It’s that way almost everywhere. I came from California and found there is very few larger lots as I looked at many states. If you want more, it’s an old house and miles from anything. I always end up next to a smoker and they go to work at 4am and slam the car doors 4 or 5 times.(Linda, I never thought I could become a nudist, so just get a ton of kimonos. You can go to the grocery store sans underwear🤫)

You don’t know “close” until you live in a RV park / park model resort in the Valley of AZ. Your neighbor sneezes, you can hand them a tissue out of the window! Your yard in The Villages look great to me!
@brockreynolds870

One thing I notice is that many homeowners don't have any plantings to mask the utility boxes... and I just HATE that. Since I'm a landscaper, I always tell my customers that ornamental grasses are the best thing to use as the universal plant to hide utility boxes. Pass the information along to your friends. Ornamental grasses (Down there, purple fountain grass is just perfect, I see one homeowner had that in your video) don't have any kind of invasive root system that will bother anything, and if at any time a utility needs to get into something to replace or service a box, it's never problem, you just cut the grass down, and it will grow right back. all grass is the same in that regard.
@11candy11
@11candy11 Жыл бұрын
There's an old joke: When you sneeze and your next door neighbor reaches out the window to hand you a tissue, you're too close. I know some people say, "You'll be outside so much doing activities in the Villages, the lot size or house doesn't matter." I've never felt that way -- Including when people say, "A hotel room doesn't matter, because you won't be staying in the room much." I like beauty and tranquility at home (it's a nesting and aesthetic thing) not just when I'm out and about. In the same frame: I don't just want my food to taste good, I want my food to have a lovely presentation too. But, to each his own. I don't need a big lot, or an elaborate home at all. But some set-back and distance between houses is important to me. Neighbors helping neighbors, or gathering together, is not limited just because the set-back and space between units is a bit apart. That's more an issue when living on acreage. But, I do love your videos. They're very helpful. Thanks for what you do.

I’ve been looking at the courtyard villas. I don’t care about having a small yard. That doesn’t bother me, but what is a little weird to me is that one side of the neighbor’s house that is actually in your yard. You could be in your own backyard and actually tap on one of their windows.

LOL, The cons - not having clothing on, urinating in the yard - I bet there is real issues when neighbors don't get along. Not everyone is considerate - do you think having a courtyard Villa might be a better option for some - they at least have a wall between neighbors.

My wife and I considered The Villages, but the Morse family owning everything was a huge impediment to our long-term comfort in owning in “Morse-town”. While we could live with naming everything in town for their family members, we couldn’t stomach the eventuality that they will sell the infrastructure and downtown (just as happened in Celebration, FL), particularly as the “build out” comes to its completion in the near future. The only remaining profit for them (and only means to limit their liability) is to sell and walk away. The legal avalanche has yet to hit The Villages, but it is coming.

Just recently came across your videos. Watched several before subscribing. You two are very enjoyable to watch. We have been to The Villages several times. We have older friends (we and they are retired military) that bought a home in Brownwood 2 years ago and my eldest cousin (much older than I am) has lived there for years. That said, my wife and I have debated the pros and cons of The Villages and have looked at other retirement areas (On Top of the World, Margaritaville Lattitude) to name 2. We finally decided on The Villages. We want a postage stamp lot! The last thing we want to do in our retirement is Yard Maintenance or to pay a significant monthly cost to have someone else do that. We have settled on a Designer Home (3/3/2 plus GC garage) and we want a lot just barely large enough to fit it on. And, not one square foot more!!! My wife was sold on your videos when you told everyone(Flea/Farmers Market video) your wife is 4'11". My wife, an oriental woman, is 5'0".

You hit every nail on the head. You learn quickly not to say unladylike words to your computer, with a window open. You learn not to rehearse your songs, singing, piano when your neighbor is relaxing on his cage lanai & not because they say anything, but you just don’t want to intrude. If your neighbor is toileting his pup, in his skivvies in AM, past quickly, he does not wish to converse. Basically, as Linda stated, it is all about consideration. As an aside that you touched on, I have always been perplexed why men enjoy outdoor “watering of the lawn”, so to speak. Jeanne

Good video Jerry & Linda. This is something that we often think about as we consider living in the villages one day. We live on a 124 acre farm and the two neighbors we have, you can’t see them. So we are use to having our own privacy all the time and pretty much can do what we want, when we want. But we will see as we are coming down for a visit soon to check it all out. We love the concept of the villages and the fact that there is a lot to do and that you can be as busy as you want to be.

I live in a condo. Some people simply are not cut out for living close to their neighbors. And some people are simply not cut out to be close neighbors. That means you have to be ready and accepting of the reminders that people are living very very close to you. And you have to be ready to be mindful of how your living might impact your neighbors. One just need be considerate. And with that in mind, you can build a terrific, supportive community. Someone falls and yells for help, someone needs the battery on their car jumped, someone is sick and can't walk their dog, someone needs help opening a jar.....that's where neighbors step in. I wouldn't trade mine for anything! Close living is not for everyone.

Even though we're quite close to our neighbors in my neighborhood (lots are about 10' apart but ~140-180' deep), I still go outside in my pj's sometimes. And as our house backs up to a lake, with other homes built opposite it, there really is no privacy at all in the front or back, so you get over that real quick! I'm just embarrassed when my neighbors see that I'm still in my pajamas at 2 pm.

That is a cool chair Gizmo sits on. One thing about the lot size is that the homes are on one level. Whereas, if you lived in a two-story home, theoretically you’d have more outdoor space. Why anyone would do this in a senior community is a mystery to me. My home is on three levels which is typical for a 100 year old home. Very difficult for most seniors at some point. This is why I want to move. I think The Villages are lovely. Personally I prefer an interior lot to a corner lot. Up here you have to pay about twice the property tax for a corner lot. We also have very small houses on half lots, sometimes one in front of the other. My neighbors garage is on my property line because the owners who lived here prior to me granted an easement for their neighbor to do so. Something I would never do. I won’t even get into the garage situation with my other neighbor. I love both families on either side of me. They are younger folks and watch out for me. Heck, I got two full Easter dinners, one from each. Don’t worry about normal noise. Most seniors are audiologically challenged like me. Is that a word? Maybe it starts with an “o”.

We have always had very considerate neighbors. I have found that because of the life style we live we are not in our home that much. We are out and about most of the day and only come home to let the dog out, grab a bite to eat and change clothes. I like the smaller yard less maintenance giving me more time to play.

I live in a NYC suburb, we have a smaller lot. No problem for me. I grew up on a farm, that was good, I have grown used to, and like having close neighbors.

You two had me laughing out loud. Wouldn't mind at all if you were our neighbors. Love your sense of humor!! I have been visiting The Villages, and saw the neighbors go our for the paper in their robe or nightgown. Didn't mind that at all. They were at home. Some day!!!

I’ve lived in my current townhouse for 19 years. I’ve had neighbors with harleys. I had a drug dealer living next door who threatened me. I had a big dog next door that came over into my yard and bit my elderly father. We’ve had lawsuits within our HOA. We’ve had people get loud after drinking all evening. We’ve had people park close enough to our driveway we can’t get our car out. One neighbor didn’t like my comments to the HOA and called me satan. Ask me if it’s important to me if the houses are close together and I will tell you that isn’t important to me one iota

I live in an old, "working class" neighborhood with small lots. My lot is typical: 30 feet wide. I can lean out my kitchen window & knock on the bathroom window of the house next door. Of course, lots this size do require having respect for neighbors. I like not having a lot of lawn to mow or sidewalk to shovel.

it only takes one bad neighbor to change your mind about living this close!! Love your videos- we have a few friends who live in the Villages and they love it! We love to visit and take in all the the Villages affords as far as entertainment. Nice to see Midwesterners there- we are originally from Ohio- but down were we live , lots of East Coast transplants.

I am very happy with my neighborhood. The house next door is about 40- 50 feet from us, mostly their property with fruit trees. They don't live there so the house is empty. We took it upon ourselves to take care of the citrus trees by cleaning up the fallen fruit and a little trimming to prevent disease and rodents and cleaning up fallen branches and minor stuff like that. Well anyway the owners came to visit , aparently another neighbor told them what we did and they were very gratful. So watching out for each other is a big factor in places like this like you said!

Too close. Now Linda ....😉 Its really a shame TV’s didn’t have 20’ between homes. You two really had a adjustment with so much land back home to here. Compromises, glad you’re happy. Do your neighbors hear the Clock😁
