Perhaps our pursuit of drug-free sports went a little too far. Many diseases supposedly linked to steroid use in adults simply do not occur, says Steven Kotler. Steroids are, however, great at combating HIV/AIDS and as an anti-aging too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEVEN KOTLER:
Steven Kotler is an award-winning journalist, a New York Times bestselling author, and executive director of Flow Research Collective. His books include the non-fiction works The Rise of Superman, Abundance, A Small Furry Prayer, West of Jesus, and the novel The Angle Quickest for Flight. His works have been translated into over 30 languages. His articles have appeared in over 60 publications, including The Atlantic Monthly, Wired, GQ, Popular Science, and Discover.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Steven Kotler: I had no interest whatsoever in steroids. I got involved in this because an editor who is a friend of mine called me up and said Jose Canseco just wrote this crazy book where he said steroids are the wonder drug of tomorrow. And I said look man, I am not much of a baseball fan. It kind of bores me and everybody knows steroids are terrible for you. Canseco’s out of his mind. There’s no way - like you’re wasting my time. And he said, you know, it was very, very convincing. He said I’ll pay you to do the research. I was like absolutely I’m in. So I started looking at it and I just started I said okay, I’m just going to read - I’m going to go back ten years and read the articles in major journals - The New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Nature - that kind of thing. I’m not even going to go that deep. Very very quickly what I started to discover is every single thing I thought I knew about steroids was wrong. Every crazy disease these drugs had been linked to have nothing to do with it. I’ll give you a phenomenal example. Steroids were linked to liver cancer, liver problems, right. It had nothing to do with the steroid. It has to do with the coating they put around the steroid so it could pass through the stomach and get into your bloodstream. That was what was causing the problems. That coating has obviously since been replaced. But Nick Evans who’s at UCLA is the only person literally in history whose ever done long-term steroid studies, right. Long term abusers. Body builders, double and triple stacking steroids for 10, 20 years at a time.
None of the things we’ve been told about are real. The only danger he found is since the heart is a muscle there is a certain point if you’re taking massive massive doses over long periods of time it can expand it, it can grow, right and grow bigger than the blood vessels and the ventricles and what not which would be a problem. And this doesn’t mean, by the way, when teenagers use steroids, right, when you’re still producing lots of these substances it’s an absolute disaster, right. That’s bad news. But in adults everything we’ve been told tends to be wrong and some of what we’ve been told costs millions of lives, right. It turns out steroids are phenomenal, phenomenal in fighting back AIDS. They’re really, really, really good. Nobody wanted to talk about it. When doctors started treating AIDS patients with it the guy who started doing this was a guy named Walter Jekot. The government jumped in and put him in jail for five years. He scared the hell out of a ton of doctors and the result of this kind of us trying to keep sports pure and, you know, preserve the competitive advantage has been millions of people died as a result. So not only is everything you’ve been told about steroids wrong, but there were a lot of consequences. The people who have been at the forefront of this and kind of pushing it forward is the life extension community, right. Our hormones decline as we age so the idea here is we can replace them. And they’ve been working on this stuff for 10, 15 years at this point with some success. It is now one of five or six different ways people are attacking aging, right, and fighting back death. But one thing seems to be sure. Since Google’s in the anti-death game, right, Peter Diamandis, my partner, in Bold and Abundance has human longevity incorporated there in the life extension game. There are big companies, massive amounts of resources getting involved and steroids are a piece of this puzzle. And I think we’re going to have to as a country rethink our position on these drugs and anti-aging stuff is going to force us to do it.

I am a 24 year old Cystic Fibrosis patient. At the age of 22 I had the testosterone levels of a 5 year old. I felt weak, fragile, nervous, and unambitious. I started doing 100mg testosterone injections once per week as prescribed by my doctor. I still continue it to this day. I put on 10 lbs of weight, felt stronger, more energetic, and more driven. Testosterone has vastly improved my life and anyone suffering from a chronic illness truly ought to look into it. For me testosterone is not recreational, it is MEDICINE.

@@user-kx2kb9dq3j Very much so as we didn't have a big loss in size and strength and really no big drop in natural testosterone and hit hard naturally best we could, we really didn't have info at our finger tips back then and the goal was to get as much gains as possible without losing a lot of size. At 19 I weighed 122lbs at 22 I was as heavy as 195 and drop down right around 176 and staying there until the next cycle. I will say I would have not changed a thing looking back as it may took me a little longer putting on size but I suffered no side effects during that stretch. If I was doing that today things would of been a little different as I would have a lot more understanding of doing cycles more often and coasting and on top of the blood work and with some new up coming break throughs I really believe that we will be able to achieve excellent size and strength gains without the scares of side effects as well as living past 100. Many say bodybuilders trained more intense back in the 80s 90s and I really believe it was not just mind set but having legal ephredra we took and turned us into a unstoppable crazy intense lifters and you could definitely tell who was taking it.

I understand it's a 3 minute video, but this guy way oversimplified the topic. Ventricular hypertrophy is a thing, and it occurs regardless of your dosage. The rest of the physical detriments can be managed. I would argue that the psychological effects of steroids are far worse. Any time of body dysmorphia will be highly amplified. Feelings of self worth may even diminish. And there is always the possibility that your endocrine system will be completely shutdown for life, meaning you will never be able to stop taking steroids.

permanent shutdown is a myth, even w/o pct it will restart eventually, well unless we talking elderly. psychological effects are complex issue, steroids dont cause any but may exacerbate existing problems. ventricular hypertrophy occurs indeed but is nolinearly correlated with the dosage, it was acceptable simplification. what you shoulve pointed out instead is bollocks about 17a-alkylates, which are toxic to the liver, no more than acetaminophen or drinking but still.

To the folks with emotional, trigger-like reactions to Bob... Yes, exogenous steroid use (or any hormone) will definitely cause your natural production of that hormone to decrease, often significantly. Permanently? Not sure about that, but it'll definitely shrink the organ producing it (i.e. your testes). It'll also speed up male balding and prostatic hypertrophy. I'm 70 was taking 3 cc of sustanon a week plus 4 iu of GH everyday. Did not phase my heart, BP, or cholesterol. But here's the kicker : many older men suffer from enlarged prostates, myself included. Steroids do cause the prostate to grow, so pay attention to that. I needed prostate surgery a few months ago, not pleasant. So if you're going to supplement keep your Dr aware and keep being tested. Still taking GH but cut my sustanon intake to 1cc a week. We'll see how that works

Depends on density, but if it's anything close to water, then 3 cc (cubic centimeter) = 3 ml (milliliter) = 3 mg (milligram). This is because water has a density of 1 mg/ml, so every ml weighs 1 mg. Unless the supplement is oil-based (or a solid), there's a pretty good chance that the density will be incredibly close to that of water.

The only true benefit spoken about in this video is that certain steroids are beneficial to the immunodeficiency caused by HIV/Aids and simply allows the cells in your body to reconstruct and produce insulin at a greater rate than that of a "normal"/"healthy" person. (generalizing to an extent) Steroids are a medicine - not a drug store solution to life's problems. It should only ever be taken with the consent of a physician and followed by strict compliance with the recommended dosing for your current metabolic state. That is unless you want to go bald, lose hair, while having smaller testicles and a lower desire for sex.
@newton9837
@newton9837 8 жыл бұрын
Steroids are helpful for AIDS sufferers, because they help mitigate muscle wasting. There is a hormone in your body (myostatin) that restricts musle growth (if natural muscle loss exceeds growth you lose muscle). Some of this hormone is bound and left inactive by the immune system. When your immune system begins to fail the now unbound hormones overwhelm the system. As for adolescents using them, I can realy only think of one issue and that would be the growth plates in your bones fusing, preventing them from growing to full height. This is caused by estrogen (formed from some steroids), and can be motivated by choosing non-estrogen forming (non-aromatising) steroids, or adding anti-estrogen drugs. My guess though for his comment is either because he thinks kids are too young, or fears being perceived as advocating (or at least not condemning) the use of steroids by children possibly hurting his arhument.

Stuart milne All the more reason to read such papers there is a big difference between responsible use of any drugs be it alcohol, pain killers etc. To moronic use of drugs which lead to such conditions mentioned the paper. When the steroids where used specifically to treat patients usually its a trade off between the costs of the use of the drug over the benefits it gives to the patient's well being. There will always be some kind of moron who will keep using steroids not knowing the ramifications of said long term use. Personally if I where to use such drugs I would only use them for one cycle and then after that not use them again and just either maintain my own mass or just gain without the use of such drugs. As it happens I just prefer to Jog everywhere I do and do a few press ups and sit ups and squats each morning and evening and that keeps me happy, I have always been a guy about functionality more than aesthetics. Which is what body builders and weight lifters usually has their goal linked to, or that they just enjoy it, I suppose. But my point of reading the literature and the list I gave is just to get the guy started. The video has very little information on steroid question. You are correct that none of these involve short term use of steroid use and after reading these I would hope the intelligence of the reader would invoke an curiosity of what would be the impact of short term use for a single cycle as opposed to long term use.It proves you have a critical brain. Congrats! A rare thing on these comments 'ere.

He's specifically referring to test and GH. I'm a bodybuilder, and very familiar with them. Not a single death has been linked to steroids specifically, ever. Period. Why do they get such a bad rap then? It has to do with other drugs popular in the community of bodybuilding. People not afraid of needles that push the human body and it's joints and muscles to the limits, frequently injuring themselves. So pain killers, and heroin, and many other drugs are common and heavily used to disastrous effects. Instead of blaming heroin though, this guy who is huge that died at 50 must have croaked because of steroids... Insulin is also heavily used. With the right know how, this can be safely done, but some lack that know how. you can imagine what terrible a non diabetic person using insulin could get into. The biggest problems are when kids under 23-25 use them. They are still going through growth and puberty which are very dependent on hormone levels, so artificially manipulating them in this critical time spells disaster.

It was furthermore determined that hypogonadal men younger than 50 years were greater than 10 times more likely to have prior anabolic androgenic steroid exposure than men older than 50 years. Abusing steroids is bad using them for a purpose isn't. Second define which steroids, corticosteroids or sex steroids, but we all assumed you were talking about anabolic steroids, and you know people who use them as muscle enchanting agent typically use much larger dosages that people who use them for improving health, you know if you take one or two paracetamol tablets it's fine and it might relieve your headache, but take a first full of them and you might end up with busted liver, same goes for steroids.

The real issue is increased amounts of Estrogen produced by the body because of the higher levels of testosterone, But considering our enviroment is now filled with estrogen mimicking chemicals in things like milk, plastic, female contraceptives (in our water), pestecides and many other things, We would need steroids just to have as much Testosterone as our grandfathers who on average had Double the levels that the average man does today. :(

Remember that you are messing with your hormones that are essential to your life. Some may not react as bad to it but others may not be that lucky. There is no way to know how your system will react when introducing hormones that are MUCH stronger then your natural hormones. It absolutely have medical value to use steroids. Like when you are injured and need to heal quick. Or if your hormones are messed up to begin with. Steroids are great the only side affects are: lower life expectancy, backne, small penis, roids rage, increased appetite - which may lead to weight gain if you find it difficult to control what you eat, thin skin that bruises easily, delayed wound healing, sleep issues, headache, dizziness, bulging eyes, heartburn, increased sweating, and thats not even all.

1. This is a dangerous topic and shouldn't be covers with a few minutes video. 2. This video is only pro steroids though there a lot of cons to it too. Watch bigger stronger faster! 3. This guy doesn't distinguish between any form of steroids, nor does talk enough about the dangers of wrong dosage or the dangers of the black market steroids. Young guys who only look for a reason to finally take them are mislead by this talk... which is dangerous. 4. There are effective methods how to raise the testosterone production of your body naturally - research them first! Don't naively throw your money at a dealer or the pharmaceutical industry - which are basically the same s**t.

People don't realise when bodybuilders die, it isn't the steroids it's the body weight the steroids + diet + training etc allowed them to attain - Putting strain on the heart. Steroids are a minor factor.

Ive been bodybuilding 24 years and the harshest compounds we use are when we are about 5-6 weeks out from a competition which typically our blood work comes back pretty normal after we reduce to a trt dose after this and in off season we tend to use less drugs in order to grow as a calorie surplus will really be what makes us grow along with the drugs. If we continue to do cardio during our off season and dont get to out of shape our BP can stay pretty good and everything else stays fairly safe

What's normal testo level in one country could be too low in another cause the normal range varies. I'm told I can't get TRT cause my level is within normal range, although it's low. In another country I would be too low and receive TRT. Also, if the testo level is low but within normal range, why not optimize it? If your at 20% why not try to be 100%? If your batteries are down 80% you charge it. I know the natural testo production goes down when taking synthetic testo, but it's not important cause the main point is to feel well. So why not just do TRT for life, when your in your mid ages you feel crappy with low testo.

I used to workout 5-6 times a week for 3 years. I ended up getting very sick and weak (adrenal fatigue?). It took me another 3 years to recover from that and now I want to hit the gym hard again and am looking for a steroid which can help me go high in volume and intensity again. Any recommendations?

Not true! TRT in low doses is ok, but still has risks as the testosterone is synthetic. Even mild doses of anabolics causes havoc on the endocrine system! It also raises cholesterol levels leading to heart disease. Heart enlargement happens at low doses as well! Google deaths of pro wrestlers and body builders. Yes the more you take the more damage. But any use to increase testosterone over high normal range is dangerous, that with the fact that all steroids on the black market are counterfeit or for animal use can cause huge problems!

@Tony Tony If you can read, read the warnings on the pharmaceutical manufacturers product or ask an endocrinologist why you have to sign a paper acknowledging these risks.

The dudes I went to HS with that continued to use and abuse steroids into adulthood were both dead by 51. One blew his brains out during COVID as he had caught it for a third time and developed psychotic paranoia, his immune system in shambles due to anti rejection meds he had been taking for years due to a kidney transplant (which had obviously been necessary because of his steroid use). The other one had a massive heart attack (despite being a jacked non-smoker and seemingly in perfect health) and died in the OR a few days later.

This is so true. The modern medical community would rather see an otherwise healthy young guy with the testosterone level of an 85-year-old man because it’s “in range” and fear that it will cause cancer which has been debunked in the Urology community for over the last 15 years. In fact, one of the greatest causes of mortality for men across all areas is actually low testosterone. If you need it, testosterone replacement therapy can be life-changing. The addition the low-dose anabolic agents can help reverse old age muscle wasting, help With joint disease and greatly increase quality of life and people who are sick, old, and weak. It just needs to be managed. There are clinics that specialize in this, but most doctors would not even have a conversation with you about hormone replacement, because their knowledge was based on 50 year old incorrect data.

Steroids are a class of molecules... They cover so many different biological systems that it would have been as relevant to call them "drugs" in this video. My guess is that he's referring to anabolic steroids, but I'm not even sure... He might as well refer to corticosteroids. Not a very informative video... lol!
