Mine gave me a scare also. I thought they were all dead because of the amount of bees outside the hive. But Friday was 60* and they were flying today we got 8 inches of snow in NEPA also. And they're tucked away.

Tips for beekeeping next year! 1. Do not put up with aggressive hives 2. Do monthly mite checks 3. Do not harvest honey off frames that have brood, that is the bees food. 4.Harvest in August so the hives can start prepping for winter and you can get treatments on if needed 5.REMOVE Flow Supers and Queen excluders from hives and store in a place safe from rodents! 6. Remove inner cover and replace with ReflectX and pink board insulation, place roof/lid on top. 7. Strong healthy colony will be just fine cracking the lid for a check-up on a sub 40 Fahrenheit, just don’t go digging in the brood nest. 8. The hive is dead even if they come out of the catatonic state. The sperm and the queen will be damaged and they will be unable to raise brood because they did not maintain hive temperature. Any Bees you saw flying out of it were robbers from your other Hives stealing resources. 9. Please get involved in your local Bee club, having people to share ideas and ask questions of is invaluable. I’ve learned a lot from your channel and it even caused me to get some backyard chickens. Please listen To Hive Jive, Two Bees podcast and BKcorner. The tips and knowledge they will impart is invaluable. And if you have time to read “keeping bees with a smile”

Guys, you should never open your hive when the temp is below 60°f. Also, never pull frames in the winter. You take a chance on damaging the queen and you won’t be able to replace her till mid April. I hope these guys will be ok….. 🥺

Inexperience showing here. I am no beekeeper but I watch a LOT of bee videos and it seems pretty basic to me that they need to keep their core temperature to stay alive in the winter sooooo even if you've had a warm day ...or several warm days...that the lid should stay closed on ANY cold day

I have opened my hives how many times sub 36° F to replace empty honey frames with freezer frames that have been warmed in the house many times. Leaving the Flow frames on was a bigger death sentence then if he had taken it off in the middle of January in the middle of a blizzard for a strong healthy hive. Of which none of his hives were strong going into fall except for the one that wanted to murder him.

Why’d you open it? The bees have a way of insulating, and introduced lots of frigid air into it. Next, are you going to paint the hive white later? Aren’t you worried the dark brown will collect too much solar heat?

don't worry your bees are ok, when its cold they go dormant but once the temp warms up they will start moving and working the hive and collecting pollen again for the hive, bees are amazing creatures the cold wont kill them except maybe a few so don't believe the people that say they are dead and need to be replaced, if that was true the cold kills the hive where i live in Minnesota we wouldn't have bees here because we have very long and bitter cold winters here and if it was true no bees would ever be able to survive here to get to spring again.

I had a hive that got killed during the last bad frost strikes.. they thought it was safe to break formation and it caught them unexpectedly. I was very sad, but now im a 2nd year beekeeper and I have more experience under my belt. Helpful tip: make sure your mouse guards are still accessible to several bees, and make sure they can still clean the trash. Another tip: do NOT use ANY feeders that is liquid of ANY type in the hives, it will cause moisture and therefore death. (We used foundant) To ensure your bees warmth, you can wrap insulation around the hive, and if bees are in a really windy area you can use hay Bale's to block the wind.

We got 6 inches today. I agree with Becky... go away Snow!! lol. I am so ready for spring!!! I still think you have a snapping Turtle in your pond. They dig out holes to hide in the pond's mud so they can catch fish and could've done that damage to your ducks face last year. I started raising Alligator Snappers back in the 90's. They can do quite the damage and can even take your fingers off.

I think I can help with the seeds, if you moisten the soil and then loosely cover with some cling wrap it. That is really not ok 😭 I know standards in America are much lower than here in Europe but I’m sure those cages don’t even meet the minimum there. Please, get them off of a cage mesh bottom and let them have a bigger space to run around. Even the design you’ve made for the chicken tractors would work wonders!! Things went from near 80 to near 30 here in South Louisiana too, I ended up taking my potted plants back inside. Even though temps get really cold still, I like to start my seedlings inside by planting my seeds on Groundhog day, Feb 2nd. They stay in pots with plastic pans under to keep the dirt contained, and a reptile hanging light that emits UV light. They start coming up after a week, and by the time it's warm enough to move them outside, they're big enough to withstand a sudden cold snap down to the lower 40s.

Because the cluster what they keep warm and the other parts of the hive is that cold they get paralised. Best wishes . Hope they fine in.the lower box.

I wonder if the bees huddle together to stay warm.

Yes, they huddle in a cluster around the queen in an area with food and vibrate their wings. That looked like a dead cluster, unfortunately

The weather has been crazy here as well. I shrugged when you fell down when trying to get that 2nd duck egg in your pond. The water was down right cold!! Beautiful greenhouse, y'all put alot of work in to it. The flow bee hive, how do you like it? Should someone interested in starting bees start with a flow hive, or stick with the traditional hive in your opinion.
