Are These Bad Hooks - Offset Circle Hooks vs. Inline Circle Hooks

What is the difference between an inline circle hook and an offset circle hook? Inline circle hooks are much safer when it come to protecting fish that you plan to release. Offset circle hooks are more likely to throat hook a fish, or hook a fish deeper in the mouth.

I have found Mustad Demon Perfect inline circle hooks to be the best. I have them from size 4 to 4/0 because they work for crappie with live minnows as well. They make a 1X fine wire hook as well so the minnows stays alive longer. I order them from Mustard online because the local stores don't stock them. They seem to run a bit small, so you may have to use a size up.

Gut or throat hooking fish of illegal or undesirable size is why I switched to in-line circles, been using them for three years and haven't deep hooked a fish yet, plenty of creel limits though.

I'd forgotten about inline vs offset. I find I gut hook far more often if the line has any slack in it, like with a Carolina or Santee Cooper rig, but I never do with my modified dropper loop rig. Now I'm going to have to check and see what hooks I've been using, I tend to just grab whatever is cheapest.

Is it worth mentioning that slack in the line gives the fish the ability to swallow a hook? When you drift or drag there is no slack so little chance of a gut/gill hook? Additionally when double anchored or bank fishing reel down and eliminate slack to the point there is tension on the rod so when hooking up same result happens

I can see gut hook ing on a lake or river with very little current. I fish the Mississippi and have never gut hooked one with a tight line

Imo offset one will help in case the mouth is way bigger than the hook, this will create the same dynamic as jhook (hook up not at the edge of fish mouth). One problem with circle is when the hook size is too small, it will go out of mouth easily, while on jhook, the smaller it is, the higher chance it will hook at gut of the fish

I end up hooking Bowfin super deep 99% of the time with tournament approvoved Owner Hooks. Mostly buried in the tongue or throat. I was using the offset version with the same results so I switched over to the tournament straight style hooks and the exact same throat and tongue hook up outcome. I’m guessing I’m using to small of hooks and the wrong knot? I was using the Clinch knot. I’m switching over to an egg loop “snell style”. I’m also going to switch from size 6 and size 2 and will vary from 2/0 to 5/0 and see what works best.

I'm not gut hooking them it seems I'm whisker hooking them instead. I just got some gamakatsu octopus circle hooks but I have tried them yet. Could it be the offset hook and have you had any issues with this. Thank sir.

From what I can tell he usually uses inline circle hooks the problem is if you're a multi species fisherman like me and you prefer a bent eyelet hook your size options in terms of hook sizes are very limited. For example I need hook sizes from size 8 all the way up to size 8/0 but I can't find a bent eyelet inline circle hook that comes in all those sizes I can only find offset ones in those sizes. So it comes down to what you're fishing for if you're fishing for catfish that require big hooks you're not going to have a problem there. If you're fishing for smaller fish too that's when you'll run into a problem finding an inline circle hook with a bent eyelet.

Offset circle hooks are illegal to use here. Good luck finding them in stores. They use. Them in long lines for halibut in the ocean too. I heard about them about ten years before I ever read about them in the in fishermen magazine.

My son has taken over my youtube channel, but will you please take the time to comment back I just have a question. I have been targeting large trophy catfish off the bank around some bridge rip rap and sunken trees. I have been catching flatheads consistently in this location with my biggest one only being 16 pounds. I have been using various size circle hooks eagle claw 7/0 and 9/0 circle sea hooks. I have good rod holders i jam pipes in the holes of the rocks so that they can't move. I am letting the fish load up on the rod completely, I reel down and then remove the rod from the and everytime within a few seconds I can feel the hook just pop out. I am using live bream and I hook them above the anal fin due to the amount of structure to ensure he goes straight to the bottom. Some of these fish have been quality fish because i can feel them for a few seconds before they pop off. I am extremely frustrated and do not know what to do. I missed 4 solid takedowns tonight and again I let them completely load up on the rod I know for sure I am not rushing the hookset I watched one pull drag for 5 or so seconds tonight before I reeled down and picked up the rod and same thing again. I just don't understand and any advice you have would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Get some 7/0 Kahle Eagle Claw hooks! I fish a lot ( only thing I’m good at ). Keep going back to Kahle hooks. Big flatheads will break them on limb lines though.
