Matthew does not claim that Jesus ascended in Galilee. Jesus gave the Great Commission there and met the disciples. For 40 days after the resurrection, Jesus appeared to many people. He did a lot in that period. And that involved going to different places and different meetings with some of the same people. Imagine how much many of us do in 40 days! Would a contradiction or minor historical error make the Bible's overarching message untrustworthy? Not at all. At the same time, this is not an example of an error. And while Biblical literalists may misinterpret some passages, we also want to avoid the other error of simply assuming mistakes instead of considering the most likely possibility that the historical sections of Scripture are correct in the stories they recount.
