The dress that "Triss" wears is made of a sparkle fabric called Assuit. It is made in Egypt and is quite expensive, the white and gold metallic dress that "Yennifer" wears is the same kind of fabric.

totally agree with what you said about the fit! I loved the actress in the role of Yennefer but it really felt like the costume designer did her dirty. It felt like they were not thinking about individual actors/actresses specific shapes and proportions (in general) which resulted in making costumes that did not work for them and accentuate certain aspects of their form that would assist the personalities of the character, especially in her case! Some of her costumes seemed to make her stance shift due to the fit and alter the effect of her character presence on screen.

I think most issues I have or perhaps the issues that most people would have are related to the budget (so thus I feel its not totally fair to compare the costumes to block-bluster films, show, etc costumes). I am glad they put a focus on the monsters and monster effects with their budget, but I do lament the blow to the costumes. I feel there still could have been a better focus on silhouettes and palettes for the different areas (like you both discussed), would have strengthened the visuals so much >< and that mask was by far the worst, it was too much and too dollar shop costumey haha.

I was constantly distracted by the Nilfgaardian armor. I thought it was weirdly cool looking. But every scene with it I was more interested in how the costume people made the folds/ripples and what materials they used than whatever that character was doing.

hi hello I love you both. Totally agree with all of this. Most of my problem with the costuming is that everything felt like a Halloween Store purchase 😂🙈 Nothing felt "lived in" if that makes sense. Even Geralt's shiz needed to be thrown around in the dirt a little more before filming hahaha

Yes, I definitely agree! Especially women’s clothing looked totally unworn and not gritty at all - and considering the circumstances it should at least have a stain or two? Maybe that’s what made Renfri’s outfit stand out

Yes! You don't want a knight in shining armour because that means it's never been used, you want a knight in armour that has got some dings and scratches and dirt on it!
@Demothios
@Demothios 3 жыл бұрын
@@caitlinbrown6324 That makes more sense with clothing, than with any form of metal armor. Armor, like swords, had to be maintained and cared for or it might break when it mattered most (during battle), and for as long as militaries have existed, it was the soldiers themselves that were expected to provide the (basic) care for their own weapons and armor (not talking about smithing work,). So really, before and after fight or battle, a knight in metal armor, really *ought* to have had a well-polished armor. It would have been drilled into him, in the same way sewing garments and basic repear of clothing would have been drilled into girls in the home.

i don’t mind things not looking “historically accurate” in a fantasy show. what bothered me was the lack of cohesiveness between the clothes of each kingdom, every gown was completely random and different from one another, it was very off putting?? there needs to be a certain style , silhouette or at least a material that is preferred or cultural to each region, i think. i hope they do a better job with the new costume designer in the new season

There are actually reasons for that. And style depends on not only region and status just like with us but mages dress redicoulusly in the novels it is commneted on alot considering the type of stories they are. Also some randomness in wardrobe is from it jumping years or even decades in time, as we all know style can change over years and decades even in the same region and then each region has not only different races but species ect like you said , in fantasy you have to have allowances half the sorceresses clothes are magic anyways 😏

This stuff annoyed me so much about the show. I dont know the first thing about historical dresses, but Yennefer looked more like some Popstar then someone at a kings court. That cage dress and the coat worn for the dragon hunt - what? And the Nilfgard armour looks like the texture of animal intestines. But its not just the dresses also the sets. Compare the awful Dubai Hotel look of that Aretusa party with the great hall in the Harry Potter Movies for example - looks way more convincing.

I didn't really look at the outfits, but noticed some of Yen's were weird. However I think the winter coat is pretty similar to her coat in the last game (although simpler). The sets... I liked the slightly surreal feeling for most nature settings, but when it came to fancier buildings and the magical forest it seemed like too much. At first I wasn't even sure if the inn where Geralt meets Jaskier is a dream, a flashback or actually real.

@kshiftkometh It's ambiguous and I interpreted it as when she said the word it was just the word to end the party, but the fact that this is even up for debate is pretty disturbing, and I sincerely hope that scene wasn't intended to be Yennefer date-raping people, because if it was, then Yennefer is iredeemable in my eyes.

The thing is there's three different timelines, with Ciri's lasting like a week or two (I think), Geralt's being twenty years roughly, and then Yennefer's is 80 or 90. So you'd definitely expect clothing to change drastically over Yennefer's parts, especially since you're dealing with very wealthy characters for the vast majority of it, but there's not really anything. I can definitely forgive the comparative lack of change during Geralt's given his is a lot shorter and he's dealing a lot more with ordinary people, who probably wouldn't have changed trends as frequently.

This show looks like melted bin bag. When you are doing screen adaptation and your main problem is where to put racial minority actors (including option to put one as albino character and second as characters with hair color existing naturally only in one group of White people in one, precise nation) than you are so wet about putting them were you want that you swap their weapons (which are like main known trait of them in books?) you know you screwed it. Your main problem should be to write good story and keep things right with lore. And who you set as who should be about who fits role better. And it's actually post-writing And races don't matter as if we are equality SJWs who consider races not existing... well there shouldn't be any difference.

TBH when I was reading the Witcher all those years ago (20, I guess) I remember having a laugh with my friends that Sapkowski was describing all women's clothing as if he was writing about a costume ball from the late 80s - early 90s. And also he was writing like... well... a man whose understanding of fashion, in general, was not too sophisticated :P So in this way the show kind of nailed it :P Also, a lot of people have that expectation that it should be mostly medieval, but again, konia z rzędem to those who can tell me what period was the main inspiration to the books, because it's really a mashup, I'm pretty sure there was some WWI imaginary brought in at some point, then I could swear some stuff referenced 17th century Polish and Ruthenian sarmatia, wizards totally had 19th century vibes to them, but then there were the temple people and the druids that were like like quite ancient/early medieval, and frankly, there are some sci-fi elements as well to complete the picture. But I think we can all agree that it was costume designer's job to somehow manage this mess and give us something that makes sense. Like I agree with you they should come up with a set of themes for each country.

I remember reading a collection of his shorter works, and one of those was about writing fantasy and fantasy writers and he was suuuper wound up about the whole "historical accuracy" debate in the fantasy circles - or as he called it, the question of "does Galadriel wear panties?" Guess he just believes that fantasy clothes can be whatever the hell one wants them to be. Sadly, despite all this freedom in the source material the show's designers came up with, uh, quite subpar stuff.

@ChristopherDraws 4 жыл бұрын
I've watched the series, but struggle to remember the names (forgive me). I found Yennefer's outfits really jarring - not a fashion historian, but made me think of 1980-90s - and then I considered perhaps she is supposed to look "out of time" due to her being such a powerful witch, and also because she is so dismissive of the status quo. Similarly, I think "Witch Mom" has such a closely fitted, rigid style as a visual metaphor for her character's insistence on control - and highlights how Yennefer sees her Witch Mom as conforming to society's expectations and not challenging them. I agree with your general summary, that the historical inspirations are too varied, which makes it seem like the production hasn't really worked through its world building properly - one example, if the culture is bad at metalwork, then it makes sense for people to wear leather armour with small amounts of studs or pieces of metal plate... But then you have palace guards wearing full metal armour with ergonomic shaping, so confuses everything. Your suggestion at the beginning of the video that you anticipated a medieval/pre-medieval design is really cool, and I would have loved to see something like that. Thanks for the video, love your work (and thanks Gosia!)

I thought they were awful... Yennefer’s dress at the battle in the last episode was so cheap and tacky and bad it took me out of it every time she came onscreen

I felt so sorry for the actress. Her lines are so awkward. Her costumes are cheap and awful. When she HAD a costume. Good for her for being so comfortable wiith her body. Honestly some of those costumes were so awful I would have prefered bodypaint. But as an actress, she held it together and managed to sell the character. I really think next season will be better.

When watching I told myself to not look to closely at the costumes because it is a fantasy show. But it's still fun to see where or in which time period they took their inspiration from

Can you please rate the costumes in BBC Merlin??? I hold it so close to my heart but I am SO interested in your opinion on if they were accurate or if they weren't, where the inspirations came from!

My thoughts in order of occurrence: 1. She's so cute with bangs 2. But isn't it inconvenient for vintage hairstyles? 3. There's two of them... as expected, no bangs 4.

Just a note, leather armour is hella strong and can resist a lot. It's very flexible and would have padding and stuff under too. Idk about the design but the material was perfectly fine.

I feel like it would be more effective if it was smooth, allowing the blade to just slide off if hit. With this weird armor it would get caught in the wrinkles, wouldn't it?

Somewhere it’s mentioned that this is actually a brigandine, a jacket with small, interlocking metal plates riveted in the inside. That’s why it has the rivets seen on the outside. These were actual things and quite popular as they were cheaper than a full set of plate but still quite protective.

Leather armor isn't hella strong, it's far more easily pierced than mail and more expensive to make. Leather armor was never common historically.

I associate 1890s with witches because of the classic Wizard of Oz movie from 1939, so I don't mind this influence on some of the costumes. The comments about Yen's fashion/editorial look dresses - this reminds me of what they did with the costumes for Reign. I don't mind it for fantasy series, but for Reign, I honestly think they should have just changed all the characters' names and made it an original fantasy series with nothing to do with history.

A note about the armor: leather armor, while light weight, is preferred if your fighting tactics rely on agility. It isn't universally good, but it does have it's place.

D&D isn't real life. A big strong boy like Geralt would have no issues moving around in chain mail, brigandine, or even plate. Plus it would actually protect him unlike that biker outfit in the show.

Watching this I finally realised what bothered me so much about this show aesthetically! There is absolutely no red line running through it. Like, some of the clothes being rush-jobs or using cheaper fabrics is something I can forgive since this show probably didn't have a huuuge budget for it but FUHUUCK. At least _some_ consistency! Lowkey hate comparing this show to Game of Thrones but like yall hinted at, there is a coherence to the costumes there. You can totally see the differences in the different cultures and social standings of folk but it all comes together to form a singular world and time period. The Witcher doesn't have that and that's a fault you can't really attribute to too little budget.

I had a big problem with the contact lenses in this show, it's just that they are very fake xd you can tell they are contacts (except yennefer , I think there was CGI and it looked good)but the main character the witcher and Ciri and Ciri's mother is just , ugh.
