I really appreciate the no-fuss plants you point out. By now, near the end of a long hot summer, I've gotten weary of all the beautiful things I planted that needed to be babied all summer. Rethinking the yard.

About 5 inches east of you on the coast. The native Turk’s cap, _Malvaviscus drummondii_ is the flashy garden diva here in my pollinator garden. Bright red flowers glow against the healthy green leaves. There’s always a hummingbird or two poking the flowers. And ‘Phyllis Fancy’ salvia hums with the song of a hundred bees. She’s a smoky blue, large lady. The plain green pineapple sage opened a few flowers last week. The chartreuse cultivar? Soon.

Thanks for a show full of good-looking plants that should survive in Zone 9b. Our winters are milder than yours, but our suers are so hot and dry that many plants that thrive in your area don't make it here even with regular water. The other big difference is that our water, and thus our soil, is fairly alkaline so southern staples, like azalea just don't perform well here.

Yes, in the central valley where summer temps can top 115 for several days in a row The only saving grace here is that it always cools off dramatically at night, so it takes a while to reach those nasty hig@@heathermcelroy7171

My yucca gloriousa varigatta is all budded up and will bloom any day. The anticipation is unreal. Cooler weather has also launched a burst of blooms on all my abelias, and blue salvia still looks great.

My hyacinth bean vines were looking beautiful. Then this morning I noticed the leaves were all wilted. Apparently a bunny chomped them all just inches from the ground. 🙄

In my garden, the perennial sunflower or Helianthus are just a sunshine bush about now, all the Asters & Solidago. Dendrathema or hardy mums just about to pop.

If I were not in 6b the Illicium ‘Florida Sunshine’ would be a real contender for my garden due to that amazing color and deer resistance. But I try to draw the line at 5b.

Hi Jim. Lovely video! I'm in Georgia. What plants can be planted around the house not only for their beauty, but also to repel bugs? Primarily water bugs. Roaches for those reading this and are not from the southeast.

Encourage birds, they'll help with bugs. Actually, our native Georgia Dekays snakes are small snakes that eat slugs & bugs. I leave small hides for them.

Jim, there is a crested variety of the Cryptomeria Black Dragon, (which I want badly). Do you know of other trees that exhibit this oddity? There are a number of trees that are on the list of having contorted growth habits such as the Harry Lauder Walking Stick, but I haven't found any other tree or bush with the crested growth. There are a number of cacti that present trait but trees seem to be rare.
