I mean this becomes immediately apparnt when you watch any kind of cinematic media of WoW, be it the movie or expansion trailers. Nagrand is a huge expanse where you can spot a tree every thousand miles, Stormwind is a colossal city with hundreds of houses and Dranosh Pass (Orgrimmar's gate) is at least twice the size of what we see in-game
@davidmartensson2738 ай бұрын
@@FrayfeatherOn the other hand, especially the early zones when you first play the game feels a lot bigger than they are, at least if you focus on the quests and such as it takes quite a while to map the full zone, in vanilla, classic and BC that is, in the later expansions they shrink very fast with more gryphons and horses earlier and also much faster leveling so that you rush through zones like they are mere bumps in the road.

The pre-Cataclysm zone felt more immersive to me, for some reason. I remember running around there one night with a buddy, leveling my first character. I've always liked to think of the name as not completely literal but something like, maybe when Tauren's were first discovering that land one of the youngers looked out at the needles and said "WOOOW There must be a thousand of them" and the elders liked it and over time it became a nickname of the land and then over more time it became the actual name of the land. Before the Sundering this zone was a deep river. I've always assumed that the zone was named for a now-extinct plant that resembles a "needle" and there are some plants in rivers that grow tall and slender. Maybe they have an ancient "cousin" that was a plant growing in this river, later Thousand Needles. The old quest "Akiris by the Bundle" could be a clue. The quest text did mention "stalks" and a stalk is the stem of a plant. They're an ocean plant, but what if in the ancient river, now Thousand Needles, a similar plant grew. Taller, tougher (to withstand the fast-flowing water) and it looked like a needle. Maybe there were thousands of them, but the Taurens who called this part of their tribal lands might have made it a game to send their younglings out to collect a thousand of these stalks. Thus a name was born and the region (while a river and later as a dry bed and even later as a flooded plane) became known as Thousand Needles... Welcome to my head cannon btw. I now live rent free in your mind. LOL ...oh the days when a Carrot on a Stick was a necessity. 🙂

WoW maps and even cities are always scaled down for gameplay and design purposes. If we were playing in the world scaled properly... Either the entire game would be taking place in 3 zones per continent (at most, probably closer to 1 or 2), or we'd basically have to give up our real lives to spend predominantly traveling. I mean, Stormwind and Elwynn are great examples of how scaled down the game is. A city with a zone where Goldshire is 2 buildings, and there are like 3-4 houses in the zone with a Lumbermill to the east. Pretty sure the Human capital is more than maybe 150-200 people at best.
