In Denmark the right over there are demolishing social housing on the premise of getting ridding of ghettos and assimilating immigrants. Meanwhile, private property developers are going to replace the social housing, and rightwingers are so gullible and spiteful that they're applauding it, it would be karma for them to suffer a property bubble but not all Danes supported this idiocy.

I think you're right. All these wedge issues that emanate from the Tories /right wing media like ULEZ or culture wars , emotive but meaningless labels like woke or outright xenophobic rants about immigration, are all pure distraction politics to hide the fact that 40 plus years of socioeconomic neoliberalism has been a total failure. It's made us a broken, Brexit backwater. The financialisation of the finance industry , for example, leads to 80% being reinvested in insurance, property or finance. Similarly with corporations, where trillions of dollars are merely steered into share buybacks to enrich shareholders & senior management. Very little is reinvested into productive industry/infrastructure. So we end up with a low pay, low growth, low productivity rentier style economy that benefits the few . There are huge issues with wealth inequality and related issues of inadequate housing , health provision , education , justice, environment , local government, lack of tax reform etc and they're getting worse under the Tories . To disguise all the fundamental problems of this type of rapacious capitalism, where there's been a massive transfer of wealth from ordinary working people to a tiny asset owning class, the Tories / Reform & the asset owning right wing media play distraction politics. This is the only card left to play for the desperate Tories and their paymasters after 13 years of mismanagement. Meanwhile the US pump primes the economy with its IRA economic development funds and the EU has its Green Deal Industrial Plan - billions of dollars of state investment that will encourage private investment to drive future growth etc. We've just had the Tory conference and what are their grand economic development policies in response? To cancel HS2 , the incoherent re-heating of old transport plans , the watering down of net zero commitments, banning tobacco smoking for 14 year olds as they age and further education disruption with the awful title of the British Standard Qualification where maths features up to 18 years old . This hotch potch of policies is risible in the extreme and shows a party totally bereft of ideas other than the status quo.

That's not quite right and shortsighted. Without mentioning the cost to the UK brought by the pandemic They have dealt with massive inflation due to the affects of the Ukraine war. Making decisions that have countered the banks' lack of confidence and proving all so-called experts wrong. Now, they are winning that battle. They have reversed the trend of creeping unemployment. The economy has now regrown so much that the British economy is in the top 3 in the G7. It's not bad considering the lies from the labour party and the MSM about what a mess we're in. The British GDP is greater than France and is amazingly better than Germany. With a population of over 84 million people. Rishi Sunak was right to brag about how well the UK is doing their decisions have been spot on. Isn't that a bit of a bigoted comment? Conservative people are by definition traditionalists. Many are religious (Islamic, Christian, Jew etc) - and as such cannot embrace ideas that go against their religious beliefs. Is it bigotted to be religious? To believe in a greater power and to follow what you believe to be their teachings? In both Labour and Tory party there is a mix of libertarians and authoritarians. The libertarian half of both parties fights for individual freedoms - for the right to live as you see fit and to speak freely. The authoritarian half want to tell everyone what they can and can't think/do/believe.
@BONK_2000 Жыл бұрын
@@paulroberts7544 If your religion causes you to hold bigoted views then yes, it is bigotry. For instance there isn't really a 'libertarian' wing of the conservative party anymore, all of the one nation tories, who can hardly be described as 'libertarian' in the first place, were kicked out of the parliamentary party, the tories are essentially ukip-lite now.

I am british-american and have moved to london 2 years ago. Unfortunately I see that the conservative party in the UK is going the way of the Republican party in america. You say that you don't know Rishi is a neoliberal or a culture war first politician. The reality is that conservative parties in USA and UK simply cannot run on anything material or any actual policies because they are so deeply unpopular. Reagan and Thatcher may have been able to confuse people with their trickle-down magic in the 80's but the reality of their policies are all around us. Crumbling infrastructure, skyhigh inequality, and corporate monopolies running rampant. So, rather than abandon their core conservative principles which ultimately boil down to cut taxes for myself and my corporate cronies as much as possible, they have to do anything but speak about policy. Transgenderism, homosexuality, grooming children, war on cars, anything. The one thing we can't afford to happen is to have a spineless Labor party simimlar to the Democrats in America, where they do nothing but block progressive movements and line their own pockets. Looks like its already happening though. Rishi Sunak will not make it but I do worry for what is gonna come in the next 10 years for the UK political scene.

Smoking bans are absolutely a public health necessity!! To pretend that it’s a personal choice that only impacts the individual is ridiculous. Breathing in your second-hand smoke is NOT my choice. Workers and patrons should never be subject to the air pollution you decide to create in public spaces. Canada has had smoking bans indoors, on restaurant/pub patios, and near public building entrances for at least two decades. Business hasn’t suffered, and quality of public life has definitely improved. Smokers can still chose to smoke, but they cannot chose to blow that smoke into others’ lungs. And I don’t know why we would fight for children and adolescents to have freer and easy access to known poisons and carcinogens. I’m not an advocate for prohibition , but to claim that children and adolescents are fully capable of making reasoned or rational choices about the use of extremely addictive poisons is completely insane and disingenuous.

General observation of avas comment on the personal choice to smoke and how the better way to reduce lung damage would be to reduce air pollution. This thinking stuck out to me to be in contrast to her stance on XL bullys. We know that second hand smoke harms people. We can make laws about where to smoke but there will be smokers smoking in the presence of non-smokers for as long as people smoke (clearly you could also argue that this is almost always a choice on the part of the non-smokers). Therefore smoking is not limited to the individual. The risk of owning a poorly trained XL bully falls mostly on the owner but sometimes on members of the public. A cigarette or xl bully could both give an individual happiness. Then in the same way that the government could focus on air pollution instead of smoking, they could focus on criminal gangs instead of xl bullys. The argument before was that government should be able to handle big and small. Personally I default to "your freedom to swing your arm ends at the next guys face". People should own xl bullys but be punished for the act of allowing them to be aggressive towards members of the public. People who want to smoke should be allowed to smoke unless they force others to be in the second hand smoke. And both of these policies exist to distract from a failure of political leadership
@WhichDoctor1 Жыл бұрын
A closer analogy to banning XL bullies would be the government banning a particular type of cigarette. After all no one is talking about banning all dogs. And people who want a dog companion after a XL bully ban can still find one that is just as loving and loyal, just in a slightly different shape. So the banning the sale of a particular breed of dog is a different level of intervention than preventing an entire generation from smoking tobacco entirely. And while second hand smoke is still an issue, it's still confined to people who spend time near smokers, and there are already laws in place to reduce that significantly. While air pollution is something that affects everyone who lives in towns and cities, which is most of the population. And while you are right that governments can do small things like reducing smoking and large scale things like tackling air pollution at the same time, the current tory party are not. In fact they are making a big deal out of opposing their flagship air pollution policy as too interventionist, while pushing forward with smoking limitations on an entire generation of people. That shows a mismatch in priorities that is fair to point out. Btw I dont smoke and dont much like being around people who smoke. I'm in favour of further smoking restrictions. But because of that dislike, i don't inhale second hand smoke very often. But i like walking and cycling when im able to. And living in the middle of a town and next to a railway shunting yard it is impossible for me to avoid breathing in a fair amount of air pollution
@AYoutubeAccountName Жыл бұрын
@@WhichDoctor1 really interesting response to read, thanks for taking the time. Sounds like we live in a similar kind of town. I think what I was struggling to understand was the mentality that leads to you condemning the ban that affects you but accepting the one that does not. Your point on the scale of the ban (a subset of a thing vs most of it) is how you can rationalize one ban over another. Though it does beg the question why the ban is exclusively on XL bully's because if it was a really dangerous dog, the police would be using it but they're happy with German shepherds. Although again maybe bully's are hard to train. And as an aside, do you think the scale of the ban actually matters? If you grew up with XL bully's or you recently lost your family pet that was an XL bully, you might not be happy with second best. That's a pretty significant life change for those people. Then for people who can only get nicotine vapes (which maybe are still legal) they might not get the tobacco flavor or smell but they still get the effects. It's a big life change but I don't think people have the same connection to their nicotine delivery system of choice that some do with the breed that's part of the family

Do we sometimes forget one of the most basic tenets of conservatism & it's supporters. If you are vaguely posh then you see the party as being vaguely posh & is therefore your natural political home. I used to argue frequently with a good conservative friend & in the end that really was all he had.

Gonna throw my hat out there and say that I think Ava has it spot on with what the Conservative Party is about. I don't begrudge people being concerned with the culture war or wanting to fight it, but if you're being realistic, it is a largely media manufactured drama in order to keep the working classes either fighting among themselves or scapegoating one another for their own economic woes. Yes, rich white people are likely racist in predominantly white countries, just as I'm sure rich black people are racist in predominantly black countries. The main difference between them and your average talk show call in racist is that racist rich white folk hate poor white folk more than they hate rich black folk. For all their flaws, these people are fully aware of their class consciousness in a way that many even in these comments aren't. It's why even when they are in power you'll see dog whistles and platitudes towards defeating the minority scapegoat of the day, but in terms of what the party achieves, most of it boils down to tax breaks for the millionaire+ class and lucrative contract handouts to oligarch businessmen. And until the majority of the electorate wake up to this scam and start fighting for their class rather than their self-perceived identity, there's not really much hope for change.

Multiple conservatives approaching you at the conference to say "I disagree with your opinions but I enjoy politicsjoe" is the most fascinating thing to me. Like what opinions do they disagree with? James OBrien always probes any listener who says that to him about his show and it's always some form of "where you believe we should extend human decency to channel migrants or trans people, I don't".

Not gonna lie, having people doing maths and some more reading up to 18 is a great policy. But it has to be phased in over 5-10 years, not doing it radically. Staffing as Ava said, is a priority, yet another reason to phase it in. Doing it 1 year before an election would not work, do it when you get a new mandate once you win an election with such a good policy. Also someone doing maths, english and building as a technical course, that would surely be great for someone who at some point decides to change and do engineering, business or something like that at uni? More diversity of studies *within* courses.

They don't seem to have a problem with gas, oil, old cars and boilers spewing out pollution on an industrial basis but see tobacco as a major health problem. It is but not on the same climate destroying level as the former.
@thegamingeconomist3831 Жыл бұрын
Turned into? No, they always were. If you look at the way Tories operate, they love to create Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to carry out certain tasks that they'd like to disassociate themselves with, keep at arms length, or have "plausible deniability" for. Shell companies, "economic" think tanks, trust funds - the list goes on and on. UKIP were a Special Purpose Vehicle which Tories funded in order to push an anti-EU agenda because they hated the EU regulations that protected the public and workers from shoddy goods and unethical employers - and above all they hated the anti-tax-dodging legislation the EU was assembling. UKIP was always an offshoot branch of the Conservative party, and now that its purpose has more or less been fulfilled, its members and donors are going back to the Conservative fold. However there was perhaps an unintended consequence. Farage et al were so successful in weaponising anti-immigrant sentiment that they've moved the entire Tory party significantly further right and they are now well into extremist territory. It will take decades to undo the damage these rich entitled few have wrecked on society.
