Sure I remember reading that HS2 was a landmine Labour left for the tories, the only Labour fan was Andrew misnomer Adonis, they knew the tories couldn't resist a project with so much grease for their backers notwithstanding the angst in the chilterns and the rest as their farms get blitzed, result.
@alexanders7569 Жыл бұрын
HS2 is not unlike Brexit (or net zero). You have a position that is believed to be concrete. People and businesses make strategic plans and investments on the basis of that decision. If that position is torn up, you then have years of people arguing about what should replace it, in which time nothing gets done and investment is scared away by the uncertainty.

4:25 I hope Oli sees this because I want to clarify it HS2 is didn’t rip up ancient woodland. As a son of a forester (my dad has worked on woodlands for decades) - HS2 has not destroyed ‘ancient woodland’ what it has destroyed is ‘commercial woodland’ there’s a difference there. Commercial woodland is private land meanwhile ancient woodland is public land - most ancient woodland is in northern England, Scotland and Wales (National Parks like Snowdonia, Highlands etc) not the midlands (which is where I am from). So can the media not call commercial woodland ‘ancient’ please because it isn’t. It’s using the wrong labels. But I can understand the confusion because forestry and woody stuff can be confusing especially for city folks (fyi last bit us a joke - no offence my gf is a Londoner so don’t worry folks everyone can learn about trees not just us country folk). And as my dad’s forestry mates said ‘the French do rural infrastructure stuff better because they co-operate with foresters and horticultural councils unlike what we did with HS2. Plus the French have more land to do this stuff with. Also we don’t focus on flood resistance infrastructure for rural communities which ruins transport and potential projects like HS2. Never mind protecting wildlife’. But what we need infrastructure in the places needed not just big projects to London and back - we need better rail services across the country and every city should have trams (and the top 10 cities should have tube systems like Glasgow does)

Interesting point for train chat. The transcontinental rail building companies were run by cronies of politicians in the US and they were paid by the mile. So they got the contracts through cronyism then built unnecessary extra track to claim more money. I believe they also got land either side of the track they built. Still, with that inefficiency they managed it in the time it would take us to fill a pothole in most provincial towns.

I'd be interested to see how much of an incentive, 'tax cuts' actually are. People will still be able to see that they're worse off and that nothing works. I think the average person can probably sniff out who really benefits from 'tax cuts'.

when Roger Hallam said there will be 200 million climate refugees in the coming century I thought that sounded mad so went looking for a source and ultimately discovered he was exaggerating a figure produced in a 2018 study (that reassessed the risk posed by rising sea levels using NASA satellite LIDAR arrays) which found by 2100 200 million people would be living below sea level. where on earth did Oli get his 1 billion climate refugees figure from?

Sorry, Ava, but a big sigh over and minimising losing ancient woodland is a bit pathetic. We barely have any of it left, it's among our most bio-diverse habitats (in one of the most nature depleted countries in the world) and it is obviously quite time consuming to regrow.

It's almost certainly true that every real political crisis involves a situation where the normal conventions, routines and tools are recognised as being unable to address the problem. The banking crisis of 2008, the unnecessary Brexit self-harm, the COVID pandemic all presented challenges to the orthodoxy. The challenge for Labour will be to steer a course that allows the UK to begin on a path of easier trade, increased tax revenues to support investment in public services and infrastructure.

Re: Oli's theory on the party moving further right post Sunak losing the election. There was one name that you didn't mention that I think could be the perfect man for the job (in a slightly terrifying way) Nigel Farage. He's at the Tory Conference right now, has Brexit under his belt (even if it is a car crash) and he's always had a very strong stance on immigration. Obvs he's out the party at the moment, but I think he's one of the few to match Bo-Jo's cult of personality.

Interestingly definitely not a tory, centre leaning left or left leaning centre. But I've lived almost all my life in Philip Dunne's constituency, I've met him several times, have had a family member in Shropshire council and overall he is a very solid constituency MP, really pro the environment, good for farmers etc etc. Does usually toe the party line but as far as tories go one of the best of them

HS2 was supposed to go right through the middle of my city, destroying countless homes and farmlands in the process, without the ability for anyone living here to actually access it. We would have had to get a train to another city to access it. Thank fuck he finally had some level of common sense and scrapped it.
