I bought mine a while ago, when the normal full price for it was about 30% cheaper, and I bought it on sale, so I got it for about 50% of what it costs today. I thought I'd love it. I actually don't like it and never wear it - it's a pain to get going when it stopped, and that crown is tiny and recessed and a pain to pull when you need to set the time, which I do every time I wear it because I don't wear any watch all the time. Also it's a pain to set the day and date (particularly since the day is not always in English), so I usually just don't, so it devotes a largeish portion of the dial to a day and date which are just plain wrong. It's actually the watch that made me realize I like neither date nor day complications, and as such I never wear it. I should sell it or give it away.

The thing with Seiko pricing is that it drops. The SRPGs are already down to around 19,000 yen here in Japan, so like 123 GBP. The SNZG and SNK have both been out long enough that their prices have bottomed out long ago. Great comparison of the three models!

@@BensWatchClub The SNKs are around 10,000 yen ($88), the SNZG 14,000 yen ($120) and the SRPGs are around 18,500 yen ($160). But when they launched they were closer to 30,000 yen ($260). Had my beautiful SNK805 flieger style watch for six years, It's my go-to beater watch which I wear for dirty DIY jobs at home, and when I'm out in the wilds. It goes everywhere I go. Hill climbing, paddling or swimming/snorkelling in the sea and spending lazy days on sandy beaches. It's got a few scuffs and dings on the case, but still keeps good time and, surprisingly, not a single scratch or chip on its Hardlex crystal. It small and weighs next to nothing on wrist - the perfect watch for all outdoor activities. IMO I think it looks way cooler than the other two watches presented in your excellent review.

I love my SNK 805, but I have quite large wrists, about 8" it can look lost, the size of the SRPG looks about right 39 - 40", which is my preferred size and £200 is not too bad considering my 805 was pretty much my everyday beater.
@EnglishTMTB Жыл бұрын
I loved my SNK805 for a while, but it's sat unused for years now (bought in '13, probably hasn't been worn regularly for probably 8 of those 10.5 years) - for starters as you say, it looks too small on my wrist (7.75") and for seconds it's always been irritating just how often the time needs resetting on it... Right out of the box it was -23s/day, so it was losing almost 2 minutes per working week - gaining wouldn't bother me as much, but slow running is a definite bugbear... At this point it's nearer 40s/day slow and that's just unacceptably annoying. So it's too inaccurate to wear and not really worth spending money on, so it just sits there unused... I wound up dailying the watch I'd originally intended to wear sparingly (Longines HC - L3.695.4...) which runs about 3s/day fast... I could've bought another cheap automatic or put up with Quartz, but the SNK put me off cheap autos and if I wanted a soulless timepiece I'd just use my phone to check the time.

The SNK was my first automatic, the only drawback was the lack of hand winding for me. Not convinced I would consider the new one, just feels like a cash cow.

Not even close to a downgrade. The movement is way better than the trash 7S26 movement, and the water resistance is improved. As a Watch maker, not having hacking and hand winding on a new watch bought in 2022 is absolutely ridiculous, and you’re absolutely wrong about them having similar reliability, the 7S26 on a time graph machine gets blown out of the water compared to the 4R36

I don't get the watch companies that give the same old line about sapphire is too expensive to upgrade a watch with. A single sapphire crystal upgrade for an SKX can be bought for $50 USD, that's one crystal at retail. In bulk it would be far less, so a price increase like this and still 'hardlex" is ridiculous. It's a shame that Seiko has recently decided to raise their prices but not their quality.

I own all 3 and I have to say the new one is by far the best. Out of the new batch you chose the least attractive colorway. I've got the SRPG39K1; Blue dial, leather strap and Champagne colored Arabics. Extremely classy and the domed crystal adds nice distortion. I would say if you don't have the 💲for an Alpinist this would make a great budget alternative. Also, I don't think it's quite fair to compare it price wise to the two older watches that have been out for ages; clearly if those were being released now, they would cost more and the difference in price wouldn't be nearly as much!

Inclined to agree with those who dislike the new Seiko 5s. The new watch is nice, and definitely has an improved movement. But at the same time there was nothing wrong with the old movements of which I’ve two versions in an SNK807 and SNZF15, and they’ve been solid as a rock. And the new watches are in many cases downgrades over their predecessors (that new field watch for example is comparatively illegible when next to the old ones and the divers are even worse). There’s nothing that justifies the increased cost in my mind for what appears to be in some ways an inferior watch.

I've seen the SRPD black on a bracelet (on Pete at Chillin' Wit Watches) and it looks stunning but myself I own the sand coloured SNK which was around 70GBP bought from Singapore. I'm not precious about the timegrapher differences between the 7s26 and 4R36 the latter of which which hacks and hand winds. The Seiko shuffle is no real bother on the 7s26 and it can be reasonably hacked by applying a little back pressure on the crown when setting the time. The newer dials and quality of the cases are stunning though, even though I was surprised that there was no screw down crown on the 5KX on my recently purchased dive watch, and also a lack of sapphire isn't that smart from Seiko at that price point. So I'll be buying up the older entry level 5s whenever I see an attractive value proposition. Both Ben and Dave at Just The Watch are responsible for that. At the moment the value on the older 5s is staggering. Seiko have given and taken away but ultimately have taken away because of the price hike versus quality cock ups in areas like alignment, bracelet fitting on end links (see Shane at Relative Time), lack of sapphire crystals and so on. They are fully aware that they're giving nothing away. Great comparison Ben and it's what I needed to know. 👍

Great comparison, and a great no b.s. video as usual, Ben. I own the SNK809. Was considering the SNZG back then, but the size and price made me pick the SNK at the end. For me it's a Seiko cult classic, and love that the design is obviously a hybrid between a Type B Flieger and a field watch. A mini flieger lol? Too bad about the 30m wr, if it was at least 50m it would've been an inprovement. I usually prefer two piece straps to natos, but the original on the SNK felt too itchy to me, so I got a one piece stretch bond strap which is perfect for me. That SRPG looks great, has a nice size, way better wr and of course upgraded movement. I'm in the camp who likes the old 5 badge better than this new 5 Sports one. The old one is timeless and has history, this one feels like it will feel outdated in a near future. Still, no sapphire here and is as you mentioned about double the price as the other two here. Not great in my world. After these couple of years, I guess I'd still prefer my trusty little SNK809.

I just lost my citizen BM818 which started double ticking great watch for 10 years with perfect timekeeping no servicing and completely waterproof hundreds of hard work, swimming and snorkeling hours no problem. So I started looking again and found your Chanel not a watch guy but now I understand why I don't like the uncomfortable Seiko (gave it away) and continued looking through your reviews and settled on the Boldr V Black. Your review was spot on and 2 weeks in the watch it living up to all the good reviews. The SNK805 is still my pick. Probably not what Seiko want to hear lol! I brought mine 20 years ago now...my how that time flew (pun intended). Has held up as my daily knockabout (for the most part) in almost as good condition as the day I brought it new. That sandblasted finish really is great for wear and tear. From the 3 in the video, I can't say to me that either 2 of the newer models would have been how I would have designed an upgraded version. In a lot of ways the legibility has dropped with both and I don't like the way they have changed the face design. I would have taken the SNK805, made the 12, 3, 6 and 9 dial markers more prominent with raised lumed numerical indexes and not added to the clutter of the outer chapter ring.

Not ideal for an active person. Is it too much to ask for an SNK8xx with hacking, manual winding, and MADE IN JAPAN, not Malaysia? Just tested the power reserve on my old 7S26A, from a standing point and shaking for about 4-5 min made the watch running for 34 hour, not bad , not bad at all.

Do you honestly believe there's any doubt about whether the old 5's reached the end of their production runs some time ago? The only reason they're still for sale is because Seiko made so many of them that it will take a long time to sell them all. If you compare SMRP instead of real-world prices, then the prices of the old 5's are much more similar to those of the new ones. Also, if you compare real-world prices for the old 5's today to several years ago, the prices have doubled, as the end of the supply slowly, ever so slowly comes into view. I think the worst you can accuse Seiko of is not coming right out and publicly saying, "the prices of the old Seiko 5's have been due to us making millions too many units and causing a huge glut. Sorry, but we can't make products at those prices on a permanent basis." And it's their prerogative not to say it if they choose not to, and just to get on with business and let people say what they're going to say.

I was considering the Seiko 5 SRPG27 and the SRPG29 but I’m feeling put off by the apparently poor legibility of the polished numerals. I’ve still got my Seiko 5 SNK809, which doesn’t have that problem.

The SNK809 dial, with the hour markings on the smaller diameter inner ring and the minute markings on the larger diameter outer ring made so much sense, given that the hour hand is shorter and the minute hand is longer. So why did Seiko depart from this excellent arrangement with the SNZG15, merely because the case size was increased? Why not retain the SNK809s perfectly sensible dial layout?

Are these really applied indices? or is the dial "simply" pressed?

The new SRPG (esp srpg 35) size, crystal, patina dial and hands really phenomenal for me. Can't stop staring at it.

I have the SRPG35 as well and definitely agree. I love that watch.

My SNZG in black is still one of my favorite watches. I have it on a tire-tread rubber strap. I had a blue SNK, my first mechanical watch, but I found it too small and just never wore it. I gave it to a family member. I agree that the new iteration does look good, but I don’t think the jump in price is justified by the modest increase in specs.

I've got both the SNZG15 and SRPG37, and I'm quite happy with them. The SRPG fits the wrist better, and I've replaced that nato strap with an OEM 20mm 2-piece that matches the one on the SNZG, and added the blasted buckle from said nato.

I am wearing an SNK809 right now. It is OK but a bit of a pain The improvements needed are obvious: hand winding, crown at 3 o'clock, sapphire crystal and lume mark at the 12 o'clock position. Apart from these, nothing else should change. To cut corners the glass back could be replaced with a solid metal one Shame that Seiko has not cottoned on.

I really hate that new 5 logo and as someone with the wrists of a forest fairy I hate that they keep making the field watches bigger. The SNK models are still my choice.

This watch was everything i wanted, especially the blue and gold colorway of the SRPG39, but its just abit too big for my skinny 6 inch wrists. i wish it was the same size as the snk8xx, expecially the height

I have a couple of SNZG watches. They're comfortable and reliable, perfect for the weekend. I was disappointed at first that the movement would not hack or hand wind, but having owned a Seiko 5 since 1979, I'm well acquainted with the old Seiko Shuffle and I can live without hacking if need be. While I was happy to hear about the upgraded movement, I was immediately turned off by the price increase. Like you said, it doesn't appear to be an equivalent increase in value added to the watch. I'll pass on these and enjoy both of my SNZGs. Thanks for your review.

It is a great watch - dial and case size! There is no need to compare it to SNK805 vs SNZG09 fitted with outdated calibre. I still have my SNZG15 modded with NH36 though. But recently the hardlex crystal crashed badly inside of the watch just like a front wind of a car. The outside surface of the crystal is kinda ok, but ... I am almost sure that little glass particles could get into calibre over date&day window and I will hardly get it back to normal state.

calibre is not a big deal for everybody maybe it is for you... i find SNZG better looking by every aspect
