I'd rather buy the kit and not a fancy box. Besides, Eduard never builds enough kits for the industry, ( kits safe out of stock before they hit the market) they give away most of their kits to video makers like you , I seriously doubt this is 30 Euros. Too many parts and accessories even if you do get to kits. 1/72 kits are too small for this kind of commemorative kit, plus P51 just like Spitfires murderers come a dozen. Not impressed , plus don't pay for Eduard kits anymore because you have more parts left over after the build which is. Ridiculous I'd might like it if it was given to me than buy it .

@@chrisveya7556 I don't know which Eduard site you're looking at , it shows discontinued, every model website in the USA show it preorder around $80.00 before freight, some $60.00. So if it is discontinued or not even available or in a pre order status - how did you get your kit. It really doesn't matter because Eduard has turned into a bait and switch company and they think they are the only game in town - I will never buy from them again. There are better companies.

Yes…I quite agree! I am a pilot/mechanic for a living. And it is refreshing to hear what you’re mentioning. Heavy weathering has it’s place in certain models/dioramas! But as a full sized aviator, not all aircraft are like that! True, towards the end of any conflict, many aircraft get pretty beat up and depending on where they were located and who was left in maintenance, the aircraft can be quite a mess. But usually, when the mechanics are working on the aircraft, they’re cleaning and servicing as well.

A timely and frank assessment of the weathering zealotry infesting the plastic model aircraft scene in particular. Shows display endless rows of over the top cartoonish creations with realistic and subtly finished models in the minority. Out of scale, excessive effects, based more on guesswork and wishful thinking predominate. The shadowed panel line cult seeks to emulate the appearance of printed paper cutout models rather than scale but it appears this is how a "good" model is judged these days. More extreme and bizzare treatments spoil many perfectly good models, nothing realistic about them at all. Having been around actual aircraft before restoration, the weathering effect of an aircraft well used or exposed to the elements looks somewhat different. Old photos show this to advantage if available but no need to over exaggerate things. My own preference is to use weathering effects absolutely sparing or not at all, rather the newly built, restored or serviced look as shown in the films here. Way more relevant, accurate and enjoyable for this long time modeller. Maybe have two categories at shows, weathered to death and a factory fresh or resto finish.

If model manufacturers don't want to include pilots in their kits, then stop including them in the boxart with the model inflight! If the argument is that "no one wants to build them inflight with a pilot" stop advertising this in a misleading way with inflight boxart.... At the end of the day, the hobby has devolved down to only about 1% of us actually building a model aircraft inflight with a seated pilot....

The Airfix/Heller SU27 is notable for being extremely accurate dimensionally and was the best 2-seater in town for a long time. It is a quick and simple build. The more recent Zvezda SU30 is much more complicated (a lot of their newer kits are over-engineered).
@52down
@52down 9 күн бұрын
If any of you thought Revell is shameless with their models, Heller is the whole new level of the audacity and arrogance. If these kits were cheap, I could understand. If they were representing some niche topics - ok with that. But they are out there on the market competing with 2-3 classes higher tooling sometimes with the same prize tags. I remember they have promised a brand new E-2 Hawkeye back in the beginning of 2023. Even thou it's not my matter of interests, I was keeping an eye of this upcoming model kit just to ensure Heller decided to follow the Airfix and actually treat the customer base as intelligent people. Last month I found a few pictures of testing molds of this brand new Hawkeye. It's a completely new model judging the sprues' layout and far more parts included, but the quality was as much meeh as like this Flanker. Maybe the molds require some refining, but the overall sight was bad, really bad for 2024. Even CZ manufactured new tooling short run kits have sharper details and small parts. I wonder how they have managed to remain on the surface with their crappy and ridiciulously expensive offers this long, while other companies raised bar so high that Heller's kits can't even touch them jumping with both hands in the air. Revell at least has some very unique good kits they like to reissue (BV-222 or recent Ar-240 for example), some old time classics like Tornado or Typhoons in 1/72 still keeping the shape, while Heller has nothing like that. I mean, they have some specific French stuff, but these are ancient kits now with all the problems with fitting and almost non existent details.

Heller and Airfix were under the same ownership from about the mid-80s to the mid-00s when Airfix was bought over by Hornby. So they shared a lot of tooling then, with the kits actually moulded in Heller's French factory then. Heller seemed to take ownership of some of their former joint kits like this, the 1/48 Jaguar, 1/72 Concorde and a few others. For this kit (and Heller/Airfix MiG-29 from the same time) Airfix sold the single seat boxing while Heller did the two seater. For a good few years the Airfix/Heller kit was actually the most accurate 1/72 Su-27 on the market. They were never easy to build though.

@@chrisveya7556 Maybe! I built the single seater Airfix one years ago and fit was just as poor in general! I still have one or two in my stash from about 20 years ago when Airfix finally re-issued the single seater. Before more modern kits came out. The original Hasegawa one would have been an easier build, but the experts at the time rated higher in terms of accuracy. Should have probably just went with the Hasegawa! Your preview of this kit from a few months ago actually made me go out and buy this Heller kit too as I loved the decal scheme and I managed to get it cheaper than any of the more modern UB kits. I've never used any modern Heller decals so looking forward to that part of your build. It's looking great so far!

About premium kits you´re absolutely right, Im a beginner but I feel the pressure when it comes to build expensive kits because I dont want to mess it. meanwhile a Im not worried about ruining a cheap kit wich I think are good to try new techniques and learn.

What is “over-weathering”? You never define it. It seems that you mean poorly applied weathering. It sounds like you tried to replicate what you saw others do and you weren’t capable of it so now you are advocating not doing it. Building clean aircraft is fine, even though in my opinion they tend to look like toys. Over weathering doesn’t really exist, poor technique and lack of skill is what you are talking about. If you are new to the hobby build on your experience, try something new on each kit and learn. Don’t call poorly applied weathering “over weathering” just call it what it is, poorly done weathering.
@chrisveya7556
@chrisveya7556 10 күн бұрын
Over weathering is too much effects, too many or at the wrong spots. Of course anything can be overdone
@nspreitler
@nspreitler 9 күн бұрын
@@chrisveya7556 If it's at the wrong spot it's not "over weathered" it's poorly weathered. If something is "over weathered" or not is entirely subjective, poorly weathered is objective. For example chipping on fabric covered surfaces isn't possible so having metal showing on areas that were in reality fabric is an example of poorly weathered. You are using the term "over weathered" to mean poorly executed. I agree don't poorly weather your models, do it in a way to represent something that was feasible and where possible use references. Saying something is overweathered is pointless. Again it seems like you tried replicating what you saw and had poor results, and you are calling your own failure "over weathered" instead of just poorly executed weathering. Your point of using many layers and building up is a good one, but your delivery is off. Instead of saying something is overweathered a better option would be to show how to build up layers to get a desired effect.

Agree. I do 1/72 planes, mostly ww2 fighters. I noticed negatively that exhaust stains on fighters like i.e. P-51 simply be applied straight backwards instead of following the airflow on top of the wings. Or / and they often end suddenly at the height of the trailing edges of the wings. I recently saw an FW 190 model where the exhaust soot could even be seen on the top of the horizontal stabilizer! 😅

Howdy, glad I found you. Anyway, how do you keep your airbrush from clogging if you leave that much time (5 to 10 minutes) between coats? Maybe, run some airbrush cleaner through it, but then you lose your paint. I think this is a problem I have been having. With too little time between coats I think my paint is building up too much.
@chrisveya7556
@chrisveya7556 11 күн бұрын
A thin coat dries quite fast (less than 5 mins), in these cases i just wait and hope its not clogging. If the paint is thinned properly, it should be okey. When i know it will take longer (5-10 mins), i only put a small amount of paint in the airbrush cup, spray, clean with water. Then for the next coat, again drop only a small amout of paint in the airbrush cup and repeat. All these three paints can be cleaned very well with water. Yes, with these acrylics laying down thin coats and giving them enough time to dry is key. I did overdo the first or sometimes even the last coat many times

instead of beating the dead horse that is "less is more" have a look at period photos and look at how actual weathering occurs, worn paint on the wing root on a BB spitfire MK.I, chipping and primer exposed on Pacific F4U-1 corsairs, bombs were filthy and worn while being stored outside, exhaust stains on operational aircraft like the early mustangs and Hellcats, general grime from operating out of rough, forward airfields.
