it is unfair to review a product running beta testing software without making allowance for that. The real question is would a customer purchasing the product today experience these problems? As far as I can see they wouldn't so what's the point in mentioning them?
@GunslingerKenung9 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Bingham Well that's like saying when you bought your car from the dealership and as soon as you drove it off the lot the tires wobbled, the steering wheel went far left and only one windshield wiper worked. Sure, when you then took it back and they fixed the car you no longer have those problems but having those problems should still be mentioned. For the audience these consoles are aimed at the problems it had would be a huge turn off. Most console people want their console to turn on and dive into their games if they want to browse games they can play they want to easily see that. The review is of where steam said OK our product ready for review. You can't then be like JK wait let us fix those problems first. Also that's OS's for you they change,update and adapt quickly and info tends to get outdated.
@Stephen.Bingham9 жыл бұрын
+Kensung I don't think you have understood the situation. Valve/Dell sent out review units of these machines weeks ago. I presume that Linus received one of these. They were running a beta-testing version of the system software - SteamOS. The final version of SteamOS was only released a few days before they were made available to the general public - about 7 days ago. Is it not obvious that beta-testing software will have a few bugs? That's the whole point of a beta-testing programme. What's important is whether or not the customers who actually buy these devices will experience these problems. If the bugs have been fixed, why should anyone care?
@TheNnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkk9 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Bingham well then blame valve and dell for releasing review units with unfinished software, what was Linus to do, sit on his hands until the final software relase....
@Stephen.Bingham9 жыл бұрын
+Pedro Bretones, it is perfectly normal for companies to release "preview" versions of tech items for review. Other reviewers seemed to have no difficulty understanding that this was beta software. I believe that it is normal for companies to provide briefing notes for the reviewers. Perhaps Linus simply didn't read them.
@deenycest107109 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Bingham You have a point. If that was the case, perhaps Linus should have mentioned it in the review. He did not. Maybe Linus is anti valve or Linux? I think not. Are there any reviews out there with the "final" and fixed version of steam os? If so, have other problems like user experience issues, specifically exclusive content been addressed? And for the money, will I be able to use this as a pc? How difficult is the learning curve if that is the case? Because to move a pc into the living room and provide a console experience, it should be a seamless straight forward process to access any and all features. Otherwise, why did valve even vie for the living room space? Is there another agenda here? Or two? Please for the love of all that is good, explain this to me!

Fantastic HTPC though, better than streaming games, access to my steam library, tiny form factor, older games and less demanding indie games run fine.

While I agree that SteamOS would definitely get more adoption with an exclusive title, it would be a shot in the hand for Valve to do this since they wouldn't sell nearly as many games or products and thus wouldn't recoup development costs. It seems to me that Valve should take hold of Linux's open potential and allow developers and users alike use it in some way that they can't use Windows. They could possibly fork the Steam client for Linux to take advantage of its features, such as cgroups, to make it faster than its Windows variant. Tight integration with Wayland and efficient use of Vulkan would also improve performance. If Valve can update SteamOS in this way, it's possible that they and Dell can make the Alienware steam machine competitive with other consoles for the duration of its lifespan.

I ALMOST hit the dislike button because for a second I thought you were advocating platform-specific titles. Rant: After running a Hackintosh for several years with MORE than adequate hardware (i7 CPU, 32GB RAM, SSD, and Nvidia Geforce starting out - built over 3 years ago), it's the platform specific titles that really hurt my Mac gaming experience when there really wasn't a need for it. Even Linux gaming (thus SteamOS) has been hindered by Windows-only titles (due to DirectX I presume); while still being available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One - or Playstation 3/4. We really need to get past all this platform-specific nonsense. Game developers need to realize that there would actually be MORE sales if they just made the title available for ALL consumers - regardless of platform.

It's easier to do if it's built from the ground up using OpenGL rather than DirectX.
@marioprawirosudiro73016 жыл бұрын
And get less performance? OpenGL might be easier to use, compared to DirectX, but in their latest iterations, DX is simply faster. This wouldn't matter to most smaller indie game studios of course, but bigger studios that make AAA titles would want that extra performance. The future of Linux gaming is Vulkan, not OpenGL. It is open, and it can actually compete with DX12 in performance.

Until game developers stop using DirectX and start using OpenGL instead, Linux will *never* be a platform that can be used for premium games. DirectX will always be the preferred engine of choice, either because that's what the game developers are used to using, are lazy, or are too stubborn to change. They aren't realising that Linux is becoming a much better place for gaming these days. The fact that OpenGL works on both Linux AND Windows confuses me as to why game developers aren't making the switch already. Unless there's some kind of influence or financial reward that they get for building using DX...who knows. The games that do run on Linux though (I use Linux exclusively now, but still have to maintain a Windows install for those games that don't work under Linux) are really good, work really well, and granted that NVIDIA's closed-source drivers are a bit flaky and all over the place (and AMD's are even worse), once this gets sorted out (which I'm also hoping that with Valve shipping Steam Machines using said NVIDIA chips will influence the NV developers to sort this out), Linux will be a top notch gaming experience like Windows which has dominated the PC gaming market for so long. Then, and only then, will gaming under Linux, and devices running SteamOS, have a good place in the gaming market. Until then, this machine's price tag is so far over the top for something that won't play the latest titles, something that most people buying this will want to be able to do.

+Dan Jones OpenGL will soon support directx emulation, and they have always competed with eachother for features, each one adding the features that the other comes out with first. Keep in mind OpenGL has been around a LOT longer than directx and works on every platform you can think of. Hello, iOS, Android, what do u think they use? directx? i don't think so.
@djinnsmith64079 жыл бұрын
+iTzPrime thank you Microsoft employee for telling me that directX is better. In 5 years no one will use Directx because direct X only works on Windows while OpenGL works on every platform imaginable.
@dannosaur79 жыл бұрын
+saiyate If OpenGL gets a working DX emulation then this would be a *massive* step forward for those running Linux. Or hell, even OSX. Even if the games weren't natively built for Linux, I've heard of a few random success stories of people trying to coerce Windows games to run under Linux using Wine (I myself lack the time and patience to try this out, but I think if you fiddle around with it enough, you can get GTA V working in Linux). If OpenGL can figure this all out, and keep on top of the new DX releases, this entire argument goes away more or less as it becomes irrelevant what operating system you're using.

Big picture mode is still not fleshed out enough and has many bugs that even steam fans don't like Big Picture Mode.

You just recommended buying a windows license in a review of Steam OS, I think you miss the point. Linux is a better OS, its open source, more secure, mostly free, fast, more customizable and not controlled by a big corporation, but big companies do not develop for it. Why? Because people like you do not even give it a chance because more software currently works with Windows. How are developers meant to be encouraged to make more software and games for Linux when there are people like you who do not even give it a chance.
@seaman78athome9 жыл бұрын
Jade ok More developers don't develop for Linux because it isn't a better OS. It is just another OS, and one that's a lot less user friendly to those who do not use Linux on daily basis. Yes, you can make it act and feel like Windows or Mac but the most useful features are accessible only in shell which resembles DOS more than any other OS. While that's great for some people, it isn't to a huge majority. As far as your comment regarding big corporations, those donate a lot to the open source community, they help it thrive so don't assume that just because a corporation is big that it should be hated. And on the topic of open source, it has it's down sides too, like getting support for a problem may take a LOT longer than when you are dealing with a big corporation. As far as your security comment goes, while true somewhat, no OS is full proof. Both Windows and Mac OS(Linux based) have gotten better at security. I remember the days when Mac community claimed to be unhackable...turns out they were just as susceptible as the other guys.

@venim11039 жыл бұрын
I have to agree on that the SteamOS itself is pretty flawed BUT I disagree with having a Linux as a gaming OS being flawed! I haven't owned Windows for over 8 years now and I built a new Linux gaming computer (with gtx 970, core i5 k..) for myself this year and I can't express how awesome it is to play games easily and fast (after some configuration though, but hey, that's Linux)! I did go and try my friends "beast" machine (gtx 980, core i7) and I just couldn't understand why he wants to use an OS that uses more than half of his 16gb RAM on background OS processes and then have like hundred of different virus clearing/preventing software running somewhere underneath (+ a 200$ more expensive OS that you need to update and pay more every single update) losing about 20% of performance he could have on an optimized Linux platform?! I mean I get it, Linux is not for casuals (unless you have used it since you were a kid and got used to it.. I mean if people wouldn't have been used to using Windows already for a long time, I think that from a fresh start point of view many Linux environments are actually more user friendly). But for serious gamers (and graphic artists, coders etc..) that want to squeeze all the performance they can get and tinker their systems to the fullest, Linux is the way to go!
@MineCraftFul9 жыл бұрын
Then you realize that gpu compute performance on nvidia and amd cards is 20-50% (depending on the game) WORSE on Linux. RIP that whole argument.
@venim11039 жыл бұрын
Well I don't know where you got those numbers from but I have never seen any results on any kind of test where Linux performed so much worse to Windows on GPU front.. I mean they mostly work about the same on that front. www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=win10-nv-ubu1504&num=5 Here's one article I found with a fast google search (and also bear in mind that the platform they use is Ubuntu Linux which is by far not very optimized environment for gaming, compared to a fully ground up build Linux kernel with only necessary components and software on top)
@Mythricia19889 жыл бұрын
+venim1103 "I did go and try my friends 'beast' machine (gtx 980, core i7) and I just couldn't understand why he wants to use an OS that uses more than half of his 16gb RAM on background OS processes and then have like hundred of different virus clearing/preventing software running somewhere underneath (+ a 200$ more expensive OS that you need to update and pay more every single update) losing about 20% of performance he could have on an optimized Linux platform?!" This is just an indication of piss poor maintenance and not knowing how to keep a Windows PC running. It's no different from having a completely gutted Linux install that has all sorts of problems. Same thing. My Windows 10 machine uses 'Massive' 3.8 Gb of RAM and I have 2 Chrome windows with a dozen tabs each open, so they pretty much make up a large part of that, plus Steam, plus a good chunk of other things that I run, intentionally, in the background. I also run only 1 Anti-virus, and it's disabled most of the time, I only enable it when I'm dealing with something I don't particularly trust. I've never had a virus in my 15 years of Windows use, because I have a brain, and I don't click banners on web pages that say "YOU WON 1'000'000 DOLLARS" and I definitively don't download or execute something that I don't know exactly what is. Also Windows 10 was free, the last time I paid for Windows was when 7 came out, which was in 2009, so that's 6 years ago - and there's never been a paid update for it as far as I know. Windows 8.1 sucked a giant dick so I don't know why anyone would have willingly used it anyway. So, basically, my OS cost me less than I care about, it has support, it does not have any performance issues what so ever, the only time I had repeated bluescreen or crash issues was when my 2nd GPU died (I'm pretty sure Linux won't take kindly to a dead graphics card either, unless it performs literal miracles). And don't even start about the updates - most Linux geeks I know spend all their time installing new Linux distribs or recompiling this, recompiling that, they're doing a hundred times more 'maintenance' than I ever need to do. Windows 10 just sometimes takes 30 seconds longer to shut down or boot because it's installing and update. Fine by me. Call it optimized all you want anyway, I've never seen a real-world use case for Linux being faster at desktop activities. Sure it's better at other things, and I'm not saying Linux is not useful or good, but I'm saying it's not a Desktop OS for average people and it never will be. It's very good at certain things, and that's okay - it's great that it exists for those things. Meanwhile I actually enjoy getting work done, I enjoy having the options to run most software out there, and I have driver support for most things. Unlike Linux, that is restricted to a smaller ecosystem of software, lacks driver support for many things, especially niche things that aren't wildly ubiquitous. I've used Linux for a lot of things, and I've never even considered it as a desktop or everyday OS, it's just more trouble, more fiddling, more bullshitting for imaginary placebo benefits that don't actually exist in real use. The sooner the whole Windows vs Linux debate dies the better. People who value what Linux offers them should just use it and be happy. And they should let people who prefer to use Windows, just use it and be happy. If you genuinely enjoy Linux better, great - use it, and just be happy. You don't need to convince everyone else.
@venim11039 жыл бұрын
+Mythricia I agree, Linux is not that good for both gaming and desktop use for an average user as it does do some things well but lacks in others, especially in a preinstalled environment like Ubuntu and such. I do enjoy Linux but I hate the fact of it having bad support from many developers when it could be the most efficient thing on the planet if set up correctly and having all the needed software for it and if it got all the support from every developer and hardware manufacturer. For me, having used Arch Linux as my main OS for the past 8 years has been both a blast and a nuisance. The thing I really like is the freedom you get from building your system ground up, choosing every single program and after having it configured you can just copy it to another computer and use it there and then just use one command to update and keep the system up to date. After that, the system is basically maintenance free.. I think all systems should use this "rolling release" way of approach instead of the Windows' and Ubuntu's fixed release approach. I would use Windows if it had these few things I can't live without anymore after switching to Linux: 1) Easily handled security. To not worry about viruses, trojans etc. Simple and lightweight way of setting up firewall and sandboxed systems. 2) Full freedom to modify and build the system ground up without any restrictions and non-uninstallable bloatware. 3) Rolling release approach with not having to update your whole system with fixed releases every few years and worry about support for all your old software that you can't run anymore if you have not upgraded to the next release. (Windows XP, old Ubuntu versions like Ubuntu 8) 4) Opensource support. I also don't have anything against Windows users. I understand why for most people it is the easiest to use OS because of the already forced familiarity and I understand why gamers prefer it as well (more software, more support from big developers). What I want to say is, I hate Windows for letting me down so much in the past and having me put so much money into an unoptimized locked down OS. Microsoft is a company that has never learned from their mistakes and that is why companies like Apple and Google are starting to take over. I'm not saying these companies are any better though. (Ps. My system uses 80mb RAM and an average of 0,1% of cpu core usage on every core while on idle.)

3 years later. With more work on proton(making it more seemless and just one button press to get the game to work), if valve makes a new Steam machine thing, and actually makes it more simple(with one or 2 versions, maybe a Gtx 1070/Rx 580), it could compete with the modern consoles given a marketing budget and that would be impressive, being capable of just being a Linux desktop AND a console. Or it's just the Linux fanboy in me talking ;p.
@johnbrown91815 жыл бұрын
> Or it's just the Linux fanboy in me talking ;p. As someone who only ever uses Windows for VR, unfortunately I think it is. Firstly, the price - a GTX 1070 easily exceeds the cost of either of the two big consoles. And keep in mind they includes a: * Harddrive * CPU (well, the two big consoles actually have AMD APUs, but this would need a CPU) * RAM * PSU and case * Controller Sure, volume pricing would be cheaper, as would the RX580, but there's no way this new Steam Machine would be able to compete with either 8th-gen console in terms of price. Secondly, the Steam Machines didn't had disc support, and Valve can't just start selling discs without asking the game publishers - especially as that opens up stuff like sharing/trading games, and the used game market. Thirdly, PC hardware ages very poorly compared to console hardware. Consoles are expected to last at least five years. For reference, imagine building this console five years ago with a GTX 770 - that's not running new AAA games without making a great deal of compromises in the settings - especially with the overhead of DXVK or vkd3d used in Proton. And this doesn't consider support. Sony and Microsoft both have track records of supporting all their consoles for many years, so buyers can be confident they won't be stuck with a console they can't get new games for. Valve stopped, or at least wound down, their efforts on the Steam Machines shortly (in console timespan) after releasing them, which is a major black mark for them. The reason why consoles are able to do so much with relatively poor hardware is that they use custom APIs that let you get very close to the hardware, and do stuff that's not at all platform specific. This is greatly aided by the 8th-gen consoles having a unified memory bus, with all their RAM shared between the CPU and GPU. (oh, and the PS4 (and presumably the XB1) actually has a custom-made AMD APU, with custom drivers and everything - that's super expensive) And the console audience has little tolerance for bugs. If they buy, say, Subnautica and find that plugging in a controller makes you spin around in circles, they're not going to be impressed. And having to look through for community controller mappings isn't going to fly, either. The thing here is that console players expect to be able to go down to the shop, buy a game, put it in their console and play it (maybe after a much-complained-about update), with no configuration or fiddling of any kind, no graphical bugs, and no Wine-related crashes (though those are becoming increasingly rare). Then there are the games that either have their own launcher chained in (UPlay), or aren't on Steam at all (EA, Epic, Blizzard). Finally, what advantage does this new Steam Machine have over a PlayStation 4 or XBox One? Nicer graphics are about the only thing I can think of. Consoles NEED exclusives (especially if there are major games the console cannot play). They sell systems, even if the console manufacturer has to subsidise them. Valve hasn't made any, which is a major problem. And keep in mind the 9th-generation consoles are well underway - games are already being made for the PS5 and IMO it's likely we'll see an announcement before the end of the year, and Microsoft is probably at a similar stage. > being capable of just being a Linux desktop AND a console. It's hard to do general-purpose Linux stuff on your TV, and I can't imagine much of an audience for this.

They should release Half-Life 3 for Linux exclusive and offer cheaper Steam Machines (350-400$) which run Half-Life 3
@hkoizumi31349 жыл бұрын
meulto itau The target audience for steam machine as Linus described are primarily a console gamer with an extra disposable income. Half Life series has been the bedrock of PC gaming experience and alienating the established PC gamers and offering to console gamers who more likely never played Half Life seems like a bad idea.

+meulto itau Or have it as a timed exclusive, do it like sony and MS do it, call the game console exclusive, get advertisements out there with the steam machines and Pc exclusives that work on Steam OS, show some triple A's that work on everything to though, show of bioshock infinate at high settings, show of The Talo's principles, CS:GO, HL1-3, portal 1+2, Metro last light, rocket league, street fighter V, etc etc, sure PC gamers will say they have all of them, but its not advertised to PC gamers, and perhaps it would be a great idea to have games that aren't on Windows and Valve should create one, I don't think they should make HL3 fully exclusive, perhaps timed exclusive but if they want a SteamOS full time exclusive its got to be a new IP in my PO, and its got to attract console gamers more then there previous games.

This pretty much sums up my overall opinion for the last 3 years. I have a PC running both Windows and Linux and the respective Steam clients for each, and using the thing on an HDTV works perfectly as a console.
@pennyandrews32928 жыл бұрын
I personally think the version of this that has Windows 10 and an Xbox 360 controller was a better deal than the version with Linux. The controller on this thing looks terrible. Why would you want to buy something that can't play all the games that are on Steam? It's not as if this runs any better than a Windows PC with similar specs... if Valve could have swallowed their pride and just configured Windows so that it makes the Valve client full screen, it might have been a halfway usable product. Valve is being really hard-headed pushing Linux like this... no one really wants Linux, and those who do are already installing it on their PCs. Give it a rest, Gabe.
