We're a bit late to the party on the Steam Link, but that might not be a bad thing... Are the majority of the Link's known issues a thing of the past?

Bought it back in 2017 for $10 so I can stream my rig to my basement theater. I've been using it almost daily ever since for both gaming and desktop/web browser/etc. Tried to replace it with steam link app running through fire tv cube and it was a laggy/buggy mess. Switched right back. Best $10 spent.

Finally got one of these set up recently and had major lag spikes running a powerline adapter from upstairs, however after realising I had a spare 30m ethernet cable and that I could close the exterior windows on them without damaging them, I ran ethernet down the side of the house and into my living room. Works awesome, looks great and so far has been absolutely solid.

I've got an idea for a build LMG! Imagine this: One server, running unRAID with multiple VM's with dedicated Nvidia home streaming capable GPU's, a huge amount of storage and 1 or 2 beefy xeon CPU's. Does this sound familiar? Yes, but what's the difference then? Well.. 1. You could make the ultimate in-home entertainment distribution server by using the GPU's to distribute gaming horsepower. Either through Nvidia stream to shield devices and moonlight (third party android app which is compatible with nvidia and which works really well from my experience) or to steam links. 2. Then use a VM with some USB Cable receivers and something like DVBLogic for live TV 3. Then use a VM which is running a plex server for media distribution. 4. And you could even add a VM that's running game servers. This PC would theoretically be able to stream games, movies, music, TV shows and live TV to low powered clients who can also game on servers running on it.

I got it for $5 in an EB Games two days ago. I played Broforce with my friend today, and we had a blast - no issues during play, but when we took a break and his Xbox controller turned off to save power, we had some trouble getting it to connect again. Still though, being able to play PC games with friends on a TV was a great experience, and well worth the $5. -though yes, go wired; i don't know what the link is like without a wired connection, but when it is wired, it's completely hassle-free-

Linus, here's some feedback. When doing a review for a product start with a clear, simple description of what the product is and what it is meant to do. Having never heard of the Steam Link before, I came in here and from the start of the video I was bombarded with technical specs, opinions, remarks and whatnot and kept wondering all that time "but what is this device's purpose? What is is supposed to do?"

I got one of these, honestly the most appealing feature of them is that they can literally just stream your whole PC to any screen in the house, you don't even need to use them for gaming necessarily, you can just use them as a way of remoting to any device, you could even use them for work. Also it's possible to connect to PCs across the internet too (even though the latency is obviously going to be crap) which could be useful in some circumstances perhaps. It really is just a device for taking video and audio from Location A and presenting it at Location B, and taking inputs at Location B and feeding them back to Location A, about as close to real time as the connection will allow. Instead of making something gimmicky and designed to railroad consumers into a specific way of doing things or some kind of ecosystem, what Valve has made is really just a neat little dedicated 'remote desktop' device with easy setup as long as you have Steam installed, and if you know what you're doing, you could use it for anything. It's cheap, it's reliable, it works, it's no bullshit.

I had one of these for ages but didnt have a proper pc or tv. Now I have both. I loaded up GTA 5 and honestly, theres a little latency but its not bad! The TV is a 4K one and I have no issues with the screen quality whatsoever. I mean a direct HDMI link from PC to TV would be better, but I'm not complaining as far as performance goes! Protip: Use ethernet cables for both your PC and the Steam Link for the best results.

If you're using a wired connection directly to your PC. Go to Steam settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options and turn off "Dynamically Adjust Capture Resolution To Improve Performace". Latency dropped from something like 69ms to under 20ms (around 13ms to 18ms). It's low enough to play 2D games well. I think dynamic resolution is more for wifi which can be a lot more unstable in performance than a wired conection. The Steam Link continues to impress me. :-)

Bought this bad boy for about £12 from a game store when they were discontinuing them, in July 2017. Since then I've been for the most part using it as a remote desktop station, I can pretty much play and do whatever I would on my physical PC, except I can do it when I'm away from home or downstairs. A few issues are: Need to buy some third party app on the steam store for steamlink plugged microphones (extortion and an absolute joke, I haven't bought it, this should be native.) Printscreen button doesn't work If you're moving your mouse and click (E.G adjusting camera view in WoW) it will throw your camera way off. Other than that, it's great and extremely convenient.

Also add games that support for local multiplayer that you may wanna play on the TV, like Mortal Kombat, Broforce, etc. Good episode overall :)

I've found the reviews for Steam Link to be entirely lacking. if you are a stickler for detail with an eye for video quality you will notice the difference. Even when running perfectly, it can be explained as the difference between playing a game on your PC and watching a KZbin video of that same game. It isn't quite the same. Additionally if you are running cutting edge games to their absolute limit on your PC the additional load caused by the video encoding will cause your game to lose those precious frames per second. For me this wasn't acceptable and I ended up buying a massive HDMI cable and a series of powered USB extenders. If you're a graphics whore like me you won't like the Steam Link.

Just to help anyone else watching this video now. For the past couple of years since steam big picture / game streaming has been available. I keep my Xbox wireless adapter plugged into the server rather than the client, this eliminates any input lag. Of course minor FPS lag is still there but it's not as noticeable. And when you start to see someone barley show up in the corner of your screen your finger eye coordination can adjust and take over from there. :) hope this helps!

Edit: upon finishing the video I must note that the main multiplayer game I play is casual Minecraft. When I want something serious I go to my computer set up for serious gaming.

And now Steam Link is just a standalone feature on your PC with Steam installed. You can now use WiFi or a cellular connection to game on the go, or at a friends house to play with them locally. Personally I think it's great. Almost no latency that I can feel when playing away from home or even outside with my Razer Kishi connected to my phone to simulate a Steam Deck of sorts. I know I'll never need a Steam Deck with how well Steam Link works these days

good review. it's an important point that STEAM are transparent about their ongoing support and improvements to a platform. it's a consumer confidence issue. it makes people more likely to by STEAM products in future if they think that STEAM isn't just making a couple of novelty products.

I picked it up in the $20 black friday sale. It's pretty useful, although quite buggy. About half of my games work perfectly without any changes, the others have issues. Sometimes I have to go to the pc and shut the game manually because steam link loses focus on it, or a game opens in a small window in the middle of the screen. If I adjust the resolution and switch out of full screen mode, or switch the game from directx to opengl, most of them work but with a visible cursor on the screen that has to be moved out of the way on the pc. It's acceptable for what it is, since it's like having a gaming console in the living room.

I bought my steam link on the steam sale and I'm VERY satisfied with it. (No one payed me to say that). I'm using Broadband over power lines to get a reliable connection between my pc and steam link and it runs perfectly :). Totally recommend it. Yes you can watch movies and yes it works with games outside of steam.

I'd rather have a console cough Xbox 360 cough because it's fun with a whole bunch of friends or family. PC don't support split screen on most games and they are large, even if you use the smallest ITX build its still large. I recently purchased a kangaroo pc for CAD$169.99 and I installed steam on it. I use the steam family sharing to stream games from my pc over a 5ghz band to the kangaroo box and I have had no problems playing games like shadow of mordor, metro, witcher etc over wireless, using a controller (that was plugged into the kangaroo pc). I'd personally recommend a tiny pc as you not only get a streaming device for steam (get one that supports wireless AC) but it also comes with full windows 10 and you can use it as a home media machine on which you can stream movies from your media server or just browse reddit.
