We fish for red snapper out of Louisiana a lot. Been using the owner reef and rig circles. They’re legal in every gulf state and meet the requirements for reef species.

I always wondered why the eye end of the hook was angled back (snell). I wasn’t sure if it was for bait presentation, maybe it didn’t spin or move around as much when your reeling in. Now I know. Thanks

So, the bend in the eye is what makes it an "octopus" hook? Please tell me if I'm wrong. I just recently found out you shouldn't snell a hook with no bend in the eye, because the way it gets pulled takes it out of the dishes mouth.

That is my understanding. With that being said, i have seen a package of hooks that didn't have the snell bend but was called octopus... I reached out to #gamakatsu on this but it wasn't perfectly clear if this was a package mistake.

I ve had fish gut hooked while using a circle hook.

no hook is perfect, but statistically the circle hooks has significantly fewer gut hooks.

The first 4/0 hook package that you recommend, do you (or anyone) know why Owner doesn’t place anything on the package, including displaying the hooks within the package, that says “circle” or “inline”? In other words, unlike the other two packs of hooks, there is nothing to tell the user what the hooks are, except maybe “5174RR-141,” which means nothing to me.

I guess the only thing i can say is that it says REEF & RIG which to me says it is legal for reef fishing (must be inline circle hook). However, I happen to know the regulations before buying the hooks so I was able to make that correlation. I agree with you though, a digram like the Mutu Light would have been nice, or just some clearer description would have been nice.
