I’m an old guy so I’m a big fan of the old smelly enamel paint. The biggest issue I have though with the new acrylic paints is the color it self. It does seem as though the research isn’t being done. A good friend of mine produces True North Precision Enamels and he researched official government paint chips from several countries for two years before he produced his first paint. They are very accurate from U.S. federal standard colors, German RLM colors, British naval colors…. The list goes on. I struggle with acrylics as it is I wish they could at least try to get the color correct. Great video as always sir you never disappoint

@@MidcoastModeler i believe enamel paints were much more accurate then acrylics for a long time. But i also believe some acrylic manufacturers are catching up meanwhile. Maybe not Hataka, but AK 3rd Gen and also Vallejo are putting quite an effort in research. I could be wrong. But ive seen a very interesting RLM colour chart by Vallejo. Thanks for the feedback!

@@chrisveya7556 I do love my enamels and still have several hundred good bottles of Model Master to use but with a stash of over 700 kits I think I’m going to have to embrace acrylics as well. Maybe when and if I get my channel started we could collaborate on something. I’m in the state of Maine in the U.S. so perhaps via zoom? Always a pleasure sir.

Chris the smell from the Hataka paints is more likely a hardener in order the give it durability. Most acrylics uses a plastics as there mediums as where enamels uses an oil for there. As for me I prefer enamels.

Thanks for the test, really helpful. I was considering Hataka in the past, because of their nice sets, but ultimately didn't buy the paints. A future test video of Mr. Aqueous paints would be cool, I have heard lately that they are the best acrylics on the market.

Thanks for the review. I am re-entering the hobby after a long sabbatical, and there are just to many paints on the market to get my " old skill and style of building back. The popular acrylics just art working well and I keep investing in new brands that aren't performing well either. I don't understand why people are so fascinated with Vallejo. Tamiya is not bad but doesn't thin down for spray . AK is my next attempt, after this I may go back to Enamels but everything is made acrylic. I don't mean to ramble , however I see some other comments that reflect my impression of today's paint choices. Oh , I've never had to use this black pre-season coat before either it seems more of a fad than effective and will distort the color balance.

Yes most of the new introduced paints are acrylics but not all of them. There are some new type of laquer paints as well. Let me know how you like the AK 3rd Gen👍🏻

Thanks for the review of the Hataka Red Line! I haven't tried them yet, but I have tried the Hataka Orange line Lacquer paints and liked the semi-gloss satin shine they gave. I've since moved away from them, as I found the paint chipped easily, even with a coat of primer down. The colors were not bright as you experienced with the Red line, but the colors were a little suspect to my eyes. I also noticed when I used Mr. Leveling thinner that the color sometimes would change hue in the airbrush if left for a few minutes. So you had to use it all right away or mix it up in the color cup when it separated.
@chrisveya7556
@chrisveya7556 Ай бұрын
I also like the satin look the red line paints get when completely dry, i asume its even better with the laquer line. Interesting what you have noticed about the paint being easily chipped away, because with the acrylics its the opposite, Vallejo is more fragile for instance Thanks for the feedback!

Hey Chris, good job on the model. More importantly, good job with your girls. Remember if you want to tone down the garish nature of the colors, you can always use the old artist’s trick of adding a SMALL amount of complementary color. A color wheel is very useful for this, and is another great tool to have. Cheers.

I did a comparison between AK3G, Ammo, Hataka and Lifecolour using early WWII RAF colours. Hataka sprayed well but it's colour tones were the least accurate of the 4. AK3G was best spraying and for colour. I've just got the RAF Early WWII set from ATOM. I already know that they spray very well and give a lovely finish, but looking at the colours in the bottle, they look way out to me. Then again as the two major colours are re-purposed ('brown' for dark earth and 'IJA Nakajima Green' for dark green) that's hardly surprising.

I've used Lifecolour and Hataka and was happy with them both, but preferred the Lifecolour RAF colours. Just looked a nicer satin finish. Found the Hataka easier to lay down though. Just trialling Atom but think their accuracy is a bit off as well. E.g. their RLM76 is actually sold as Pale Grey, as if they are saying 'It'll do'

I think AK invested a lot in colour tone research, looking at their wide tone range. As well as Vallejo, they have very informative guides about the different tones of WW2 camo colours. You mean Ammo re-uses the same colours for different products?? Thanks for the feedback!

@@chrisveya7556 Yes AK have done a lot of work for the Real Colour range; I used to use these before I switched to using only water based acrylics. With AMMO, not exactly - they haven't tried to palm them off as something different (they are still labelled as the original colour), they seem to have just included them in a set as the nearest match they have. The colour choice in the RAF Early WWII box is a bit odd too. Sky doesn't look too bad but it's labelled Sky Green - there was no such colour officially. And they've included 'Duck Egg Green' which again wasn't really an official colour - just a descriptive colour of Sky; until supplies of Sky became available, I'm sure some local mixes would have looked like AMMO's Duck Egg Green in early/mid 1940 - but AMMO would have been far better off putting in Black (fighter spinners and props and night bomber undersides) and Grey-Green (all aircraft cockpits).
