I believe the reason behind their decision of installing SteamOS is because they are trying to push linux support as hard as possible, they want linux to be the next main platform for games and one way they could do this is, releasing a console running linux. this way game devs that make games with controller support would be incentivised to compile a linux build, effectively growing the linux library.

I used to have one and got it on sale. Gave one to my friend and honestly it wasn't a bad computer at all-- it gamed fine for what I wanted it to and if you can pick one up used for a decent price (200-300 for i3 models, maybe less if you're lucky), they're incredibly space conscious and deserve some love. I'd love to have one again for my guest room but maybe an r2 version. :)

Elias gagnef yeah but one of the main points of a console is how easy they are to use. Like would a dad go through the whole hassle of installing windows on a more expensive machine rather then get a ps/xbox and just plug and play? Also the console market is heavily dominated by ps/xbox and nintendo as much as its drilled into peoples minds, when you say console people dont imagine a box of machinery that they can play games with, they think Ps4 etc.
@MMXANCE

wasn't the main reason valve even released them a dispute with microsoft? windows 10 was new at the time and Microsoft said something like all apps (that includes games) should only be sold through the windows store. That would mean valve would lose a good percentage on every sale. My guess is valve and microsoft arranged a deal and that pretty much made the steam machine useless

I don’t think Alienware is singled out as a “hated” brand. There’s the general shade thrown to buying pre built PCs but with GPU prices of late, the gap between pre built and custom built has shrunk. I personally like Dell products in general though so maybe I’m biased.

Alienware is a company which sells overprice hardware non-stop so the hate towards them is justified in my eyes. The only ones which really love Alienware are little kids which throw their money at them just because its Alienware. Razer tends to go in the same direction with their fanbase, though at least Razer makes (some) good products like the Stealth.

interesting anyway for people want to "finish" steam game. My gpu on my laptop dies, after 6 years of use. I can replace it but for almost the same price, i can have this steam console to just finish my old steam library. I don't want to put another 1800€+ in a comptuer nowadays to play, consoles are enough for me right know, i just need mid spec pc to play... but maybe there is always a better alternative to build a very cheap good 1080p PC in 2019/2020 to finish 2011-2017 games

I'm sorry but you really don't. It has a problem with breaking down and to stop working completely. If it would do that you would have to send it back to Intel to fix your motherboard. Which would take about a month. Then after you got it back it would break again within a week. I just recommend saving up for a gaming PC that won't break every week or two.

The thing running on Linux was definitely the biggest killer of the console. Valve shouldn't even have considered releasing it until they fully released Proton, it would of effectively tripled the library and if we are going by the numbers of how many games are playable with Proton now it would of jumped from 600 games to 6,000. Some people might say they should of gone with Windows but I really doubt that would of been possible considering it was a competitor to the Xbox and even if Microsoft would of somehow been fine with it Valve definitely would of had to pay out the ass in licencing fees.

DoubleVendetta (*******Chance Cox*******) I know about the refresh but having one with a modern GPU and CPU would be cool. I know a 960 is just as fast as a 1050. But the heat and TDP would be much lower. Put a 1050 and a T class Intel cpu and it would be cool and quiet

fosh bz I owned both models at one point in time each. The second one really isn't that much louder than the first, or all that much warmer, especially when you think about the fact that it's 2X the horsepower. And the 960 in the R2 doesn't just compete with the 1050, it competes with the 1050 *Ti.*

Something I don't think you mentioned is that it seems to be practically identical to the Alienware Alpha line, down to the cut out on the case for the Steam logo and lights (but the logo is obviously missing). My boyfriend has been using the i3 model for the past few years and I think got identical performance to you; it's not an awful computer, and for the price and form factor it's nice, but it's definitely showing its age. I think these might also be nearing the end of their life with support because his wi-fi drivers broke with a Windows 10 update and there's been no fixes for it at all.

Valve did not market it enough for the console crowd. It’s like they couldn’t decide wtf it’s supposed to be. They should have gone for a low budget controller played console instead. $399 max. It was also dumb that you can browse games you can’t even play on the steam store. Needed to have it’s own store. Not a turn on for console players. Would have been better to create a starting lineup of compatible games and put ONLY THOSE on the steam machine games store.

A few things seemed off while I was watching this. First, just a note in your description. From my understanding the Steam Machine was Valve's official offering, while a Steam Box was any other computer that ran SteamOS on it (since that was freely available). Second, Valve can't control what games are released for Linux other than games they make themselves. It's up to the game developers to make that choice. Valve likely picked Linux because it would have been cheaper for them. I'd also like to point out that counting the software library based on pages isn't really the best way to do it. Games have different numbers of DLC/micro-transactions, so if one game has 3-4 pages worth of it and isn't on Linux that makes Linux support look worse than it really is. Even just counting games isn't the best way to do it since there are a ton of crappy games that are Windows only. It would be better to look at the top 1000 games (or whatever number) on Steam, and get a percentage of the ones that are available for Linux. With a little work, many of the Windows only games can work on Linux as well (macs too for that matter), though just like installing Windows on there, you really can't expect a non-technical user to know this/figure out how to do it. Just a small technicality, SteamOS isn't really based on Linux, it uses Linux. They added some custom drivers and other software on top of Debian. This is a Linux system, not a system based on Linux.

It's not hard to port a game to Linux on steam: I think Steam just needed to get more developers on board, and also ADVERTISE more. I didn't know that steam machines even existed for the longest, and many of my friends didn't either. One thing that Steam did succeed in is bringing a lot of games to Linux overall though: I ditched Windows 10 in favor of Linux for my home PC, and I can play 70% of my steam library: granted, I tend to like Indie games and older games, so my numbers may be a little skewed. Anyway, it's ridiculous that so many developers are locking themselves into Windows 10 as their sole, proprietary platform in 2018. There's so much potential for cool and innovative devices if developers just made their games more portable, because it's neither practical nor desirable to just run Windows 10 on everything, and I do believe it to be a legacy platform that, while well entrenched, will eventually be eclipsed by more open platforms as Microsoft attempt to lock it down more and more.
@johnbrown9181
@johnbrown9181 5 жыл бұрын
> granted, I tend to like Indie games and older games, so my numbers may be a little skewed. Many indies are familiar with some form of UNIX (be it Linux, BSD, or OSX), and are happy to port them even if it's not financially viable. That last point matters far more for AAA publishers, hence why they rarely release Linux versions. > Anyway, it's ridiculous that so many developers are locking themselves into Windows 10 as their sole, proprietary platform in 2018. Basically all the AAA games are on consoles, and it's mostly indie games that don't have console ports. In any case, they're (for the most part) not locking themselves in - they're selling for the major markets, but not using UWP or anything else extremely hard to port away from - if a new platform comes out (eg, the Switch), and it's a major platform, you'll see a sudden flurry of ports.

@@johnbrown9181 You guys forgot to talk about Proton : Their own flavour of Wine/DXVK they made to make a lot of games playable on Linux even if they are not ported. I could play some triple A games that were Windows-only without any problem. They are actively developing this so I will not be surprised if another version of the steam machine comes out.
@johnbrown9181
@johnbrown9181 5 жыл бұрын
@@aquazus Wine always has been, and always will be, rather finicky. Sure, a game might mostly work fine, but maybe controller support on Wine is botched - I'm mainly thinking about Subnautica here (apparently the issue also exists when used with Proton which has it's own Steam-based controller driver). Or maybe there's some rendering issue in a major title that only appears under certain conditions, and takes a lot of work to track down. Maybe an anticheat incorrectly identifies Wine users as cheaters - IIRC this has happened several times before. Finally, games generally perform far worse under Wine than they do under Windows. DXVK is certainly better than wined3d, which is certainly better than wined3d five years ago (oh the horrors, not being able to use D3D11 back then), however it still has MAJOR performance issues. In general, Wine is excellent for running Windows software on UNIX-like platforms (be it Linux, BSD, or OSX) - however it will always have a lot of issues, and is more of a compromise than anything else. That's fine if you already have a reason to use one of those platforms, but if it's a game console then there isn't. Plenty of Mac users have never used the command line before, and would never dream of using BSD, but that doesn't stop them from using the PS4. Consoles are there for the purpose of playing games. A console that plays most games, though some of them have technical issues, some of them need you to set DLL builtins, some need you to install different versions of libraries b/c the newest versions don't work in Wine, is not something most people will want to use. Here's the fundamental problem: why would anyone ever want to use SteamOS, when they could just install Windows on that exact same hardware (or buy it with Windows preinstalled)? Anyone who doesn't already have a Steam account and only wants to play games on the couch isn't going to buy a more expensive, worse advertised and unsupported by any major publishers, Steam Machine. Anyone who does already have a Steam Machine and an extensive Steam library that they don't want to switch away from should be comfortable buying the Windows-based version of the console, and that won't have any of the aforementioned issues. TL;DR Wine is great, but completely unsuitable for building a console around.

The reason it failed IMO was that it got released too early and was overpriced. If Valve patiently waited till 2017 and putted AMD stuff on it, then it'd be something. Since that year AMD's open source driver got really good so it would be useful for their SteamOS which is a Debian-based Linux distribution. If Valve decides to redo the Steam Machine thing, they should consider an option to let the customer to choose the hardware parts while having pre-made ones as an option. SteamOS right now just received an update and has a recent Linux kernel and graphics card drivers.

I kind of wish people would look at the original alienware version that I believe released before SteamOS. It used Kodi, which had full controller support but ran on windows essentially and didnt have the linux limitations so you could play essentially any game you had on steam. It was the first PC I ever owned and it led me to building my own PC. The version that came with Kodi also supported a desktop mode which allowed windows to run normally. It was much better than the steam version. Still though, with only an old dual-core processor you couldnt do a whole lot.

Couldn't watch this video to completion, so many inaccuracies. First off, the Steam machine you're reviewing wasn't made by Valve, it was made by Dell. It's called the Alienware Alpha and it's still being sold by Dell. Valve worked in cooperation with Dell sure but ultimately it's Dell's product, not Valve's. Second, regarding Steam OS, you said it's "Linux based". Steam OS is a distro or distribution. Steam OS is derived from Debian Linux. Not to be an elitist but I can tell you're not really a Linux user. Third, you stated you game on Windows 10 because "it's easier" and found the lack of games off-putting. Fair point, however you failed to catch what Valve was trying to do. As it stands, Linux commands roughly 2% of the OSes on people's computers. Apple and OSX command another 8-10% and the vast majority (88% roughly) is Windows. When game developers make games, they first determine who their target audience is and what OS they're using. Usually, this means that computer game devs make games for Windows and historically ignore Linux users because we're the minority. The end result is the vast disparity of games between the two OSes. Valve's Steam Machine initiative was an attempt to lure more game developers over to Linux, and to an extent it was successful. There's been a big increase in the number of games available for Linux, but nowhere near what's available for Windows 10. While I freely admit that it could be seen as a failure, Valve themselves have stated they have a few more proverbial tricks up their sleeves regarding Steam OS and Steam Machines. Maybe we'll hear about it at E3 this year. Maybe not.

Not to be an elitist but I can tell you're not really a Linux user. Calling SteamOS Linux-based is technically true. 'The' Linux (the kernel) isn't an OS - it's a kernel. By itself, your computer cannot do anything useful. By combining it with a userspace (GNU/BSD), a graphics server (X11/Wayland) and a desktop environment (most commonly KDE/G[NU ]NOME), you get an OS. For brevity, most people refer to the Kernel+Userspace+Graphics Server+DE stack simply as 'Linux', which is fine and makes sense since 'GNU+Linux+X11+KDE' doesn't roll off the tongue. * > When game developers make games, they first determine who their target audience is and what OS they're using. Usually, this means that computer game devs make games for Windows and historically ignore Linux users because we're the minority. The end result is the vast disparity of games between the two OSes. There are three ways to get most games to be compatible - and having most (if not all) the major AAA games onboard was mandatory if it was to succeed: 1. Have a large enough userbase that it is always profitable to port - this is why every major game comes out on both consoles. 2. Pay developers to port their games - this is extremely expensive, and many publishers don't want their games on Steam anyway. 3. As an alternative to getting the AAA games on side, release many system-exclusive high-quality first-party titles - this is the Nintendo approach. Valve probably was only ever going to have a chance if they heavily subsidized the hardware (to establish 1 as fast as possible), spent silly amounts of money on getting games ported (2), and release several major first-party titles (3) - due to the number of titles required to meaningfully make a difference, this would likely have to be by paying 3rd-party developers to develop exclusives. This would be absurdly expensive, and they weren't willing to pay, hence the flop. * Whether we call this stack GNU+Linux or just Linux is irrelevant to the point, and neither Linux nor the GNU userspace are operating systems.

>actually explains that this is not the OG steam machine in the video >Steam themselves call it "linux based" (and i mean, it IS) >Steam OS platform is as dead as Harambe, and you are actually arguing against that, claiming it's still a victory in a way I'd really like the Linux community a lot more if people like you did not exist. It's an OS, not a best friend that's being bullied, but an OS, why even bother typing this BS comment?

Now since Valve has Proton, that eliminates most of the compatibility issues, they should have had that back then with this. So going from the benchmarks the GTX 860m is around the same as the GT 1030.

Dont use PUBG ever for benchmarking! PUBG is so unoptimised and laggy even if you have a Nasa super computer.

I bought one of these back when it came out except one thing, it ran windows instead. At the time i got it around $400 and it was a god damn steal. It had it's problems, but it was more cost efficient and better performing than any prebuilt or possibly custom build at that price point. It was a fantastic intro to pc gaming and I have since built my own machine. But i will always look back at this fondly.

Man, I really hope they can fix their steam OS and release it again. I am so sick of the pissing contest between console companies an opensource console would be completely awesome!
