Great low maintenance option for a slope. I love the contrast with other leafy evergreens & perennials

They're also the longest lasting in cut arrangements with interesting forms. They keep their color off the plant for months in wet floral foam. Thanks Jim!

Good choice! Cryptomeria japonica is one of my favorite conifers. In our woodland garden they tolerate partial shade and resist the deer herd.

Being in zone 6A and growing several cultivars of Cryptomeria, I've found the tighter the foliage the more cold hardy they appear to be!

Oh the cryptomeria is amazing! So gorgeous with the frost on it. There’s one cryptomeria that I love which has white tips but I’ve forgotten the name. They really are amazing plants.

Suggestion: a similar video with Juniperus Virginiana. Like cryptomeria, they seem to come in a huge variety of sizes, shapes and colors. I’d love to hear your picks for the top performing varieties.
@alanerpington569810 ай бұрын
What I think is funny is how if it's not a named cultivar, they call it a cedar (ie Western Red Cedar), but if it's a named variety, they call it a juniper like Taylor juniper or Brodie juniper.

I love the cedar trees in Japan, the big downside being the pollen from trees on the ridge lines of Yamanashi and Shizouka Prefectures that gets blown down to Tokyo in spring. Those trees keep the hay-fever medicine industry very profitable.

A big drawback for cedars and false cedars 😫 definitely something to consider for those with allergies!!

Cryptomeria are excellent plants, there are so many varieties now. I use the big trees, and I have a couple of small varieties, but Love the big trees as they make a great contrast to traditional evergreens.

I'm totally geeking out-- Every cryptomeria you are pointing out in JCRA, I took notice of them when we visited last week! So cool!

Thanks for all the great information, Jim! I've been slowly adding evergreens to my yard for winter interest and am in the same zone - also NC, just a few hours west. Your videos are very helpful!

Such beautiful trees. In central FL we have a tree called African fern trees (afrocarpus gracillior). They aren’t that common but I wish they were because their foliage is so cloud-like and inviting.

Chapel View by First Editions is another awesome one that gets to be a large shrub type from 5 -10’ x 4-8’. Positively gorgeous! I have 3 in 6b/7a Oklahoma. Thanks for featuring these Jim!

The bark is definitely similar to a lot of the other things we call cedars

Love our Yoshino Cryptomerias. They started off slowly but now on their 4th yr they are really putting on growth. What I don't like is the bronzing in our zone 7 East TN
@dia949110 ай бұрын
I’m in SE TN 7b and I’ve been thinking about cryptomeria in my flower beds. Do you think the bronzing is too much? Not sure if you’re in SE TN or not.

@@dia9491 last year it was significant because of the cold event Jim mentioned. This year there's not been much of it at all. It's mostly been in the interior and not as visible on the outer limbs. They are gorgeous trees with alot of movement! Mine are 4 years old and they are really starting to put on growth. When we planted them they were maybe 4 feet tall and now they are well over the top of a 10' fence.
@alanerpington569810 ай бұрын
Radicans cryptomerias grow to about the same height, except a little narrower, and they don't bronze as much as yoshinos.

Now you've got me thinking about planting various conifers in my partially back wooded area, especially those that may not need a lot of moisture! 🤔 I've already got some taller cedar trees in that wooded area.

Jim if the conifer starts balding at the base or, at the back (the part facing the house), is there anything we can do to stimulate new growth in those bald areas? I just hate seeing lovely conifers and then you walk around and the whole back side is bald!

I wish you would discuss how to plant them.

Like any other conifer actually. I have 4 of these and didn't do anything special. If you search his channel he has alot of videos on how to plant trees

I really loved all of them but you only gave the names and not growing zones. I’m in zone 9b California and would love a few of these.
@alanerpington569810 ай бұрын
I think 9b is about the limit for most of these. They'll grow, but you'll want to consider your placement carefully and make sure they're watered OK, especially in the first few years. Morning sun/afternoon shade would be ideal.

My "Dragon Prince" is 6 years old and has behaved beautifully in a front corner of my terraced garden. However, I am beginning to worry that it will get TOO successful and get too big. I can't imagine pruning it. Should I just leave it be and work around it?
@kristopherfante964610 ай бұрын
I just planted three of these last fall. How big are yours after 6 years?
@frandavis868710 ай бұрын
I just went out to measure it: 3'tall and 4.5' wide. It is such a beauty. It wasn't even a foot tall when I planted it.
@kristopherfante964610 ай бұрын
@@frandavis8687 ok, thanks for measuring! I figured they would not stay as small as the tag said lol. They will probably be 6’ tall over 20 years.

I love cryptomerias. But my sekkan sugi is getting lots of brown tips and its only been in the ground about a year. Anybody have any thoughts about causes/solutions?
@alanerpington569810 ай бұрын
Some with the sekkans I planted last year. Hope they outgrow it!
@alanerpington569810 ай бұрын
Deer just damaged the sekkan cryptomerias I planted last year. 😣 They're young and haven't filled in enough for the trunk to be obscured yet (not nice & full like the ones in the video), and they took some antler rubbing damage. I think if they were just a little more mature, the deer would've left them alone.
